CONSTRUCTION OVERVIEW

This poncho is made by seaming one long side of two crocheted rectangles together (via
whipstitch) -- leaving an opening for the head / neck.

Each rectangle consists of 80 rows (76 sts in each row).

The stitches for this pattern are double crochet (worked in various combinations of back
loops and both loops) and ch-2 spaces.

GAUGE

10 dc and 8 dc rows = 4”

I am a tight crocheter. If you know you are a loose crocheter, you may want to begin your
gauge swatch making process with a smaller hook.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS & SIZE ADJUSTMENTS

Each rectangle measures 24” (poncho length) x 44” (poncho width).

Neck: 11” across (this can be made smaller or larger when the two rectangles are stitched
together)

Length: Neck to wrists: 16.5”; neck to bottom of short front / back: 24”; neck to bottom of
long-hanging “points”: approx. 32”

The model wearing this poncho is 5’8”.

Adjusting length: Simply add or subtract stitches to / from your base chain. Be sure to
remember how many stitches you added or subtracted  as this will be referenced later in
Row 2.

Adjusting width: Simply add or subtract rows.

INSTRUCTIONS

Poncho Rectangle (Make Two):

With size N/10 mm crochet hook:

Base Chain: Ch 78,

With size M/13/9.00 mm crochet hook:

Row 1: 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook,

1 dc in next ch,

(Ch 2, skip next 2 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch) 7 times (7 ch-2 spaces made),

Rows 4 – 79: Repeat Rows 2 & 3 (see photo above, on previous page);

Row 80: Repeat Row 2;

Next: Ch 1, FASTEN OFF.

Assembly:

Position one rectangle on a flat surface, with its BEGINNING TAIL in the TOP LEFT corner,

Position second rectangle on top of first, with its BEGINNING TAIL in the TOP RIGHT corner,

Count 31 rows in from each top corner on both rectangles. Mark each 31st row with a stitch
marker.

The stitches in between your stitch markers indicate where the neck opening begins and
ends. Keeping this in mind, use whip stitch (with ONE strand of yarn) to attach the two
rectangles together with two seams – one along each side of the neck.

Optional Tassels:

Make four:

Wrap yarn around a 6” x 4” piece of cardboard 30 times (see photos on next page),

FASTEN OFF,

On one side of your cardboard, wrap a piece of yarn around the center of your wrapped yarn
and tie together tightly with 1 knot,

Wrap the same piece of yarn around again, and tie together tightly with 3 knots,

On the other side of your cardboard, cut yarn in half at the middle:

Gather all yarn ends together,

Wrap a piece of yarn 1” from the top (where your yarn is already tied together) and tie
together with 1 knot,

Wrap yarn around again, and tie together with 3 knots,

Trim ends of yarn at the bottom of your tassel until even.

Attaching Tassels to poncho:

Using your yarn needle, thread each end (separately) of a tassel’s “top tie” into the tip of one
of your poncho’s four bottom corners. Tie the two ends of your top tie together with one knot.
Use a couple of whip stitches to further secure each end. Then, to hide ends, thread them
down through the “head” of your tassel and into the center of its “body”.

FINISHING

Weave in all remaining ends.
