As a student studying far from home, in a journey full of adversity, as part of the community that has
been oppressed for so many years, I often reflect on those who had the same experiences as mine. I
often find myself reflecting on the sacrifices and struggles of those who fought for freedom and
equality long before my time. One figure who stands out in history is Dr. José Protacio Rizal, a national
hero of our country. His life and legacy are not only inspiring but are also reminders of the importance
of standing firm for what is right and just, even in the face of adversity.
Rizal's life was a courageous journey—one marked by his unwavering commitment to Philippine
independence. Though born into a privileged family, Rizal's heart was with the Filipino people who
were oppressed under Spanish colonial rule. His education and travels abroad exposed him to the
wider world, helping him see the injustices and inequalities not only in the Philippines but across the
globe. Yet, rather than simply observing, Rizal chose to act. He used his intellect, writing skills, and
passion for justice to advocate for reform in a society that was deeply divided and exploited. In his
writings, particularly in his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, he vividly painted the picture
of a nation suffering under the weight of colonialism and corruption. Rizal’s ability to use his pen as a
weapon of resistance demonstrated that true courage does not always lie in physical battles, but
also in the strength of words that challenge a higher status.
What strikes me most about Rizal's life is his deep sense of commitment to the independence of the
Philippines. Despite his many opportunities to settle down in comfortable circumstances abroad, he
chose to return to a land where he knew his life could be in danger. His actions show that his love for
the country surpassed personal safety or gain. He was not a man driven by the desire for fame or
fortune; instead, his motivations stemmed from a pure and unwavering desire to see his fellow
Filipinos free from oppression and able to live with dignity. Rizal’s return to the Philippines was not just
a personal choice, but a symbol of his unflinching belief that freedom for the Filipino people was
worth the ultimate sacrifice.
Rizal’s respect for human rights and his reformist ideals are also central to understanding his vision for
the Philippines. He did not advocate for violence or revolution as many might expect from a hero of
independence. Instead, he believed in peaceful reforms, in elevating the moral and intellectual
standards of his fellow Filipinos, and in empowering them through education. Rizal's respect for
human dignity is evident in his commitment to social justice, and he understood that true change
could only come when individuals, not just the state, were transformed. His reformist views resonate
with me today because they call for progress through unity, education, and respect for the rights of
all individuals—values that are still incredibly relevant in today's world.
As a student, far from the place I call home, Rizal's life serves as a beacon of strength, courage, and
resolve. It reminds me that no matter how far we may be from our roots, we carry with us the legacy
of those who fought for justice and the ideals of freedom and equality. His life is a testament to the
power of knowledge and peaceful resistance in the face of tyranny. Though he may have been
martyred at a young age, his influence and his message continue to echo through the generations.
In conclusion, José Rizal's courageous journey, his commitment to Philippine independence, and his
respect for human rights as a reformist have left an indelible mark on the history of the Philippines and
the world. His life inspires me to continue the fight for what is right, not through violence, but through
understanding, education, and a deep respect for the dignity of every human being. Even though I
am far from home, Rizal’s ideals remind me that true change starts within each of us, and it is our
responsibility to carry his legacy forward.
