Introduction
Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting human development
goals while sustaining the ability of natural systems to continue to provide the natural
resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend.

“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”
Need for Sustainable Development
The growing population, urbanization, and industrialization have led to environmental
degradation, making it essential to adopt sustainable practices.
Pillars of Sustainable Development
The three pillars are Economic, Social, and Environmental sustainability. All three are
essential for a balanced future.
UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In 2015, the United Nations set 17 SDGs to be achieved by 2030, focusing on issues like
poverty, inequality, and climate action.
India's Initiatives
India has launched several initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, National Solar
Mission, and Jal Shakti Abhiyan to support sustainable development.
Role of Youth & Students
Youth play a key role in promoting sustainability through awareness campaigns, eco-
clubs, and adopting eco-friendly habits.
Challenges to Sustainable Development
Challenges include overconsumption, lack of awareness, political resistance, and
economic inequalities.
Solutions and Way Forward
Solutions include the use of renewable energy, sustainable farming, proper waste
management, and environmental education.
Conclusion
Sustainable development is the only way forward to ensure a healthy planet and a secure
future for all.
