ENVIORNMENT
CHAPTER 1.
1. Ecology – Basic Understanding
Origin of Word
• Oikos = Home/place to live
• Logos = Study Ecology = Study of nature's home
Definition of Ecology
“Ecology is the scientific study of the relationship between living organisms (plants, animals,
microbes) and their environment.”
Key Focus Areas of Ecology
• Kaise organisms apne environment se interact karte hain
• Energy flow (e.g., sunlight → plant → herbivore → carnivore)
• Mineral cycle (e.g., nitrogen, carbon cycle)
• Kaise environment organism ko shape karta hai
2. History of Ecology (Indian Context Focus)
Ancient Roots
• Ecology ki shuruaat Natural History se hui – jitni purani human civilization hai
• Pracheen samay mein, aadmi ko apne aaspaas ke environment ka acchi tarah se gyaan hona
chahiye tha for survival
Ancient Indian Knowledge
• Vedas, Samhitas, Brahmanas, Aranyakas, Upanishads – sabme ecological references milte
hain
• Log plants & animals ki ecology achhi tarah jaante the
• Charaka Samhita:
◦ Air, land, water, and seasons = life ke liye essential
◦ Polluted water & air = harmful to health
Summary: Ancient Indians had deep ecological knowledge much before modern science.
3. Environment and its Components
Definition
“Environment = Sab kuch jo kisi organism ko jeevan bhar affect karta hai.”
• Living + Non-living components + Events + Influences = Complete environment
Organism’s Dependency
Sabhi organisms (virus se lekar insaan tak) environment par dependent hote hain:
• Food, water, energy, oxygen, shelter, etc.
4. Components of Environment
Abiotic (Non-living) Factors
• Energy, Light, Temperature
• Water, Air, Wind
• Fire, Gravity, Soil, Topography
Biotic (Living) Factors
• Green plants (autotrophs)
• Non-green plants (e.g., fungi)
• Animals (including human)
• Decomposers (e.g., bacteria, fungi)
• Parasites & Symbionts
5. Example: Fish in Pond
External Environment of Fish
• Abiotic: Water, temperature, oxygen, light
• Biotic: Algae, plankton, aquatic plants, animals, bacteria
Internal Environment
• Fish ke andar ka system relatively stable hota hai
• But illness, injury, stress → internal disturbance
• Example: Marine fish ko freshwater mein daal diya to survive nahi karega (due to osmotic
imbalance)
6. Ecological Organisation Levels
There are 6 levels – smallest to largest.
1. Individual (Organism)
• Ek single living being
• Can be plant, animal, microbe
• Apne aap jeevan ke processes karta haiExample: Ek neem ka ped, ek cow, ek human
2. Population
• Same species ke organisms ka groupExample: Gir forest mein Asiatic lions ka group
• Population dynamics:
◦ Increase = Birth + Immigration
◦ Decrease = Death + Emigration
• Limiting factors:
◦ Abiotic: food shortage, pollution
◦ Biotic: predation, disease
3. Community
• Different populations jo ek area mein ek saath rehte hainExample: Ek jungle mein tigers, deer,
birds, trees, sab milkar ek community banate hain
(Remaining levels will come in full topic, e.g., Ecosystem, Biome, Biosphere)
Community and Ecosystem (Hinglish Notes for UPSC)
1. Community – Meaning & Explanation
Definition:
• Jab hum nature me dekhte hain, toh plants aur animals aksar akelay nahi milte. Wo ek dusre
ke saath interdependent hote hain.
• Inka group jo actively interact karta hai, usko community kehte hain.
Example:
• Grassland Community – Yahaan grasses dominant hoti hain, lekin uske saath herbs, shrubs,
trees, aur animals bhi hote hain.
Key Features:
• Community ka naam aksar dominant species ke naam par hota hai.
• Har community rigid nahi hoti – ye small ya large ho sakti hai.
2. Types of Communities
(a) Major Communities:
• Large-sized, well-organized aur relatively independent hoti hain.
• Ye sirf sunlight par dependent hoti hain, dusre communities ke input-output pe nahi.
Example: North-East India ka Tropical Evergreen Forest.
(b) Minor Communities:
• Ye depend karti hain neighbouring communities pe.
• Inhe societies bhi kehte hain.
• Ye secondary aggregations hoti hain – complete independence nahi hoti energy ya nutrient
cycles me.
Example: Ek lichen ka mat (patch) cow dung pad pe.
3. Structure of a Community
Key Elements:
• Number of species, population size, aur interactions define karte hain community structure
ko.
• Ye structure decide karta hai:
◦ Kaun kis role me hai,
◦ Kaunse area me rehta hai,
◦ Kitni species diversity hai,
◦ Kis tarah ke interactions hain.
Example: Forest me tiger, deer, trees sab ek structure ke part hain.
4. Ecosystem – Definition & Explanation
Definition:
• Ecosystem ek structural aur functional unit hai jisme living beings (community) aur physical
environmentinteract karte hain.
• Ye materials aur energy exchange karte hain.
Includes:
• Plants, animals, microbes, soil, water, air, even humans.
Key Points:
• Har ecosystem interconnected hota hai – agar ek part kharab hua toh sab pe asar padta hai.
• Ecosystem balance me tab hota hai jab sab reproduce kar sake aur sustainable ho.
Example (India-specific): Sundarbans mangrove ecosystem – jahan trees, tigers, crocodiles,
aur humans interdependent hain.
5. Components of Ecosystem
A. Abiotic Components (Non-living)
1. Energy – Suraj se aati hai, plants direct use karte hain, animals indirectly.
• Example: India me solar radiation farming productivity ko affect karta hai.
2. Rainfall – Water sabko chahiye. Zyada rainfall areas (e.g. Meghalaya) me biodiversity zyada
hoti hai.
3. Temperature – Organisms ek range ke temperature me hi survive kar sakte hain.
• Example: Ladakh me sirf kuch hi prajatiyaan survive kar paati hain due to low temp.
4. Atmosphere – Earth ka atmosphere biosphere ke liye zaroori conditions banata hai.
5. Substratum (Soil + Surface) – Soil microbes, fungi, insects, aur plant roots ka base hota hai.
• Example: Black soil me cotton grow hota hai – Gujarat, Maharashtra me.
6. Materials:
• Organic: Proteins, carbohydrates.
• Inorganic: CO₂, NO₃⁻, PO₄³⁻, water, minerals.
7. Latitude & Altitude:
• Latitude decides climate: Tropical (Kerala), Temperate (HP), Polar (Ladakh).
• Altitude se temperature aur biodiversity change hoti hai.
B. Biotic Components (Living)
(a) Producers – Autotrophs
• Khud ka food banate hain via photosynthesis.
• Terrestrial ecosystems: Woody & herbaceous plants.
• Aquatic: Algae, phytoplankton.
Example: Paddy field ecosystem me paddy plant = producer.
(b) Consumers – Heterotrophs
Do type ke hote hain:
(i) Macro Consumers – Phagotrophs
• Jo doosre plants/animals ko khate hain.
Types:
• Primary consumers – Herbivores (e.g. cow, goat).
• Secondary consumers – Feed on herbivores (e.g. jackal, wolves).
• Tertiary consumers – Feed on secondary consumers (e.g. lion).
• Omnivores – Plants + animals (e.g. human, bear).
(ii) Micro Consumers – Decomposers/Saprotrophs
• Ye dead organic matter ko decompose karke nutrients release karte hain.
• Fungi, bacteria – important decomposers.
• Detritivores jaise earthworms, nematodes help in breaking down organic material.
Example: Cow dung me decomposers ka role in soil fertility improvement.
Ecosystem: Basic Understanding
Ecosystem ek aisi natural unit hoti hai jahan living organisms (jaise plants, animals, microbes) aur
non-living components (jaise water, air, soil) ek dusre ke saath interact karte hain. Example: Ek
forest ecosystem mein ped-paudhe, janwar, mitti, hawa sab ek dusre par depend karte hain.
2. Classification of Ecosystems
Ecosystems do major categories mein divide kiye jaate hain:
(A) Terrestrial Ecosystems (Zameen wale)
Yeh land-based ecosystems hote hain:
• Forests – Dense vegetation area (e.g. Western Ghats in India)
• Grasslands – Open lands with grasses (e.g. Banni Grasslands in Gujarat)
• Deserts – Dry regions with low rainfall (e.g. Thar Desert in Rajasthan)
(B) Aquatic Ecosystems (Pani wale)
Yeh water-based ecosystems hote hain:
• Freshwater Ecosystems – Rivers, lakes, ponds (e.g. Ganga River, Dal Lake)
• Saline Water Ecosystems – Oceans, seas (e.g. Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal)
• Marine Ecosystems – Coral reefs, mangroves (e.g. Sunderbans mangroves in West
Bengal)
3. Homeostasis in Ecosystems
Ecosystems apne aapko balance mein rakhne ki capacity rakhte hain. Is ability ko
Homeostasis kehte hain. Jaise: Agar kisi forest mein herbivore (jaise deer) ki population badh
jaaye, to carnivores (jaise tiger) ki sankhya bhi naturally badhti hai to maintain balance.
4. Ecological Footprint (पया$वरण(य पद*च,)
Definition:
Yeh ek measure hai jo batata hai ki koi population ya country kitne natural resources (land, sea,
forest etc.) ka use kar rahi hai aur kitna waste generate kar rahi hai.
• Isme bataya jaata hai ki kitni productive land & sea area chahiye human demand ko pura
karne ke liye aur us waste ko absorb karne ke liye.
Current Status (Global):
Humanity ka total ecological footprint ≈ 1.5 Planet Earths Matlab: Hum jitna use kar rahe
hain, usse 1.5 guna zyada resources chahiye Earth ko renew karne ke liye.
5. Carbon Footprint (काब$न पद*च,)
Definition:
Kisi bhi activity, person ya organization dwara kitna carbon dioxide (CO₂) release ho raha hai, use
carbon footprint kehte hain.
Link with Ecological Footprint:
• Carbon footprint ecological footprint ka 54% hissa hai.
• Fossil fuel burning (jaise petrol, diesel, coal use) se CO₂ emission hoti hai.
• Yeh batata hai ki kitni land & sea chahiye CO₂ ko absorb karne ke liye.
Growth:
• 1961 se leke ab tak carbon footprint 11x badh chuka hai.
6. Earth Overshoot & Global Comparison
Earth Overshoot Report:
• Ye report Global Footprint Network (GFN) publish karta hai.
• Yeh report batati hai ki kab humanity apna natural resource budget khatam kar deti hai har
saal.
Country-wise Comparison:
Country Type Ecological Footprint Earths Needed
Developed Countries 4 to 8 ~5 Earths
India 0.8 1 Earth
India ka lifestyle sustainable hai – hum jitna use karte hain, utna Earth de sakta hai.
Developed countries ka lifestyle unsustainable hai – unko 5 Earths chahiye.
7. Ecosystem Services (Ecosystem ke faayde)
Provisioning Services (Jeene ke resources):
• Food, fuel (jaise lakdi, biomass), fibre (cotton, jute)
• Building material (bamboo, timber)
Regulating Services (Balance banaye rakhna):
• Air & water purification
• Climate moderation
• Control of floods, droughts, wind
• Nutrient cycling and soil fertility
• Pollination of crops (like honeybees)
• Control of pests and diseases
Supporting & Cultural Services:
• Maintenance of genetic resources (crops, medicinal plants)
• Cultural, recreational, and aesthetic values (e.g. sacred groves, eco-tourism)
1. Ecotone (सं2मण 4े 6)
Definition:
Ecotone ek transition zone hoti hai do ya zyada alag ecosystems ke beech. Isme dono
ecosystems ke features milte hain.
Examples:
• Mangrove forest – Terrestrial aur Marine ecosystem ke beech ka ecotone (India mein
Sundarbans is best example).
• Grassland – Between forest and desert.
• Estuary – Jahan river samundar se milti hai (e.g. Godavari estuary in Andhra Pradesh).
• River bank – Jahan land aur freshwater system milte hain.
Characteristics of Ecotone:
867. Width – Narrow bhi ho sakti hai aur wide bhi.
868. Intermediate Conditions – Beech ka area hone ki wajah se dono ecosystems ka tension
zone hota hai.
869. Species Change – Ek ecosystem ke species gradually kam hote hain aur doosre ke badhte
hain.
870. Unique Species – Kuch species sirf ecotone mein milte hain (called edge species).
871. Greater Biodiversity – Yahaan species ki zyada variety aur population hoti hai. (This is
called Edge Effect).
Example: Forest aur desert ke beech wale ecotone mein birds ki density bahut zyada hoti hai.
2. Edge Effect
Jab do ecosystems ke beech wale ecotone mein species ka diversity aur density zyada ho jaata
hai, usse edge effectkehte hain.
• Edge species: Wo species jo sirf ya zyada tar ecotone mein milti hain.
• Birds mein edge effect zyada dekha jaata hai.
3. Niche (7नच – एक ज(व क: भ<=मका)
Definition:
Niche ka matlab hai kisi organism ka unique functional role ecosystem mein – uska kaam, khana,
reproduction, aur survival ke liye jaruri conditions.
Har species ka niche alag hota hai, koi do species exact same niche share nahi kar sakti.
Niche ka Importance in Conservation:
Agar kisi species ko uske natural habitat mein conserve karna hai, toh uske niche ke har
requirement ko samajhna aur fulfill karna jaruri hai.
Types of Niche:
2292. Habitat Niche – Jahan wo rehta hai (e.g. Tiger – dense forest).
2293. Food Niche – Kya khata hai aur kis ke saath food ke liye compete karta hai.
2294. Reproductive Niche – Kaise aur kab reproduce karta hai.
2295. Physical & Chemical Niche – Temperature, humidity, land slope, etc. (e.g. frogs need
moist environment).
4. Biome (जैव 4े 6)
Definition:
Biome ek large-scale geographical area hota hai jo similar climate, soil, vegetation aur animal life
se pehchana jaata hai.
India mein biomes alag-alag climate zones ke hisaab se milte hain jaise ki Himalayas
(Tundra/Alpine), Thar Desert, Western Ghats (Tropical Rainforest) etc.
Biome Distribution Factors:
• Temperature
• Precipitation (Rainfall)
Major Biomes with Indian/Global Context:

1. Aquatic Zones (जल-आधािरत पािरDE=तक तं6)
Aquatic systems ko “biomes” nahi kaha jaata, lekin inme bhi distinct life zones hote hain –
jahan alag-alag plants aur animals milte hain.
Aquatic Zones ke Major Differences kis basis pe hote hain?
525. Salinity (नमक क: मा6ा) – e.g. Ocean salty hota hai, lake fresh.
526. Dissolved nutrients – e.g. nitrate, phosphate.
527. Water temperature – Equator ke pass warm, poles ke pass cold.
528. Depth of sunlight penetration – Shallow water mein zyada light jaata hai, deep mein kam.
Types of Aquatic Ecosystems
1. Freshwater Ecosystem
Jisme salinity bahut kam hoti hai (less than 0.5%).Examples in India: Ganga, Yamuna, Chilika
Lake (brackish but near freshwater zone).
• Rivers, lakes, ponds, wetlands
• Home to: fishes, frogs, aquatic plants, algae, birds
2. Marine Ecosystem
Ocean-based ecosystems – Salinity zyada hoti hai (~3.5%).
• Covers 70% of Earth’s surface
• Depth ~3750 meters average
• Contains sodium chloride (NaCl) mainly
Examples in India: Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean
3. Estuaries (नद(-मFख)
Jahan freshwater (rivers) aur saltwater (sea) milte hain.
• Mixed water zone formed by tides
• Extremely productive ecosystems – rich nutrients + biodiversity
• Nurseries of marine life
Examples in India:
• Sundarbans estuary (Ganga-Brahmaputra delta)
• Godavari-Koringa estuary (Andhra Pradesh)
4. Coral Reefs (Hवाल =भ*Iयाँ)
Warm, shallow, clean tropical seas mein milte hain – sabse productive aur complex coastal
ecosystem.
• Coral animals + calcium carbonate structures
• High biodiversity: fishes, mollusks, algae, crustaceans
Examples in India:
• Gulf of Mannar (Tamil Nadu)
• Lakshadweep reefs
• Andaman & Nicobar reefs
5. Mangroves (समFK( दलदल( वन)
Evergreen tidal forests – saline aur fresh water mix area mein ugte hain.
• Found on deltas, creeks, estuaries, coastal mudflats
• Help in coastal protection (storm surge se bachav)
• Require high solar radiation
• Have salt absorbing roots
Examples in India:
• Sundarbans (largest)
• Godavari, Krishna deltas
• Mahanadi mangroves
2. Biosphere (ज(वमंडल)
Definition: Earth ka woh part jahan life possible hai – includes atmosphere (air), lithosphere
(land), aur hydrosphere (water) ka combination.
Key Points:
• Highly integrated system: Air + Water + Soil + Sunlight = Life
• Earth ke surface ke chhote se layer mein hi life possible hai(Apple ka skin jitna patla layer
socho)
Vertical Extent:
• Below sea level: ~200 meters deep tak abundant life
• Above sea level: ~6000 meters tak life (e.g. trees, birds, humans)
• Extremes (e.g. poles, Everest, Mariana trench): Life nahi ya very dormant
Important Fact:
• Spores of fungi/bacteria milte hain 8000 meters ke upar bhi, lekin wo dormant hote hain
(metabolically active nahi).
Life ka Support System:
• Energy source: Sun
• Nutrients source: Air, water, soil
• Chemicals recycle hote hain for continuous life (e.g. carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle)
Life Distribution:
• Tropical rainforests → highest biodiversity (India: Western Ghats, NE states)
• Polar regions → very low biodiversity
• Tropical regions hold >60% of global biodiversity
