2-Storey Steel Building Design Guide

The document outlines the design specifications for a 2-storey residential steel frame building, including basic assumptions, load data, member selection, gravity load analysis, column design, connection overview, and AISC design checks. Key design parameters include a moment frame structural system, specific steel grades, and calculated loads for dead, live, and wind conditions. The design adheres to AISC 360-16 standards and includes detailed member sizing and connection types.

2-Storey Steel Frame Residential

Building Design (AISC - FPS Units)

1. Basic Assumptions

- Building Use: Residential (light-duty)

- Number of Storeys: 2
- Storey Height: 10 ft
- Bay Width (X): 20 ft
- Bay Depth (Y): 25 ft
- Floor System: Metal deck with concrete slab
- Structural System: Moment frame (X), Braced (Y)
- Design Method: AISC 360-16 (LRFD)
- Steel Grade: ASTM A992 (Fy = 50 ksi)
- Units: Imperial (kips, ft)

2. Load Data

Dead Load (DL):

- Concrete slab (4" normal weight): 4" x 150 pcf = 50 psf
- Deck, finishes, ceiling: 10 psf
- Total DL: 60 psf

Live Load (LL):

- Residential floor: 40 psf

Wind Load (ASCE 7-16):

- Basic Wind Speed: 115 mph
- Exposure: B
- Enclosed Structure
- Wind loads to be computed using wind pressure coefficients

3. Member Selection

- Columns: W10x49
- Floor Beams: W12x26 (25 ft span)
- Roof Beams: W10x22
- Bracing: HSS6x6x3/8 (X-bracing)
- Composite Beams: Use shear studs at 12" spacing

4. Gravity Load Analysis

Interior Beam (25 ft span):

Unfactored Load:
- DL: 60 psf × 25 ft = 1.5 klf
- LL: 40 psf × 25 ft = 1.0 klf
- Total: 2.5 klf

Factored Load (LRFD):

- wu = 1.2 × DL + 1.6 × LL = 3.4 klf

Moment (Simply Supported):

- Mu = wu × L^2 / 8 = 3.4 × 25^2 / 8 = 265.625 kip-ft

W12x26:
- Zx = 49.6 in³ → Mn = Zx × Fy = 2480 kip-in = 206.7 kip-ft
- φMn = 0.9 × Mn = 186 kip-ft → Not adequate

Try W14x30:
- Zx = 70.4 in³ → φMn = 264 kip-ft → OK

5. Column Design

Assume tributary width = 20 ft

Load per floor:

- DL: 60 psf × 20 ft = 1.2 klf
- LL: 40 psf × 20 ft = 0.8 klf

Factored Load per floor:

- Pu = 1.2 × 1.2 + 1.6 × 0.8 = 2.72 kips

Column must support two floors → Total Pu = 2 × 2.72 = 5.44 kips

W10x49 (A = 14.4 in²):

- φPn = 0.9 × A × Fy = 0.9 × 14.4 × 50 = 648 kips → Adequate

6. Connection Overview

- Beam-to-Column: End plate or welded flange moment connections

- Column Base: Pinned or fixed base plates with anchor bolts
- Bracing: Gusset plates at beam-column intersections
- Shear: Simple shear tab or single plate connections

7. AISC Design Checks

- LRFD Method Used

- Chapter D: Flexural Members
- Chapter E: Compression Members
- Chapter F: Beam-Columns (if needed)
- Chapter J: Connections
