Topic: Contextualized Online Search and Research
Skills
Decades ago, when students are given research assignment, they usually go to the library and scan a lot of books.
One way to optimize way of searching information in the library is the use of indexes. But on this digital age, the Internet
has given us a quicker way to gather information.
In the previous lesson, you’ve learned about the definition and the significance of Empowerment Technology.
You’ve also identified some societal issues that you observed in your community or locality during this pandemic. Now
this time, let us put it into digital context by gathering more information using the internet. Thus, on this lesson you will
learn about research, research skills and how to contextualize online search to optimize way of searching in the Internet.
Let’s try to explore the internet by doing the activities below.
Let's give it a try!
You have a friend who get back from the United States. She keeps on talking about Space Needle and how
amazing it was which was located in Seattle, Washington. You decided to search it online to see what it looks like. The
only way that you remembered was the word “needle in Washington”. How would you search for it?
If you have the chance to access the internet, try open any browser and using the major search engines on the
Web, find the best way to look for “needle in Washington”. Then, answer the questions at the bottom of the page.
Major Search Engines: Google, Yahoo, Bing, Excite, Webcrawler
Guide Question:
Which search engine would be the best if you were looking for something very obscure?
_____________________________
Which search engine seemed to display the result fastest?
_____________________________
Try searching just the word “needle” and check if it would be the same result that you were getting from
your previous search.
Guide Question
In line with the first activity, do you think it is enough to find specific information with a limited ideas that you have?
How contextualizing online search can help you narrow down your search?
On the next opportunity that you have an Internet Connection, do the following below. Afterwards, answer the
follow-up questions below by encircling the word “yes or no” for your answer.
1. Try searching for [who], [the who] and [a who]
2. Try searching for blue sky and sky blue
3. Try searching for Donald Trump and donald trump
4. Try searching for red, delicious$ apple% and red delicious apple
5. Try searching for $,C++, C# and Google+
Guide Question: 1. Does each keyword affects your online search? Yes or No
2. Will order of the word matter upon searching online? Yes or No
3. Does capitalization matters? Yes or No
4. Does punctuation matters? Yes or No
5. Do searching online have exceptions in regards with the use of punctuation marks? Yes or No
When you search online especially using Google ,take note of these reminders:
1. Every word matters
As you saw on your search results, every word you enter into a query has the potential to impact
the results. Consider the difference among your results for [who], [a who], and [the who]. The meaning of
"Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom." -Thomas Jefferson
4
the query changes a lot with the addition of small words. Even tiny words, like a single ’a’, could make a
big difference
2. Word order matters
Another element that can have an impact on your results is the order in which you type in your
search terms.
Compare the results of the searches [blue sky] and [sky blue].For [sky blue], you start with a
science website that talks about why the sky is blue, and then move on to teams and businesses with
sky blue in their name. If you switch the order of those two words to [blue sky], you see a different set of
businesses and movies with blue sky in the name. These examples demonstrate how word order
changes meaning, and why word order is so important for determining what you want to find.
If it's a natural sequence to you, it's probably the right term to use in the sequence for your query.
3. Capitalization does not matter
Many people believe that Google pays a lot of attention to the details of words, such as their
capitalization. In reality, misspellings, capitalization and special characters don't matter all that
much. Notice on your search results are just the same. Google does not see uppercase or lowercase in
your search terms.
4. Punctuation does not matter
Similarly, Google does not see many special characters. For example, Google ignores the section
symbol (§), paragraph symbol (¶), the registered trademark symbol (®), and several other special
characters in your query. As a result, a query like this [© 2010] only searches for [2010].
However, there are a few characters that do make a big difference. Google is able to see the plus
sign (+) (e.g., Google+ or C++ or +Google), the pound sign (#) (e.g., #Google or C#), the at symbol (@)
(e.g., @Google), the percent symbol (%) (e.g., 45%), and more. Google can also see the dollar sign ($)
(e.g., $12). Note that you cannot do a search like [cat owners %]--if left by itself, the special character
will be thrown out.1
What is an ONLINE / INTERNET SEARCH?
It is a research method that involves the collection of information from the internet. Searching in the internet is now
part of your student’s life. Basically, Online Search already plays a vital role in business, industry, government and
education which is often use to provide solutions, information, methods or answers to queries. Check out some of the
advantages of Online Search below.
Advantages of Online / Internet Search
Access to data across the globe:
Retrieving crucial information is a challenge without Internet. Researchers would invest their time to gather
information but Internet make it easier for them to access data across the globe anywhere, anytime. It is now very easy
for them to conduct research even if they’re just sipping coffee in their lounge with deadlines to meet.
Minimum investment of time and resources:
Internet searching is the best resort for individuals who would look up for more information. Nobody would love to
sit all day in the library and scanning a lot of outdated books just to come up with a handful of information. The “what’s
new” has become beneficial to the researchers since they would like to have an updated information. It also helps them
in easing the process of collecting and publishing information, thus saves a lot of money and time.
Central pool of facts and figures:
Students like you, search the internet for academic purposes, businessman use the internet to find new marketing
strategies, teachers is for online references while researchers is for any updated information on various important topics ,
this is the greatest edge the internet offers.
Researchers and statisticians keep searching for updated information on various important topics, students search
the internet for academic purposes and this is the greatest edge the internet offers.
Capable tool for collecting information:
Surveys, questionnaires, and polls are being conducted via online mediums like emails or QR codes or embedded
on the website etc. to gather or spread vital information.
How do you start Online searching? First, you have to learn what Research is all about.
Research is a very broad term. In online search, it is used to look something up on the web in order to actively
gather information for the purpose of deepening your understanding for a certain ideas. The Internet can be like the
shelves of a library, you can access information on seemingly limitless topics in a wide variety of links. Though online
search can give us a lot of options in information gathering, one of its biggest obstacle is how to effectively and efficiently
access the huge amount of information available with the simple click of the mouse. So let’s us use this simple guidelines
that can make conducting research through online more manageable, reliable and fun!
The research process

Lessons and projects should be designed so that research time on the Web can be maximized in terms of
efficiency. This may mean gathering necessary information beforehand, having students work in groups, or focusing on
whole-class projects.
Barron and Ivers (1996) outlined the following cycle for online research projects.
Step 1: Questioning --- Before going on the Internet, you
should structure their questions.
Step 2: Planning --- Develop a search strategy with a
list of sites to investigate.
Step 3: Gathering --- Use the Web to collect and
gather information.
Step 4: Sorting & Sifting --- Analyze and categorize the
data they gathered on the Web.
Step 5: Synthesizing --- Integrate the information into
the lesson, and draw conclusions.
Step 6: Evaluating --- Assess the results, and if necessary, begin
the process again.
Searching the Web
There are billions of pages of information on the World Wide Web, and finding relevant and reliable information can
be a challenge. Search engines are powerful tools that index millions of web sites. When entering a keyword into a
search engine, you will receive a list with the number of hits or results and links to the related sites. The number of hits
you receive may vary a great deal among different search engines. Some engines search only the titles of the web sites,
and others search the full text. Techniques for using the different search tools vary. For best results, read the search tips
or hints that are provided at each search site. Also, note that some of the search engines do not allow Boolean searches
that combine words with the logical connectors of AND, OR, or NOT.
Common commands for search engines include:
Quotation Marks ( " )
Using quotation marks will help to find specific phrases involving more than one word. For example: "Martin Luther
King"
Addition Sign ( + )
Adding a + sign before a word means that it MUST be included in each site listed.
For example: + Florida + taxes
Subtraction Sign ( - )
Adding a - sign before a word means that it will NOT appear in the sites listed.
For example: + Washington -DC
Asterisks ( * )
Asterisks can be used for wild-cards in some search engines. For example:
Mexic* will look for Mexico, Mexican, Mexicali, etc.
6 Strategies to develop Research Skills
1. Check you Sources
2. Ask Good Questions
3. Go beyond the Surface
4. Be patient
5. Respect Ownership
6. Use your Networks
Top-Level Domains (TLD)
In 1985, The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) released six top-level domain names. These top-level
domains (TLD) became known as domain name extensions and represent the highest level in the Domain Name System
hierarchy. They include:
.com:
shorthand for commercial, .com was the first top-level domain in common use. While .com was initially
created for use by commercial organizations, restrictions on this were not stringent. By the mid-1990’s, .com
had become the most popular and commonly used type of top-level domain for businesses, websites, and
email.
.net:
shorthand for network, .net was created expressly for institutes that partook in network technologies such as
an internet service provider or an infrastructure company. Like with .com, the restrictions meant to limit .net to
networking purposes, was never upheld and it became one of the more popular top-level domains, with many
seeing it as a close second to using the .com top level domain.
.edu:
shorthand for education, .edu was made for education institutions. Although it was intended for universities
everywhere, the TLD .edu became associated with only educational centers in America. Schools from other
countries will use .edu in conjunction with their country-level domain, which we will discuss in the next section
below.
"Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom." -Thomas Jefferson
6
.org:
shorthand for organization, .org was created for nonprofits. As we’ve seen with these other top-level domains,
such intentions were often not upheld or enforced over time. These days, .ors is used as top-level domain by
nonprofits, for-profit businesses, schools, and communities.
.mil:
shorthand for military, .mil was created expressly for U.S. military branches. Unlike the other different types of
top-level domains, this restriction is still upheld. Now, it is quite common for .mil to use second and third-level
domains in conjunction with the .mil TLD.
.gov:
shorthand for government, .gov, like .mil, was restricted for American federal governmental agencies and
personnel use only. These days, .gov is used by governmental agencies, programs, cities, states, towns,
counties, and native American tribes.
Note: You may read page 26-28 on your E-Book for more additional information on how to develop your Research Skills.

Guide Question:
Why do you have to be keen in doing your searches online?
Internet is a powerful tool but it is one of the most dangerous place to be. Internet is defined the information
superhighway. Just like what you supposed to see in a superhighway, anyone can access to this highway, can pass
information and can grab that too. For most of us are seemingly connected via our laptops, mobile phones, tablets or
personal computer. A resource for entertainment, keeping in touch with your loved ones, making new friends and
acquire learnings are just few reasons that makes the Internet to be valuable in our daily lives. But if you use the
Internet, you could be at risk of any illegal or abusive activity – be it cyberbullying, fraud or even more something
serious. Below are some tips on how to stay safe online or surfing on any social networking site. Make sure that you
practice those tips to avoid any online mishap.
Tips so you stay safe on social networking sites

Maybe use a made up name or nickname on your profile.
Never give out personal information.
Do not make friends you don't already know personally.
Maybe use an email address that does not include your name.
Always use a ‘strong’ password. That is, don't use any names or words that someone might guess, like
the name of your dog or your favorite singer. Use random letters or numbers and change your password
regularly.
Use the strongest privacy setting when you set up your profile. This means that only your friends will be
able to view your information.
Pictures and videos can be shared very easily across the internet, so make sure you are very careful
when uploading - even if you only share it with friends, it can easily be spread much further than that.
Be very careful about sharing content online - especially if it isn't yours to share.
Illegal downloads are definitely best avoided.
Never meet up with anyone you have met online.
Make sure you know about the safety features on any networking site. Some, for example, have a ‘panic
button’ which you can press if you see something that shouldn't be there.
If anything happens online that you don't like, tell someone.

punishable by law.
Fair Use- means that an intellectual property may be used w/o consent as long as it is used in commentaries,
criticism, parodies, research and etc.
Keyloggers- used to record the keystrokes done by user. This is done to steal passwords or any other
sensitive information.
Rogue security softwares- is a form of malicious software and internet fraud that misleads users into
believing there is a virus on their computer, and manipulates them into paying money for a fake malware
removal tool.
