Foreword
I don't have a pocket full of goals written on postcards that I repeat while looking
into the mirror every day.

I've tried it, and it makes me feel silly at the time and like a failure when my goal
'deadline' comes round and that new Aston Martin wasn't sitting in the driveway.

I didn't actually want an Aston Martin at the time (although I can afford one) and
still don't. In fact both cars we have are over 6 years old and rarely get washed or
cleaned out inside so an Aston wouldn't get treated too well in my family!

But when I wanted to quit my job I did it in 9just 7 days from the point that I
really made up my mind that this was what I wanted.

And a little later, when I decided that I'd try out a membership site as a business
model, I had 300 paying subscribers in a little over two days.

So here's my take on getting what you want in life and in business. I'm going to
try not to wander into my own personal beliefs too much because it seems that

some people get easily offended, but I want to give you an idea about why I've
managed to become successful online when so many people haven't.

….and believe me – it's nothing to do with intellect, talent or anything like that
because I'm very aware of the level of intelligence of my subscribers :-) and that
I'm nothing special in the 'brains department'

Lesson #42
I promised to put up a cup rack in the kitchen for my wife months ago.

She bought these handmade, arty cups, which in my view don't hold nearly
enough coffee to get me kick started in the morning, but she likes them so I said
I'd put up the rack.

I've still not got around to doing it.

But when it came to organizing a sailing trip, sorting out the gear I'd need,
planning a route and sorting out other arrangements, I did it in a matter of
HOURS.

The difference is obvious – something I really wanted to do, and something I really
couldn't be bothered to do.

But when it comes down to being successful there are other factors involved – it's
not as simple as that.

Page 3
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

If it was then there'd be a lot more internet millionaires about.

So here's how I make it work for me...

I write my own dictionary.

My definition of 'success' might not be the same as yours.

I certainly know it's not the same as many marketers I meet and know.

Most marketers (me included) offer some form of 'replicate what I do and you can
live the same lifestyle' type of product.

That's cool – it's how I started in this business – by copying someone else's
methods and then adapting them to suit me.

But I see marketers telling people they can follow his (or her) method to get rich.

Except some of these marketers work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week to get the
results they see.

Now not only do many people (definitely me included) NOT want to work 16 hours
a day, EVERY day, but if you're still working your 9-5, it's impossible – according to
the laws of physics – to work a full time job AND 16 hours a day at your IM
business.

The hours don't exist.

Then there's the meaning of success.

One high profile marketer earned $13million in the first 6 months of last year.

Hands up how many people would ever work again if they'd pulled in that amount
of money?

My hand's half up because I enjoy helping other people to quit their jobs but $13M
in that bank might make you rethink things a little.

What else?

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 4
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

I would hope that I'm not arrogant.

I honestly think I'm not and that I treat people in the same way regardless of their
wealth and status, just as I hope people will do that to me.

I've stood at bars at IM meetings and the bit I love is that you have absolutely NO
idea who earns what.

Yet some marketers are pretty rude to the people they think are 'lower' in the
pecking order than them and butt-lick those marketers who they think are further
up the food chain than they are.

They do it (of course) in the hope of making contacts and maybe securing a
lucrative JV.

And the year after, if they're done well, they come to another seminar and they
hang round on a higher rung o the ladder (I'm laughing as I write this) and do the
same again.

These guys are stressed up to the eyeballs.

Why?

Because they haven't grasped lesson 1 in the Tony Shepherd approach to success!

Write your own dictionary definition of success.

There are always ALWAYS going to be people who are more successful than you.

And too many would-be marketers (and successful marketers for then matter)
define their own success in terms of other people's goals.

Success to some marketers is earning 5 million a year and having an office staff of
10 people to more or less run their business for them.

Sounds great.

But the sacrifice of getting to that stage is huge and something that I'm not (at
present anyway) willing to put myself through.

Page 5
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

My kids are both young and I'm not willing to do anything that stops us all hanging
around together at the moment.

When they're a bit older and at school all day then I might change my mind, but at
present I'm very happy working a few hours a day and doing very little.

Keep reading – there is a point apart from me ramming home how chilled my life
is.

So set your own dictionary definition of what your own personal success is going to
be.

Quit your job?

Earn a million dollars working 3 days a week?

Go part-time with your job but have the same money coming in from IM?

The goal is up to you.

Work it around your lifestyle, but don't just assume that money will make things
better. Money is a means to and en, and that's easy for me to say I know....

….But if you'd struggle to spend $10,000 a month (without being silly) and all your
bills would be paid and you could quit your job on this regular amount then don't
go storming in and set yourself the goal of earning $10million a year because you
don't need it!

When you've achieved your $10,000 a month you can move on and up your goal,
but setting yourself an impossibly hard task from the outset will probably end in
disappointment and feeling like a failure.

Your definition of success needs to be personal to you.

What do YOU want ?

Regardless of what your friends, family. Other marketers or celebrities on TV have,

decide what will make YOU happy?

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 6
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

Buying and converting a windmill to live in?

Spending a year traveling round the world?

Having the freedom to not work for six months while you help with wildlife
conservation?

Going back to your home town in a limo to show your old teachers / friends that
they were wrong about you?

Living in a penthouse apartment in London / New York / Rio and being part of the
social scene there?

Some of the goals above appeal to me and some don't.

It doesn't matter which are which because success is personal.

You need to live your life and not someone else's.

Get this fixed firmly in your head. Start out looking for success for your own
reasons and you're much more likely to find it.

So many people want big houses, yachts and fancy cars without actually knowing
why they want them.

They think success is being able to show other people that you're successful.

Actually success is feeling inside that you're successful.

My definition of success is being able to do the things I want to do, and NOT
having to do the things I DON'T want to do.

OK – so decide on what your own personal definition of success is.

What's next?

Realize that NOBODY is going to give it to you. You have to sort it out for
yourself.

Page 7
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

There is help to be had, though.

There are some great methods and systems, coaching programs and mentors out
there to learn from.

But I can tell you now 100% that NONE of them will do the whole job for you.

They might provide the pieces of the jigsaw, but you've got to put 'em together.

…...So lose the phrase 'It doesn't work' from your vocabulary.

Next time you hear yourself about to say this, in an internet marketing sense, find
a trusted friend to kick you in the ass as hard as he can.

By saying 'it doesn't work' you're shifting the responsibility from yourself (where it
should ALWAYS be) and onto the product creator or mentor.

Most things work for some people.

If you're very lucky an 'out of the bag' solution will work for you.

But most solutions and methods in Internet Marketing need a little tweaking to
make them work for you.

Now that's not as bad as it sounds.

Nor does it make them 'bad' methods or ones that 'don't work'

It goes back to a responsibility thing.

What you're getting when you buy something like that is the perfect solution for
the writer.

And ALL – ALL – successful people understand this.

You buy a shirt because it looks good on your friend or someone you see on TV.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 8
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

It's $1000 shirt so you're a bit peed off because when you try it one, although it
looks great – in fact it looks better than any other shirt you have, but it doesn't
make you look like a movie star.

So you tweak it – you tuck it into your jeans instead of leaving it hanging out, or
you take it back and exchange it for a different colour that matches your skin or
hair colour a bit better.

Or you try it with that Jacket you bought last month and WOW that works.

You had to tweak it a bit before it worked for YOU.

You get the analogy right?

Years ago I bought a brilliant course on how to make money from niche
newsletters.

It was wonderfully written, clear, concise and inspiring.

I couldn't WAIT to get started.

But the only problem was it told you to start by publishing a newsletter for your
hobby, interest or an area that you knew something about.

I tried at and failed miserably.

I tried again with another subject that I knew something about.

Failed.

Now at this point I could have gotten angry, asked for a refund on the grounds that
'this crap doesn't work' and told everyone I spoke to that I'd be scammed.

But it obviously did work because I could see the author was making money from
it, and the examples he gave of his own newsletters were real and I could see
them working too.

The problem was me.

I had wanted an 'off the peg' solution and in reality, all solutions needs messing
around with a little to make them fly.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 9
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

So I sat and thought, looked around at what was working, what was I interested in
and what was my 'gut' telling me to do.

So I started a newsletter about running mail order businesses from home.

I wrote the content, offered advertising space and published the whole thing from
a room in my house.

I made a lot of money from it.

99% of the work was done for me – the course was great.

But the 'spark' HAD to come from me.

The detonator in the plastic explosive had to be put there by me.

You have to be able to adapt, change or modify.......

If you're unable to adapt you will NOT become successful.

This is going to come as a very hard blow to some people, but you need to be able
to adapt systems and methods to your own life, skills and situation.

The author of a system or program does not know about you or your life.

He hasn't a clue about you.

He's writing the nearest thing to a 'solve all' program or system that he possibly
can. He can drive you 1000 miles but you've got to run the last 100 yards to the
finish line yourself.

There is NO OTHER WAY.

There is NO OTHER WAY!

All the info you need to become an online millionaire is out there for you – this
course can enable you to quit your job and get rich.

Page 10
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

But you need a little bit of your own magic dust sprinkled on top (been watching
Disney films with the kids :-) to make it work.

That's why mentoring works well for many people.

Because the teaching can be tailored to your own circumstances.

But even so you still need to think for yourself.

Because your mentor is unlikely to be with you for the rest of your life, and it's a
habit you need to develop.

Most people get life handed to them on a plate.

Unfortunately it's rarely the life they actually want.

'How did you become a sewage worker Bob?'

'I sort of just fell into it' (no pun intended)

People 'end up' in jobs, marriages, with kids, cars, houses and living in places
almost 'by accident' because our society hands them a lot of stuff on a plate, AND
because most people are dangerously out of practice when it comes to thinking
what they actually want.

Strangely enough, very FEW people are actually lazy.

Even 'useless drug addicts' become very inventive when it comes to getting what
they want.

It's not easy breaking into a house, stealing a DVD player, finding someone in a
bar who'll buy it then convincing your dealer to give you that methampetamine
$20 cheaper than usual because you're a 'bit short' today.

In fact it's hard work I'm sure.

If most addicts put the same effort into setting up a business than they do scoring
a fix they'd be able to afford their drug of choice without too much problem!

Most people aren't lazy when it comes to getting what they want.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 11
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

You've just got to know what you want – that's the hard part.

Being 'scared'

The reason that most people don't become successful is because they're 'scared'

But ask most people what they're actually scared OF and they might struggle to
answer.

The media – especially the horrible British press – like to run two main kinds of
stories …

The 'you should be annoyed about this' kind of story where they highlight people
who are claiming (allegedly) HUGE welfare payments, or immigrants (allegedly)
'jumping to the front of the queue', or soldiers (allegedly) being treated badly, or
jails being like 'holiday camps' etc etc

or

The 'society is crumbling' type of story about how knife crime is on the increase, or
how gangs are taking over the inner cities, or how burglary has risen 100% in the
last year, or murder, or rape or terrorism or whatever...

This has nothing to do with being successful directly, expect that it instills an
innate fear of 'something' in us, day after day.

We're scared of our kids getting abducted by nutters or people putting razor blades
in apples or identity theft or whatever.

Now rationally speaking – ask yourself how many times have any of the above
DIRECTLY affected you?

And if it has, how many times is it likely to AGAIN?

And even if you're totally unlucky and can say 'a lot' to both the above questions,
ask yourself 'will being scared of it stop it happening again?'

This fear is prevalent in our lives, and one of the ways it shows itself it a fear of
making decisions.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 12
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

Which is why most people fall into their life situations rather than actively decide to
do them.

(How long you been in sewage then Bob?)

And we're so used to feeling fear, even though usually it's an intangible, nameless,
faceless fear, that when it comes to actively making decisions we get scared
-because fear is our default setting.

You think I'm wrong?

How many people talk about their life goals constantly, yet spend every evening
sitting in front of the TV instead of taking action?

I don't think it's laziness – I think it's fear of making a decision – fear of doing
something that will cause them to become responsible for the consequences.

There are VERY REAL consequences in making decisions and becoming

successful.

The very SECOND you start making decisions and taking action towards your
success, you open yourself wide to scorn, sarcasm, attacks and a dozen other
different things from people whose comfort zones you're shaking.

A wife who tells her husband she's going to start taking business classes one night
a week at a local college will very often be confronted with anger, sarcasm and
emotional blackmail

'wooo so you're going to be the next Anita Roddick then eh?'

'what do YOU know about business'

'well don't expect ME to look after the kids'

'you planning to run off with an executive?'

and a LOT worse.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 13
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

The husband here is scared.

WHY is she doing this?

Will she still love him if she ends up earning twice his salary?

Is she bored of him?

Not all friends and spouses will behave like this – some will be supportive and
100% behind their other half of course.

But on the whole, making a conscious decision to improve your situation scares
the life out of those people around you and they'll react in a negative way, even if
it appears jokey.

..and it gets worse.

When success starts to arrive, you begin to wonder whether it was just a fluke –
can you do it month after month?

You'll also be hit with the shocking revelation that not everyone will like your
approach to business, and what's more, they won't be shy about telling you.

People won't just unsubscribe from your list quietly – they'll tell you exactly what
they think of you – and what a nasty person you are.

Maybe your friends will resent you earning much more money than they are, and it
might become impossible to continue a friendship.

I know of a marketer that doesn't tell his friends he earns nearly a million dollars a
year.

He's a nice guy and doesn't want to boast, but I wonder of there's a part of him
that daren't tell them because he knows what could happen.

A great problem to have, you might think?

Definitely.

Page 14
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

But also when you start to become successful you NEED to get used to making
decisions and that can be hard because it 's something that most of us need to
learn – it's not natural for us because of our upbringing.

It's best learned a step at a time, and the good news is the hardest decision is the
first one – the one when you decide to become successful.

I don't mean the one when you pretend to decide to become successful – I mean
the one where you actually start working towards it, and when you get up the day
after, you continue working towards it.

It's like stopping smoking.

May ex-smokers I know tried patches, substitutes, hypnosis, acupuncture and

other methods.

When I ask how they finally gave up they usually say 'I just quit one day'

It's because they've made a decision to do it.

And that's what I did when it came to working for myself.

I knew that the day I made that decision there would never be any question of me
working for anyone else again.

I had some scary times on the way, but because I had made my decision, the 'get
a job' solution never once raised it's head.

It was like my subconscious had shut that door and bricked it up – it just wasn't an
option.

Which meant I had to find solutions in other ways, and they've all ended up being
ones that have increased my income.

Becoming successful because there's no choice.

I'm not going into my beliefs here but one of the main reasons I think I've decided
(and it was MY decision) to become successful is that I think there's no alternative
if you want to enjoy life.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 15
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

I'm in my forties now and I'm lucky enough (and made the decisions) that meant
that most of my life has been great fun and pretty interesting too.

If I'm lucky I'm only halfway through my life, but there are no guarantees, and
despite the best attempts of governments, doctors and religious leaders, every
single life on this planet is bloody risky and might end at any point.

Anything from a serious disease to a piano landing on my head could shuffle me off
this mortal coil without any warning, which is why I pretty much live by two
beliefs:

1.I think that people who are working towards goals are generally happier than
people who aren't

[Link] short time I have in the universe is going to be a lot of fun, bring me some
extraordinary experiences and have me smiling more than I frown.

In short – I have nothing to lose by trying to get rich.

The penalty for trying to be successful and failing isn't death or even 50 lashes.

It's like getting to that certain question on the quiz show 'who wants to be a
millionaire' – the one where even if you get the answer wrong you're going home
with a certain amount of money.

And that's the reality of success here – what have you possibly got to lose?

And to help you on your way I'm going to tell you right here and now how
I got successful.

I guarantee you won't have heard this before, because it's two things that most
marketers never let out:

[Link] truth
[Link] realty, which is that you won't be able to copy these and get successful, but
you WILL be able to tweak them and do it!

I never multi-task

Because I can't do it – I'm crap at multi-taking. I have to do things in a linear

fashion – once at a time.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 16
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

This means when I get a new project going I need to see it through from start to
finish before I start the next thing.

This in turn means that I HAVE to get things finished in order to progress. Which
means that unlike most marketers I don't have a pile of unfinished websites with
half done projects that never get launched.

It also means that if I outsource something I usually have to wait for the
outsourcer to finish their bit before I can do my part next.

This forces me to take time off (never a bad thing) and I usually spend this time
with my family of on holiday.

The last time one of my freelancers had a 10 day project to do, we went up to the
cottage on the coast while he did it.

This means that I have a LIFE rather than working all the time.

Would I be tempted to work 16 hours a day if I could multi-task?

Not now, but in the early days?

Definitely.

This linear approach is probably the biggest secret to my success and successful
lifestyle than any other thing. It forced me to evolve in a business and personal
sense in a certain way.

2.I'm sloppy about work – and in NO WAY a perfectionist.

I sold 100 copies of an ebook at $27 a time a little while ago. I do this quite
regularly.

Because I'm no perfectionist, most of these ebooks go out with the occasional typo
or grammatical error in them.

I've honestly had HATE MAIL about these typos.

It really bugs some people, and I can see why.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 17
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

The typos stay in place because I very often rush to get a product out there while
I'm still buzzing about it.

In the same way I get articles outsourced.

I know I could write them better than most if not all of the writers I employ, but
from a time point of view, the 'better' 20% I could add is simply not worth it.

It doesn't matter that much.

Very often, new marketers are perfectionists and proud of it.

What they don't recognize is that it seriously holds back their output.

When someone is on their 30th rewrite of a $27 dollar ebook that should have been
launched two months ago you can see the problem.

Get it OUT, then get it RIGHT.

Out of the 1000 ebooks I sold, I had four SCREAMING refund requests because of
typos.

They were roaring mad and pretty much told me I was Satan's brother and they'd
never buy from me again.

The outcome?

I gave them a refund and banked almost $27,000 from the rest of the sales.

'Sloppy' attitude?

Yes – most certainly.

Does it matter?

Not in the bloody slightest.

Perfectionism is for brain surgeons and astronauts, not internet marketers.

You may not agree, and say 'if a job's worth doing it worth doing right'.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 18
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

You're wrong.

A job's worth doing only if you see a healthy profit at the end. You're a marketer
not a charity worker.

Show me a perfectionist internet marketer and I'll show you someone who's still
working their day job.

This obviously does not mean you should turn out crap. But it does mean you have
to let things go out when they reach a certain point of 'finishedness'.

I recognize the important bits.

Really this is a continuation from the last part.

I recognize what's important in business.

Correcting a typo isn't.

Putting a Paypal button on the bottom of the sales page and mailing my list about
a new product IS.

Spend time doing the bits that matter.

I force myself do things when I really 'can't be arsed' doing them.

Sometimes a task comes along that I hate. I really don't want to do it but it has to
be done.

If possible I'll outsource it.

If it's not possible I'll shut the door to my office and just get on with it.

Some things need to be done to move a project along. I'm constantly surprised
how many people don't have the self-discipline to do a boring but simple task and
because of this a whole product or business gets shelved.

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 19
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

This also applies to stepping outside your comfort zone. Doing things like audio
interviews, videos and public speaking made be nervous when I first started doing
them.

Now they're an important part of things and I'm glad I have the ability to force
myself to do things I'd maybe rather not.

It's a great habit to develop.

I'm not scared of failure because I've rewritten the word 'failure' in my
internal dictionary.

I'm very good at laughing and saying to my wife or people I work with 'well that
was a total balls up!'

Things go wrong.

Products don't work as well as I'd hoped.

Mistakes happen.

It's a learning process.

I don't have failures any more – I have things that I learn from.

UUUURGH!

I hate that whole 'challenges not problems' crap, but it's important that you're not
scared of trying things and one of the best ways of doing that is by looking at
failures and redefining them as experiments or trial runs.

It's a way of conning yourself sure, but it works for me.

I still get butterflies when I launch a new product but that's due to excitement not
fear, because I don't do fear anymore.

Many new marketers get to the point where a product is ready to go, but carry on
tinkering and tweaking – 'just getting it right' they'll say.....

© Laycock Publishing Ltd - All Rights Reserved. [Link]

Page 20
A KickStartCourse Lesson: “How To KickStart Your Internet Marketing Income”

What's really happening is that they've put all their expertise and skill into the
product and they're terrified it might fail, because that would make them a failure.

...so it never launches.

A lot of products never see the light of day because of this.

I would say 'shove it out and see what happens'

Don't be scared of failure. It won't kill you (unless you're a tightrope walker over
the Niagara Falls)

and finally....

I do something every day that moves my business forward.

Even if it's just sending a JV partner an email or asking a freelancer to make me

some graphics for a new site. I make sure that every day I've achieved something
that wasn't there at the start of the day.

This makes me feel good, and it moves things along.

Simple but effective.

Try it........
