Part I (Total for Part I = 24 points)
Name: _______________________________
For each of the following questions, there is one correct answer. Please circle only one answer for each
question (a, b, c, and d as applicable). No credit will be given to any question with more than one marked
answer. There is no penalty for wrong answers. Each question counts for 2 points out of a total of 100
points for the whole exam (Parts I and II ).
Please mark your answers for question I below:
1. a b c d 5. a b c d 9. a b c d
2. a b c d 6. a b c d 10. a b c d
3. a b c d 7. a b c d 11. a b c d
4. a b c d 8. a b c d 12. a b c d

Problem 1: (12 points)
A structural member is subjected to the following axial tensile forces:
Dead load: mean value 100 kN, standard deviation 10 kN
Live load due to occupancy and use: mean value 100 kN, standard deviation 20 kN
The target reliability index for the member is β = 3.0 and the coefficient of variation of the member
resistance is 12%. Assuming all variables are normally distributed:
a) Determine the probability of failure associated with the required target reliability index.
b) Determine the required average resistance associated with the required target reliability index.
Solution for Problem 1:

Problem 2: (12 points)
A steel plate (300W material) is subject to a biaxial state of tensile stresses σ = σ = 200MPa .
xx yy
a) Determine the magnitude of an additional shear stress that would yield the plate
b) Determine the magnitude of an additional shear stress that would fracture the plate
Solution for Problem 2:

Problem 3: (12 points)
An axially loaded member is subject to the following internal forces under specified loads
Dead load -50 kN
Live load due to occupancy -80kN
Live load due to wind +100 kN, or -100 kN
(positive signs denote tensile forces and negative signs denote compressive forces)
Based on NBC 2005 requirements, it is required to
a) Determine the member factored forces based on all applicable load combinations
b) Determine the governing load combinations with respect to maximum compressive and tensile factored
forces.

Problem 4: (Total 40 points)
The shown tension member consists of a double channel section (2-C200x17-350W material). The member
is connected to a gusset plate along the webs of the channels as shown.
Two options are considered:
1) A welded connection (shown in the figure on the left) in which each channel is connected through two
300 mm long longitudinal weld (all welds are located at the flange to web junctions).
2) A bolted connection consisting of eight 20mm diameter bolts as shown in the figure on the right.
