ABSTRACT
Maximizing the electrochromic response of tungsten oxide-based systems demands
highly porous electrode layers that facilitate the incorporation of electrolyte cations
during the reduction process. In this work, amorphous and porous WO3 thin films
were grown on indium tin dioxide glass substrates by magnetron sputtering at
oblique angles at two different plasma gas pressures. Remarkably, the film that
showed higher porosity presented a worse electrochromic response in terms of
durability, time response and charge density capacity. This result is analyzed and
explained on the basis of the features of the porous structure of the films: While the
typical nanostructure developed at low pressures possesses large and connected
pore voids with few ramifications, the nanostructure generated at a higher pressure
presents a rather sponge-like porous structure with numerous and small well-
connected voids. A general discussion on the role of the porous structure and,
particularly, on the accessible pore volume and area is carried out. It is concluded
that not only the accessible pore volume, defining the volume of electrolyte that
stays inside the layer, but also the accessible pore area, which defines the efficiency
of the incorporation/release of Li+ cations within the electrode material, determine
the efficiency and reversibility of the electrochromic response.
1. Introduction
Last decades, much scientific and technological efforts have been dedicated to the
development of electrochemical materials because of their significant property of
changing their optical properties upon an electrical stimulus. This behavior can offer
a variety of novel technological applications such as switches, sensors, detectors
and smart windows [1-8]. Tungsten trioxide (WO3) has an excellent intercalation
capacity and as such is a material of choice for electrochromic applications. Also, a
sufficiently high electrode potential makes it a very useful material for energy
storage applications such as lithium-ion batteries [9]. Because of these properties
WO3 is one of the most common electrochromic films that, utilized as electrodes for
smart window applications, aiming at reducing the energy consumption in buildings.
To date, numerous methods such as sol-gel, hydrothermal synthesis, pulsed laser
deposition, chemical vapor deposition, electrodeposition, atomic layer deposition,
anodization techniques or magnetron sputtering, have been used for the growth of
WO3 layers [10-19] intended as cathodes in these electrochromic systems. Key
features for this functionality are a high layer porosity that does not affect
transparency in the bleached state and the adjustment of the film morphology to
maximize the coloration capacity upon cation insertion from the electrolyte.
Ensuring the reversibility of the optical performance after consecutive switching
cycles is another requirement for this application [20]. Electrochromic coloration of
WO3 thin films entails a reversible switch from transparent (bleached state) to blue
(colored state) upon the application of a few volts potential bias and arises thanks
to an ion-electron double injection as described by the reaction [21]:
WO3 (transparent) + xM+ + xe MXWO3 (blue) (1)
where M+ stands for a cation such as H+, Li+, Na+ or K+ coming from the
electrolyte medium. Same nature of this process makes that operational and
performance parameters such as switching rate, intercalation reversibility or
coloration efficiency are strongly dependent on the accessibility of the electrolyte
inside the cathode and the capacity of this latter to incorporate these foreign
cations M+ within the WO3 structure. This demands the availability of WO3 layers
with high porosity and adequate microstructure.
In this work we fabricate amorphous WO3 coatings on indium tin dioxide glass
substrates using the magnetron sputtering (MS) technique from a tungsten target
[22]. This procedure is very common for the preparation of electrochromic films
[23,24] and due to its relatively easy up-scaling capacity is currently used at
industrial scale for the manufacturing of a great variety of devices [25]. A general
feature of the MS technique is the high dependence of the microstructure of the
deposited layers on the growth parameters such as the deposition angle (i.e., angle
between target and substrate), the plasma gas pressure or the distance between
target and substrate [12, 23, 26]. In particular, it is known that under an oblique
angle deposition (OAD) configuration, deposited films tend to be nanocolumnar with
a high percentage of void space among nanocolumns [27]. Similarly, increasing the
plasma gas pressure and/or the distance between target and substrate favors the
development of pore ramifications that end up in a sponge-like porous
microstructure [28,29]]. This may occur even for an OAD configuration, provided
that collisions with heavy particles in the plasma are numerous enough to
randomize the trajectory of sputtered atoms in the gas phase [30]. In this work, we
compare the electrochromic performance of both nanocolumnar and sponge-like
porous layers, prepared by MS in an OAD configuration. The prepared thin films
have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, XPS, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and
scanning electron microscopy, and their electrochromic performance was
thoroughly characterized by cyclic voltammetry and related tests, providing
information about durability, time response, charge density, diffusion coefficient and
coloration efficiency. A main result of this investigation is the fact that although OAD
thin films prepared at low pressures are more porous and present a higher
coloration efficiency, their charging capacity, time response, reversibility and
stability upon cycling are inferior to those found for the high pressure films. These
differences are discussed on the basis of the different type of porosity of the films,
as predicted by simulation analysis using a well-tested model [31,32]. The
conclusions drawn from this holistic study can be of direct application for industrial
MS set ups, where deposition angles may be varying during the rolling off of large
substrates in front of the target, under an adjustable working pressure.
