Velocity modulation is then defined as that variation in the velocity of a beam of electrons
caused by the alternate speeding up and slowing down of the electrons in the beam. This
variation is usually caused by a voltage signal applied between the grids through which the
beam must pass.
Current density modulation here means varying the number of electrons per unit area
(i.e., current density) as they move through space. This modulation occurs due to RF fields or
cavity resonances that cause bunching of the electron beam. These bunched electrons
produce or amplify microwave radiation through interaction with the electric fields in
resonant cavities or slow-wave structures.
