ABSTRACT
Power factor correction (PFC) plays an essential role in optimizing energy usage in electrical
systems. The Objective of this strategy is to adjust efficiently the output voltage to its desired
value, to obtain a unitary power factor and to minimize the total harmonic distortion (THDs)
injected in the three phase grid. The correction of power factor of an electrical load is one of
the problems which is commonly occurring in all industrial utilities around the globe. The
capacitor banks are connected as per the requirement of the system using the Automated
Power Factor Corrector (APFC) using Artificial Intelligent (AI) voice command of the operator.
The proposed scheme measures the value of power factor as per the load using
microcontroller. The hardware which was designed gets tested using the AI voice control
system. The control device of Alexa helps to decrease the time taken for the correction in the
power factor. This was going to increase the efficiency of the system.
UNDERSTANDING POWER FACTOR
CORRECTION
Power factor is a measure of how effectively electrical power is converted into useful work output.
It is calculated as the ratio of real power (used to perform work) to apparent power (the product of
the current and voltage in the circuit) and is expressed as a decimal or percentage. A low power
factor indicates poor utilization of electrical energy, leading to increased energy losses, higher
utility costs, and the necessity for utilities to generate more power than is needed. Traditionally,
PFC has been accomplished through passive systems, such as the addition of capacitor banks to
counteract inductive loads. However, these systems can be inefficient and slow to respond to
changes in load conditions. AI introduces advanced methodologies that enhance the capabilities
of traditional PFC systems. AI algorithms are used to analyze vast amounts of data in real-time,
enabling quick adjustments to reactive power compensation based on current load demands and
conditions. This dynamic approach enhances system efficiency, reduces energy losses, and
improves the overall quality of power delivered (2025).
AI TECHNIQUES IN POWER FACTOR
CORRECTION
Several AI techniques are employed in PFC, each contributing to improved performance in
various ways, Machine learning algorithms, for instance, analyze historical data to predict
future energy needs, allowing systems to optimize PFC in advance. This predictive capability
helps in reducing the occurrence of low power factor situations, ultimately leading to cost
savings for utility companies and consumers alike. By recognizing patterns in operational
data, ANNs enable adaptive control of power factor correction devices, ensuring that they
respond effectively to fluctuations in load without extensive manual intervention (Power
Factor Correction Technique Based on Artificial Neural Networks, 2024). This ability to
dynamically optimize energy consumption is critical, especially in environments with variable
loads, such as industrial settings with heavy machinery or residential areas with high
electricity usage variability (2023).
BENEFITS
The adoption of AI in power factor correction yields numerous advantages. One primary
benefit is enhanced efficiency. Traditional systems often operate on a fixed schedule, reacting
to load changes with delays that can result in wasted energy and costs. In contrast, AI-driven
PFC systems continually analyze real-time data, allowing for immediate adjustments that
maintain optimal power factor levels throughout varying operational conditions. This
responsiveness not only minimizes losses but also contributes to reduced peak demand
charges incurred by users. Moreover, AI systems enhance predictive maintenance
capabilities. By monitoring performance data and generating insights about when equipment
is likely to fail or require maintenance, these systems enable organizations to minimize
downtime and extend the lifespan of their PFC equipment. This proactive approach supports
sustainability objectives as organizations can optimize their asset management practices

REAL-TIME APPLICATIONS
Numerous industries are beginning to use AI technologies for power factor correction,
highlighting its practical benefits. For example, sound applications have been documented in
railway systems, where AI-driven UPQC (Unified Power Quality Conditioner) systems maintain
power quality across electrified networks through synchronized control of both shunt and
series active power filters. These systems utilize ANNs to adaptively respond to fluctuating
traction loads in real time, ensuring optimized energy use and reduced harmonic distortions
(2025). By integrating IoT devices with AI algorithms, organizations can achieve
unprecedented control over their energy usage profiles, facilitating real-time data
transmission and decision-making that reduces the reliance on static PFC methodologies
