This file provides information on deploying the Borland
Database Engine (BDE) and/or SQL Links. We recommend you
read the entire contents of this file prior to deploying
the BDE or SQL Links.

1. INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

It is required that you use InstallShield Express, or
another INPRISE certified install program to deploy your
applications.
Database applications that use the Borland Database Engine
(BDE) to effect database access require that the BDE be
deployed with the application. The BDE may be deployed in
whole or in part (see "2.3 Partial BDE Installs").
Installing only part of the BDE allows you to reduce the
disk space footprint of the BDE by providing only those
parts the application actually needs.
A database application that uses SQL Links to effect
connection with SQL databases requires that both the BDE
and SQL Links be distributed with the application. See
"3.1 Deploying SQL Links" for more information on dis-
tributing SQL Links.
When deploying the BDE or SQL Links with an application,
you must use InstallShield Express or another INPRISE
certified installation program to install the BDE or SQL
Links. See "2.2 Certified Installation Programs" for more
information.
2. BDE DEPLOYMENT (ALL DATABASE APPLICATIONS)
===========================================================
2.1 BDE Redistributable Files
-----------------------------
In accordance with the Additional License Terms of this
product, you can distribute the Borland Database Engine
(BDE) files with your application using an INPRISE
certified Redistributable Install program such as
InstallShield Express or other compliant install programs.
You can redistribute only those BDE files selected by the
INPRISE certified install program.
2.2 Certified Installation Programs
-----------------------------------
INPRISE products which include redistribution rights
include an INPRISE certified install program, such as
InstallShield Express, to ensure proper installation and
uninstallation of your applications so that they co-exist
well with other applications which use the Borland Database
Engine (BDE) including those created with Visual dBASE,
Paradox, Delphi, and C++Builder.
InstallShield Express also makes it possible to properly
distribute subsets of the BDE. This is useful, for example,
if you want to distribute an application that will only use
Paradox tables and you do not want to include additional
files for dBASE support. INPRISE has also provided details
to other install vendors such as Sax Software, WISE Soft-
ware, Great Lakes Business Systems (GLBS) makers of the
WISE install tool and Eschalon Development so that their
products can also be ensured to be fully compatible with
the BDE.
From time to time, INPRISE may, at its discretion, certify
additional installation programs for use as the INPRISE
Certified Install Program for this product. To obtain a

2.3 Partial BDE Installs
------------------------
You may optionally install only a subset of the Borland
Database Engine (BDE) with applications. This reduces the
overall size of the BDE installation as you only
redistribute the parts of the BDE an application actually
needs. For example, if the application only uses dBASE
tables, you can limit the parts of the BDE distributed to
just the core BDE files and dBASE-related BDE system files.
A subset installation of the BDE is controlled by Install-
Shield Express (or other INPRISE certified installation
program). Options during the install script design phase
guide you through a full or partial BDE redistribution. See
the on-line Help for the installation program used for
details on defining a partial BDE redistribution using that

Note that since we allow deployment of BDE files and
subsets using an INPRISE certified installation program, we
do not otherwise allow deployment of individual BDE files.
There are important reasons for this:
* It is impossible to test all possible configurations of
the BDE. Therefore, Inprise quality assurance testing is
performed only on systems with full installations of the
BDE. BDE Developer Support is only provided for systems
with a full installation of the BDE. Using a certified
installation program reduces the chance of improper
installation.
* Improper installation of BDE or BDE subsets can cause
other applications using BDE to fail. Such applications
not only include INPRISE products such as Intrabuilder
and Visual dBASE, but many other applications using BDE
such as those built with C++Builder and Delphi.
* Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT use the registry
instead of .INI files, and making the correct entries and
deletions for install and uninstall is another complex
task.
By working closely with INPRISE certified install program
providers, we can ensure that all the BDE installation,
registry, and uninstall issues are handled correctly in all
cases including subsets of the BDE and SQL Links. (SQL
Links comes with the Client/server and Enterprise editions
of Delphi 4.)
3. SQL LINKS DEPLOYMENT (CLIENT/SERVER APPLICATIONS)

3.1 Deploying SQL Links
-----------------------
If you received this product as an upgrade, it constitutes
a single product with the INPRISE product which you
upgraded. Licensed, registered users of this product may
redistribute the files listed below (in the section "3.2
SQL Links Redistributable Files") with programs created
with this product, subject to all of the terms and cond-
itions of the Additional License Terms for the Borland
Database Engine (BDE). Note that the SQL Links redist-
ributable files can only be redistributed for the specific
purpose of executing end-user SQL Links software
applications created with this version of the product.
Although SQL Links applications developed with this product
can be redistributed to an unlimited number of servers for
use by end-users, you may not "redistribute" or otherwise
share the SQL Links software itself with other developers
for creating SQL Links software applications.

INPRISE products which include redistribution rights
include an INPRISE certified install program, such as
InstallShield Express, to ensure proper installation and
uninstallation of your applications so that they co-exist
well with other applications which use SQL Links including
those created with Visual dBASE, Paradox, Delphi, and
C++Builder. When distributing SQL Links with applications,
you are required to use InstallShield Express or other
INPRISE certified installation program to install SQL Links
with the application.
3.3 Database Server Client Software
-----------------------------------
In addition to SQL Links files, client/server applications
require client files for interface to communication proto-
cols (such as TCP/IP). These client software files are part
of the database server system, are NOT part of nor bundled
with SQL Links, and are supplied by the SQL database system
vendor. Client software comes with SQL database server
software, so if you have the database server software you
will most likely also have the client software. Refer to
your database administrator (DBA) or server documentation
for specific information on installing client software.
4. BDE ADMINISTRATOR
===========================================================
When the Borland Database Engine (BDE) is installed with a
deployed BDE-using application, the configuration utility
BDE Administrator is also installed. Its use with deployed
applications is authorized.
