Ode to Wild Thing

W
e said farewell to a family
member today. Wild Thing
was a Mexican-built 1974
Volkswagen Thing, which we adopted
into our family in May of 2007. His
former foster father was Charlie Van
Allen, a dear friend and fellow MVVC
member, who lived in the tiny hamlet
of Caro, in Michigan’s Thumb Region.
Charlie was a Social Services Case
Worker, and a huge Volkswagen enthu-
siast. He already owned a white VW

cover (as needed), lowered the wind-
shield, added leopard covered seats,
and covered the bumpers and running
boards with vinyl. He also gave him a
great look and stance, replacing the
rear fenders with a fiberglass set
that were 3-inch wider on each side,
and repainting him from Volkswa-
gen orange to a much brighter Chevy
orange. Charlie’s wife Marilyn ran an
antique and curiosity shoppe in down-
town Caro, and supplied him with Feeling the wind in our faces as we cruised the Safari-themed Wild Thing made quite an

Over the years, Wild Thing would
go on a number of adventures with
us, from car shows and car cruises, to
leisurely drives along the lakeshore
on beautiful sunlit summer days. We
added a few touches to him here and
there, like a new stereo, cocoa floor
mats, a tweed glove box cover, locking
interior door panels (to put our personal
affects in during car shows), and round
fog lights, with hemp roping wrapped
around the front bumper in between
them. We also added a white vinyl
stripe along the sides at the bottom,
to highlight the white Empi 5-spoke
wheels. And because so many of those
born after 1974 kept asking us if he was
a kit car, we added a VW emblem to the
rear, along with a sticker, “The Thing” –
all the better to acquaint them with one
of VW’s rarer models! We would display
him like Charlie did, with monkeys
hanging from the roll bar, and a large
stuffed gorilla in the driver’s seat. We

Wild Thing’s biggest adventure with
us was attending Kubel Treffen in 2015.
We had already attended one of these

and were so inspired, we immediately
planned to return WITH Wild Thing at
their next closest location. That came
in 2015, when one of our fellow club
members, Gary Mondshine, hosted
Kubel Treffen in Tipp City, Ohio. That
was very doable, being so close to home,
so off we went! We had a ball hanging
out with fellow Thing enthusiasts all
weekend, and even going to the local
drive-in to watch a movie with our front
windshields dropped (much to the envy
of everyone else swatting mosquitos)!
And in the end, Wild Thing won one of
the prized Judge’s Choice Awards for his
popularity and uniqueness.
But all good Things must come to
an end, and since hubby retired, we
decided it was time to downsize and
find Wild Thing a new adoptive parent.
Thanks to a referral from another dear
friend and fellow club member, Jay
Burton, we found him in John Parker,
another enthusiast in Sylvania, Ohio. In
John’s capable hands, Wild Thing will
continue to happily roll on for many
years to come! Farewell, old friend, and
see you ‘round!

LA KOMBI
DE BOYLE HEIGHTS
When HotVWs selected Juan Carre-

one request: “It needs to be photo-

BY ALEX ARREDONDO

I
n the heart of Boyle Heights, just a few blocks east
of downtown Los Angeles, is a community of 100,000
residents with a rich Mexican-American heritage. The
history dates back from the late 1890s when early
settlers were ethnically diverse, with Jewish and Mexi-
can families. At the center of Boyle Heights is Mariachi Plaza,
which resembles famed Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico City. It
provides musical artists a gathering point to showcase their
talent for hire. After World War II, Jewish families began to
move west because of the construction of Interstate 5 and
lack of new housing.
Boyle Heights has a rich history of professional athletes,
political leaders such as Antonio Villaraigosa and Edward
R. Roybal, art and cultural icons, actor Anthony Quinn,
record producer Lou Adler, together with rapper Taboo
and William Adams aka [Link]. Let’s not forget the dark
history of Italian American Mafia, where Mickey Cohen
oversaw the Cohen crime family from Los Angeles. The
area has been memorialized in Hollywood films such as
Bugsy (1991), So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993), L.A.
Confidential (1997), The Black Dahlia (2006) and Gangster
Squad (2013) starring Sean Penn.

CAL STYLE IN BOYLE HEIGHTS

Cal Style VWs (a local term describing lowered stock VWs
– Ed.) first began in the late ’70s when Rene Ruelas slammed
his stock Ghia on original Porsche Fuchs rims. Rene was
influenced by his brothers of the Dukes lowrider car club
that dates to the late 1950s. At the boom of slammed Volk-
swagens was Boyle Heights, where cruising was a nightly
event. Kids from Southern California would drive to Whit-
ter Boulevard, 6th Street Bridge, Soto Street, and “The

JARROD GREW UP WATCHING HIS FATHER BUILDING MANY VWS.

Young Jarrod knew that as soon as he became old enough to drive,
he would own one for himself – and it would for sure be a Volk-
swagen. Lucky Jarrod. Not many people got an Oval Window as
their first VW. His parents helped him buy a 1957 Bug; it was a Cal
Look sedan, and he just loved driving and working on it. However,
time passed and with a growing family, he had to sell the Beetle to
purchase something better suited for them.

Over the years, he owned several him, in the form of another 1957 Oval,

down when the opportunity came to Jarrod told us: “It was originally a
hardtop, but I really wanted a ragtop.
So, I set out to find a donor car and
located a ’62 Ragtop that I purchased as
a parts car for this ’57.” He also started
hunting for some body parts to repair
the damaged sections. He found the
NOS spare tire tray from Käfer Nostal-
gia and the original rear fender locally.
Then, he took the body for media
blasting at MIPC in Mulberry, Arkan-
sas. After stripping the entire body, he
immediately brought the car back to
his shop before shooting epoxy inside
and out to protect it from corrosion.

ROTISSERIE & GRAFTING

Jarrod mounted the body on a
rotisserie and started the bodywork,
doing plenty of priming and blocking
to get the car just right. Meanwhile, he
also spent a lot of time searching for
glass, seats, parts for the dash, gauges,
fuel tank, etc. Though it was a “first”

measurements.
This Oval means a lot to Jarrod. He
nicknamed it “Nighttrain”, which came
42 from his dad Ken’s involvement with
CB radio, as he was a truck driver. Ken

had fancy trucks and always equipped

them with train horns; so, everybody
called him “Nighttrain.” He gave Jarrod
a lot of advice and directions for work-
ing on this project. Unfortunately, Ken
passed away in 2014 at the age of 64,
before Jarrod finished the vehicle.

TAKING SHAPE
As “Nighttrain” took shape, Ken
gladly stopped by Jarrod’s shop with
his big truck to check on the progress.
Father and son were looking forward
to visiting VW shows together with
the completed project… After Ken
passed, Jarrod lost interest in finish-
ing the car; however, a few years later,
he finally decided to finish it, using
various ideas from his father. In a way,
he wanted to celebrate his father’s life.
Concentrating on the drivetrain
first, Jarrod went to work on the ’62
pan and installed an air ride suspen-
sion kit. He also ended up carefully
converting the rear suspension to
IRS – note purposely limited wheel
camber. Modifications continued with
a Jer-Fab link-pin beam featuring a

STOPPING THE ROLL

When it came to stopping the vehi-
cle, Jarrod chose an Airkewld disc kit

front. He polished some of the brake Jarrod Keith and "Nighttrain" are involved in Highly detailed under the hood... Air bag

red along the way. In the rear, Airkewld
supplied an air ride kit, although
Jarrod had to go through three sets of
trailing arms to get the exact stance he
wanted. After the build and mockup,
he disassembled everything and had
the whole pan powder-coated black
at MIPC.
Being uncertain about the color to
select, Jarrod mixed several different
paints and sprayed each fender with Jarrod chose ISP West's "Vintage Series" 80mm Air bag control switches and air pressure

Jarrod decided to use a Bernie Berg-
mann Porsche 911-style shroud. He
also installed a Clyde Berg breather
box and built an oil cooler with fan,
mounted under the rear package tray.
With the body and pan done, time

When meeting the seller, they
had about an hour of daylight left to
check out the coupe. “We asked him
a lot of questions, including why it
had an expired 1984 tag on the license

car in ’83, got it running, painted it,
redid the interior using brown vinyl,
and never drove it – so he let the tags
expire. He also said he put no more
than 600 miles on the car since.” Dan
and Lola liked what they saw and
decided to buy it.

VW Club has been the premier Volkswagen show in the Pacific
Northwest for nearly four decades. At last year's event, we were
delighted to see three VW-powered Snow Tracs at the show, of which
two were operational. This year we were blown away when six of
them drove into the event under their own power! What an amaz-

against the asphalt as they cruised by in unison. Perhaps this will
continue to be a growing attraction at the show? We certainly hope so.

some parts are developed and made. One of the biggest air-cooled “VW

Okay, let’s talk about our main topic:

1949 up to the 1966 model. So, we won’t
blame you if you cannot find visual
differences between early and late
fenders. Actually, back in the day, it was
quite common to have later or generic
reproduction front fenders installed on
earlier cars when being restored.
If you look at the details of pre-1960
original fenders, you might notice that
the area around the headlights have a
deeper “carving” than later models – it
almost looks like a hump. There is also
a pressed crease line near the running
board mounting point as well. You
will find another small detail under
the fender: the headlight bucket has
a steel tube connected to the body for
headlight wire protection. To retain
these correct details specific to the
earlier model, you will have to find an
early original fender in good condi-
tion, which is very difficult and quite
expensive. But you don’t have to worry You see both the left and right side top/headlight sections of the fenders in this Styrofoam. This

This process is critical since it helps engi-

neers to design the tooling appropriately,
and to accommodate the press machine
and production procedures.
Next step: the Styrofoam. It is
sculpted based on the plaster surface
created from the sample. This Styro-
foam will become the shape of the tool-

shaped, the Styrofoam is sent to the
foundry facility. The sculptured Styro-

it remains in the sand, before being
decomposed by the poured molten
metal. This method is called “lost foam

Over the last few decades, Mk1 Rabbits/Golfs (1974-83) have evolved

the floats varied dramatically, as did
their size and volume.
After getting a weight on all the
floats, I used a graduated cylinder to
get the volume in CCs for all the units.
Armed with this information, the buoy-

I’m sure there was a small error factor
in my technique, but since we are using
the numbers for approximate calcula-
tions and opinions, some information is
a whole lot better than none.
If the buoyant force on an object is
greater than the weight of that object –
in other words, if the object weighs less
than the amount of water (or in our case
gasoline) it has displaced – it will float.
But if the buoyant force is less than the
object's weight, the object will sink. If
the object (float) weighs more than the
gasoline it displaces, the force of its
weight cancels out and in fact "over-
rules" that of the buoyant force. For
example, if a brass float fails and fills up
with gasoline, it will sink into the float Any float that has less weight than the water (or gasoline) that it displaces will float! Just how much
