Who is a Consumer?

 You are a consumer when you buy things for yourself or family

 Like buying food, clothes, or toys from shops

 Also when you pay for services like haircuts or bus rides

 Not when you buy things to sell to others

 The law protects all consumers

Example: Buying ice cream makes you a consumer!

Key Idea:
A consumer is anyone who buys things to use, not to sell. Everyone is a
consumer in daily life!

Need for Consumer Rights -

1. Protection from cheating – Consumer rights stop shops from selling fake,
expired, or low-quality products.
2. Fair prices – They ensure you pay the right price and are not overcharged
for goods and services.
3. Safe products – Rights ban harmful items (like Maggi with excess lead) to
keep you healthy.
4. Truth in ads– They punish false claims (e.g., "Get rich quick!") so you
aren’t fooled.
5. Right to complain– You can return faulty products (like a broken phone)
and get refunds.
6. Equal power – These rights balance the power between big companies and
ordinary buyers.

Why? Because without rights, sellers can trick you, and you won’t get justice!

Right to Safety

 "Protection from hazardous goods"

 Right to Safety protects us from unsafe goods.
 It means products should not harm our life or health.
 Companies must test products before selling.
 Unsafe items should be banned or recalled.
Example: Samsung Note 7 phones had battery blasts.
They were stopped from selling to protect people.

Right to Information

You have the right to know everything about a product before buying it!

What must be shown clearly:

- Price (no hidden costs)
- Expiry date (no old products)
- Ingredients (what's inside)
- Instructions (how to use safely)

Why this matters:

- Helps you choose wisely
- Stops shops from cheating

Real Example:
In 2022, the FDA fined a chocolate company for not listing nuts in their
ingredients (dangerous for allergy sufferers)!

Remember: Always check labels carefully before buying!

Conclusion

Consumer rights empower us to shop confidently, but true change

happens when we actively use these rights. By staying alert to unfair
practices, asking the right questions, and demanding proper receipts, each
of us can help create honest markets. Remember - every complaint you
make not only solves your problem but also pressures businesses to improve.
The consumer courts stand ready to help when needed, proving that justice
is accessible to all. Ultimately, an informed and proactive consumer
community leads to better products, fairer prices, and more ethical business
practices for everyone's benefit.

The Consumer’s Promise

I pledge to check with careful eyes,

For truth in ads and hidden lies.

I’ll take my bill – my proof, my right,

And question if the price seems tight.

When products fail or services cheat,

I’ll stand my ground – demand receipt!

I’ll learn my rights, both old and new,

And share them with my buddies too!
