GROUP SHAMANIC RITUAL: “THE JOURNEY OF THE FOUR DIRECTIONS”
Purpose:
To call upon the spirits of the Four Directions, deepen connection with nature and spirit, and facilitate
inner visioning and healing within a sacred community container.
Participants:
6–20 people (can be scaled)
Designated roles: Ritual Leader, Drummer(s), Fire Keeper (if fire is involved), and optional
Anointer/Smudger
Items Needed:
• A central altar (cloth, crystals, feathers, bowls, candles, etc.)
• Smudging materials (sage, palo santo, sweetgrass, or sound tools if non-smoke option is
needed)
• Drums/rattles/other instruments
• A singing bowl or chime
• Offerings: cornmeal, water, flowers, seeds, stones
• Small items for journeying (eye masks, blankets, journal and pen)
• Optional: fire pit or large central candle
🔘 1. OPENING THE CIRCLE (15 min)
Leader:
"Welcome, fellow travelers. We gather today to walk between the worlds. All that is done here is done
in love, integrity, and sacredness."
Smudging or Sound Clearing (5–10 min):
One by one, participants are cleansed with smoke, water, or sound. As they are cleared, each enters the
circle and stands around the central altar in silence.
Chime or Singing Bowl:
A single clear tone to mark the transition into sacred space.
Statement of Intention (by Leader):
“This is a circle of respect. We call upon Spirit to guide us, protect us, and reveal what we need to
know. May we leave behind all distractions and open to wisdom.”
🧭 2. CALLING IN THE FOUR DIRECTIONS (15 min)
Participants or the Leader walk to each cardinal direction (marked physically if possible) and speak
aloud.
GROUP SHAMANIC RITUAL: “THE JOURNEY OF THE FOUR DIRECTIONS”
East (Air / Mind / Beginnings):
“Spirits of the East, winds of knowledge, clarity, and new beginnings—bless this circle. May your
breath awaken our minds and guide us in vision.”
South (Fire / Heart / Passion):
“Spirits of the South, flames of inspiration, courage, and joy—enter this space. May your fire ignite our
hearts and guide us in transformation.”
West (Water / Emotions / Dreaming):
“Spirits of the West, tides of intuition, healing, and descent—be with us. May your waters wash away
fear and guide us through inner depths.”
North (Earth / Body / Wisdom):
“Spirits of the North, bones of the land, ancestors, and protectors—stand beside us. May your grounded
strength uphold us.”
Center (Spirit / Great Mystery):
“Great Spirit, Mystery beyond names, thread between worlds—fill this space. Unite us in sacred
purpose.”
🐍 3. EARTH CONNECTION & MOVEMENT (10–15 min)
Grounding Movement (facilitated):
Invite everyone to take off shoes (if outdoors), and feel the earth. Do slow breathwork followed by
organic movement/dance to awaken the body.
Prompt (Leader):
“Feel the Earth beneath you. Feel the life within you. Move like water, like wind, like fire. Move like
the wild soul you are.”
Background drumming/rattles can begin softly to enhance flow.
🔥 4. DRUM JOURNEY: MEETING YOUR SPIRIT GUIDE (30–40 min)
Preparation (5 min):
Participants lie down with eyes closed, wrapped in blankets or shawls. Leader explains:
“You will journey with the drum to the Lower World, a place of roots and primal knowing. You may
meet a spirit guide or animal who walks with you.”
Journey Instructions:
• Imagine a place in nature—a hollow tree, cave, or root system.
• Descend into the Earth.
• Let a guide come forward.
GROUP SHAMANIC RITUAL: “THE JOURNEY OF THE FOUR DIRECTIONS”
• Ask: “What do you wish to teach me?”
• When the drum shifts (rapid beat), return the way you came.
Drumming (20 min):
Steady heartbeat rhythm. At the end, a call-back rhythm (fast beat, 7 rounds, then silence).
Return (5 min):
Slowly guide people back. Invite gentle movement, journaling, or silence.
🌿 5. SHARING & OFFERING (20 min)
Circle Sharing:
Each participant may (if they choose) share what they saw, felt, or received. No advice or interpretation
—only active listening and gratitude.
Offering to the Earth (symbolic):
Each person steps forward and offers something to the altar or a natural element (a flower, grain, or
water) while silently expressing thanks.
🌀 6. SOUND & TONING CEREMONY (10–15 min)
Invite vocal expression—toning, chanting, or humming as a group. You might begin with a simple tone
like “AHHH” or a chant such as:
“We are the weavers, we are the web,
We are the dreamers, we are the thread.”
This unifies the group in resonance and vibrational alignment.
🌟 7. BLESSING & CLOSING THE DIRECTIONS (10 min)
Closing the Directions (in reverse):
Thank and release each direction.
“Spirits of the North—thank you for your strength. Go in peace.”
Repeat for West, South, East, and Center.
Group Closing:
All hold hands or touch shoulders.
Leader:
“May what we have seen remain with us. May the spirit of this circle live in our hearts. Walk in beauty,
dream in truth, and serve in love.”
GROUP SHAMANIC RITUAL: “THE JOURNEY OF THE FOUR DIRECTIONS”
Final Act:
Blow out the central candle or let the final drumbeat echo into silence.
