Crop Production & Management


# The word Agriculture derived from two Latin words, ‘agre’ or ’agri’ means field & ‘cultura’ means
to cultivate.
# The science and practise of farming and cultivation of crop plants is called agriculture.
# Rearing of livestock including poultry called animal husbandry.
# Grains Provide us carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibres.
# Pulses are protein rich seed of leguminous plants.
# Vegetables and fruits are rich source of minerals and vitamins.
# The branch of Agriculture that deals with the production of fruits, vegetables, flowers and
decorative plants is called horticulture.

Classification Of Crops: -
# On the basis of Crop Produce –
Cereals, Pulse, Oil seeds, etc
# On the basis of Season –

* Kharif Crops - Grown during summer & monsoon season.


- Cultivated during June/July & harvested in
September/October.
- Require more water for their growth.
- Eg.: - Paddy, Maize, Cotton & Soyabean.

* Rabi Crops - Grown during winter season.


- Cultivated during October-December & harvested in
march/April.
- Require less water for their growth.
- Eg.: - Wheat, Pea, Gram & Mustard crops.

# One the basis of Purpose –


* Food crop – Grown for food, e.g. wheat, paddy, maize, etc.
* Subsistence crop – Grown to fulfil the needs of a farmer & not for selling purpose, e.g.
wheat, corn, rice, etc.
* Cash crop – Grown mainly for profit & not for use by farmer, e.g. tea, coconut, cotton,
etc.
