Tutorial 1- Compaction Techniques
1. A new railway corridor is proposed in the region with loose soil layers up to 7 to 10m. The
particle size distribution curves were plotted for the collected soil samples from three sites.
(a) Classify the soils based on the given PSD curves as per IS 1498 (2007).
(b) Evaluate the suitability of dynamic compaction method based on the particle size distribution
and soil classification for 3 soils.
(c) According to Mayne et al. (1984), depth of improvement, D can be calculated as
D=α √ WH
where W is the weight of tamper (in tons), H is the drop height (in m) and α is the coefficient
of improvement depth.
Assuming α as 0.5 and weight of the tamper be 20 tons, evaluate the required drop height
necessary for this project.
(d) Comment on the expected ground subsidence after the ground treatment for 3 soil sites.
