MODULE 2
SOLVED PROBLEMS
Q2.1 )Write the equation for finding out the settling velocity for small spherical particles under
laminar flow. Find the settling velocity of a discrete particle of 0.03mm diameter and specific
gravity 2.60 under laminar flow conditions. Kinematic viscosity of water 0.0102 cm2/sec.

Q 2.2 ) The maximum daily demand at a water purification plant has been estimated as 12
million litres per a day. design the dimension of a suitable sedimentation tank (fitted with
mechanical sludge removal arrangements) for the raw supplies, assuming a detention period
of 6 hours and velocity of a flow as 20 cm per minute.[ KTU JUNE 2022 , 14 MARKS ]
A ) Quantity of water to be treated in one day (24 hours)
= 12 million litres
= 12 x 106 litres
Quantity of water to be treated in one hour
= 12 x 106 / 24 litres = 0.5 x 106 litres
Quantity of water to be treated during the detention period of 6 hours,
= 0.5 x 106 x 6
= 3 x 106 litres
= 3 x 103 m3
The capacity of tank required = 3000 m3
Velocity of flow to be maintained through the tank = 20 cm/minute
= 0.2 m/minute
The length of tank required = Velocity of flow x Detention period
= 0.2 x 6 x 60 m
= 72 m
Cross sectional area of tank required ,
= Capacity of tank / Length of tank
= 3000 / 72 m2
= 41.67 m2 say 41. 7 m2
Assuming water depth in the tank as 4m ,
Width of tank required = 41.7 / 4 = 10. 42 m say 10. 5 m
Using a free-board of 0.5 m , the overall depth = 4 + 0.5 = 4.5 m
Hence rectangular sedimentation tank with an overall size of 72m x 10.5m x 4.5m is used.
