Membership Table in Set Operations

The document outlines a tutorial for CSI131 Discrete Structures 1 focused on set theory. It includes several proofs demonstrating properties of sets, such as the union and intersection of sets, and the relationship between empty sets and other sets. The tutorial emphasizes proving subset relationships to establish set equality.

CSI131 Discrete Structures 1

Tutorial - Sets

1. Prove that if A and B are sets, then (A ∪ ∅) = A by showing that:

(A ∪ ∅) ⊆ A

2. Prove that if A and B are sets, then (A ∩ A) = A by showing that:

(A ∩ A) ⊆ A

3. Prove that if A and B are sets, then (∅ − A) = ∅ ; by showing that:

(∅ − A) ⊆ ∅

4. Prove that if A and B are sets, then A ∪ (A ∩ B) = A by showing that:

A ∪ (A ∩ B) ⊆ A

5. Prove that if A and B are sets, then (A∪(B −A)) = (A∪B) by showing
that:

(a) (A ∪ (B − A)) ⊆ (A ∪ B)
(b) (A ∪ B) ⊆ (A ∪ (B − A))

6. Show that if A, B and C are sets, then A ∩ B ∩ C) = (A ∪ B ∪ C):

(a) by showing each side is a subset of the other side.

(b) using a membership table.
