Testing Wire Resistance with a Megger

Chapter 14 of the RME Reviewer covers various electrical concepts including the characteristics of squirrel-cage induction motors, the effects of heat on insulation, and the importance of proper connections in electrical installations. It also discusses safety measures, such as grounding in electric tools and the use of a megger for testing resistance. Additionally, the chapter addresses the efficiency of transformers and the implications of voltage drop in wiring systems.

RME REVIEWER CHAPTER 14

1. One identifying feature of a squirrel-cage induction motor is that it has no

commutator or slip rings.

2. With respect to a common light bulb, it is correct to state is that lower

wattage bulb has the higher resistance.

3. The life of insulation used in electrical installations directly affected by

heat. The electrical insulation which can least withstand heat is rubber.

4. A conduit coupling is sometimes tightened by using a strap wrench rather

than a stillson wrench, the strap wrench is used when it is important to avoid
damaging the outside finish.

5. High-voltage cable which is to be installed in underground duct is

generally protected with a lead sheath.

6. The load side is usually wired to the blades of a knife switch to make the
blades dead when the switch is opened.

7. The factor which will have the least effect on the voltage at the most
distant point from the source of supply for a two wire circuit is whether the
supply is 25 cycle or 60 cycle AC.

8. You are to check the power factor of a load, you cannot get a power factor
meter, you would use an ammeter, a wattmeter, and a voltmeter.

9. The purpose of having a rheostat in the field of a DC shunt motor is to

control the speed of the motor.

10. Most electric power tools, such as electric bills, come with a third
conductor in the power lead which is used to with a third case of the tool to a
grounded part of the connect the case of the tool to a grounded part of the
electric outlet. The purpose for having his extra conductor is to protect the
user of the tool should the winding break down to the case.

11. To determine directly whether all finished wire installations posses

resistance between conductors, and between conductors and ground, use a
megger.

12. Connections of conductors to terminal parts must ensure a good

connection without damaging the conductors.
13. The connection between the grounded circuit conductor and the
equipment grounding conductor at the service is called the main bonding
jumper.

14. To handle a three-phase unbalanced system, balanced the system by

making all loads equal to the largest single phase load.

15. When re-routing conduit, it may be necessary to increase the wire size if
the distance considerably greater, in order to compensate for voltage
drop.

16. A transformer is more efficiently utilized when the load has a high power
factor.

17. When using #12-2 with ground, the ground will not carry current under
normal operation.

18. A 10 ohm resistance carrying 10 A of current uses 1 000 watts of power.

19. The voltage drop in a line can be decreased by decreasing the load
and increasing the wire size.

20. A box contains one grounded and three underground conductors, from
one underground to the grounded conductor 208 V is measured; the other
two underground measure 120 V to the grounded conductor, the system is
delta.

21. The term anode refers to rectifier.

22. A dual voltage motor will run more efficiently at the higher voltage.

23. Electron flow produced by means of applying a pressure to material is

called piezoelectricity.

24. If a live conductor is contracted accidentally, the severity of the electrical

shock is determined primarily by the contact resistance.

25. Continuous load is a load where the maximum current is expected

to continue for three hours or more.

26. Concealed is made inaccessible by structure or finish of the

building.

27. The conductors and equipment for delivering energy from the electricity
supply system to the wiring system of the premises served is called service.
28. Nonmetallic extension is an assembly of two insulated conductors
within a nonmetallic jacket or an extruded thermoplastic covering.

29. On an Edison 3-wire system, some incandescent lamps are observed to

be brighter, and others to be dimmer, than normal. What is the most likely
trouble? Poor neutral connection.

30. The type letter for moisture-resistant thermoset is RHW.

31. The maximum size fuse to be used in a branch circuit containing no

motors depends on the load.

32. Is it permissible to install direct current and alternating current

conductors in one pull box? Yes, if insulated for the maximum voltage
of any conductor.

33. Chapter 5 in the code is referred to mobile homes.

34. A system which will automatically furnish lighting and/or power to

specified areas and/or equipment when there is a failure of the normal
supply is known as an emergency system.

35. Approved is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.

36. Cooling of electrical equipment within enclosure is covered by the

code.

37. A conductor encased within material of composition or thickness not

recognized by the code is covered conductor.

38. An outlet where one or more receptacles are installed is called a

receptacle outlet.

39. A requirement of service that demands operation for alternate intervals

of (1) load and no load; (2) load and rest; (3) load, no load, and rest is called
intermittent duty.

40. Of the following, _______ is a false statement.

The power factor of a motor is much greater at partial loads than at

full load.

41. A cabinet is an enclosure designed either for surface or flush mounting

and provided with a frame, mat, or trim in which a swinging doors are may
be hung.
42. A light bulb usually contains either a vacuum or gas.

43. The service disconnecting means for each set of service-entrance

conductors shall consist of not more than 6 switches.

44. The resistance of a circuit may vary due to a loose connection.

45. The lubricant used for a motor sleeve bearing would be oil.

46. A hickey is a tool to bend small sizes of rigid conduit.

47. A high spot temperature in a corroded electrical connection is caused by

an increase in the voltage across the connection.

48. Non-ferrous metal enclosure shall not be required to be electrically

continuous.

49. The flexible cord used to connect luminaire may be terminated with
grounding-type attachment plug.

50. Each section, panel, or strip carrying a number of infrared lampholders

shall be considered an appliance.
