INTRODUCTION:
As part of this assignment, I interviewed three professionals working in the construction
field to learn more about the common disputes they encounter on the job and how these are
handled by their teams or organizations. Disagreements and conflicts are often part of
construction work, especially when it comes to project delays, miscommunication, or contract
issues. I wanted to understand what causes these disputes today and how professionals deal with
them in real-life situations.
Each interviewee shared their own experiences based on their role, the type of construction
work they do, and how long they’ve been in the industry. This helped me get different
perspectives on the same issue and learn how experienced engineers and managers manage
conflicts on-site. The insights I gained from this task gave me a better idea of the real challenges
faced in the construction industry and how important teamwork and communication are in
solving them.
ENGINEER’S PROFILE:
1. ENGR. ALYZA JEANE AGUBA ROSALES
PROFESSION: Civil Engineer
POSITION: Site Engineer
CONSTRUCTION FIELD: Civil/Structural Works
YEAR/S OF EXPERIENCE: 1 Year
Interview Question 1: What are the most common causes of construction disputes you are
encountering nowadays?
Engineer Alyza’s Answer: “Poor Communication because based on experience lack of effective
communication among workers can lead to misunderstandings and disputes.”
Interview Question 2: How do you (or your team/ company/ organization) handle these
disputes?
Engineer Alyza’s Answer: “To minimize these disputes, our team handles it by having regular
toolbox meetings and open dialogue with helpers can help prevent this. And also we ensure
regular project meetings with the higher ups to address concerns and potential issues.”
2. ENGR. CLYDE MARLO S. SANTOS
PROFESSION: Civil/Structural Engineer
POSITION: Structural Design Engineer
CONSTRUCTION FIELD: Structural Consultant
YEAR/S OF EXPERIENCE: 7 Years
Interview Question 1: What are the most common causes of construction disputes you are
encountering nowadays?
Interview Question 2: How do you (or your team/ company/ organization) handle these
disputes?
Engineer Clyde’s Answer: “Usually kasi yung iba hindi nagsusubmit ng RFA or RFI kaya ang
nangyayari e nag-implement siya nga mga details na without the approval of the consultants. To
avoid these problems, much better to document all the querries, always consult to the consultants
kasi pansin niyo yung ibang buildings nagcocollapse then during investigation is nagtuturuan.
Also the teamwork is nawawala sa construction. Specially sa mga fresh graduates na nabubully
sa site ganon since fresh grad, no actual experience. So that it’s important to have teamwork and
leadership sa project.”
Usually, some people don’t submit RFAs (Request for Approval) or RFIs (Request for
Information), which leads to the implementation of details without the consultants’ approval. To
avoid these problems, it’s much better to document all queries and always consult with the
consultants. You’ll notice that some buildings collapse, and during investigations, people start
blaming each other. Also, teamwork is often lacking in construction—especially when it comes to
fresh graduates who get bullied on-site because they have no actual experience. That’s why it’s
important to have teamwork and leadership in a project.
3. ENGR. PATRICK M. CARANDANG
PROFESSION: Civil Engineer
POSITION: Engineer 2
CONSTRUCTION FIELD: DPWH Quality Assurance Section
YEAR/S OF EXPERIENCE: 6 Years
Interview Question 1: What are the most common causes of construction disputes you are
encountering nowadays?
According to Engr. Carandang, as relayed by Mr. CJ Ganoria: “The most common
experience was when the foreman has less capacity to read plans. He cant decide sometimes
whether to continue the work or not because he cant interpret the drawings.”
Interview Question 2: How do you (or your team/ company/ organization) handle these
disputes?
According to Engr. Carandang, as relayed by Mr. CJ Ganoria: “We have to understand that
some foreman are new in construction. They don’t have a long experience in the field. First thing
to do is to understand the situation then as an engineer, you should teach him the right thing to do.
If a draft or 3D drawings are needed for him to understand then you should do it. Then he will
learn from you as an engineer.”
