Character Guidelines

Level 20 (You were once powerful—just not powerful enough to rule a Domain.)
Any Official 5e Race/Class (Even monstrous options are allowed—Ravenloft takes all kinds.)
No True Good Alignment (You are a villain, antihero, or deeply flawed individual.)
You Were Trapped in Ravenloft (You are NOT a true Darklord, but you were dangerous enough
to be condemned.)
You Are Cursed (Your past sins manifest as a supernatural punishment.)
The Dark Powers Own You (You cannot escape the Mists on your own, and the Dark Powers can
punish you if you disobey.)

Magic Items & Boons

Magic Items: Each character gets:

 1 Legendary Magic Item

 1 Very Rare Magic Item
 1 Rare Magic Item
 1 Uncommon Magic Item
Up to 2 Common Magic Items (Mostly for flavor.)

Each Player picks one Dark Gift

Essential Questions: "The Mists Are Watching"

Each player must answer:

What terrible thing did you do to end up in Ravenloft?

Did you slaughter an innocent kingdom?

Did you try to cheat death?
Did you betray someone who trusted you?
Did you fail in some grand, awful way?
What is your personal curse? (The Dark Powers are poetic in their punishments.)

A once-great warrior who cannot die, but cannot feel victory.

A betrayer who sees the faces of their victims in every reflection.
A necromancer whose magic now raises only their own fallen allies, forcing them to kill
their friends over and over.

What do the Dark Powers whisper to you at night?

Do they tempt you with freedom?

Do they remind you of your sins?
Do they mock you for thinking you can change?

Why do you actually want out?

Do you want revenge on the living?

Do you regret what you've done?
Do you think you can escape your curse?

What secret have you never told anyone? (One thing no one knows about you—yet.)

You didn’t actually commit the crime you were imprisoned for.
You know who or what really pulls the strings in Ravenloft.
You secretly don’t want to leave.

What will you do if the mission goes sideways?

 Sell out the others?

 Cut and run?
Take the first chance to betray the Dark Powers?
