Making NPC Statblocks

Source: [Link]

This isn't 100% kosher by 5e rules, but here's what I do for normal
everyday NPCs:

Use the Commoner stat block.

Bump 1–2 abilities to 12 or 14 (usually only 1 to 14)
Give them proficiency or expertise in everything related to their
background/profession. This is the not-kosher part, because it's really
just vibes-based.
Optional: (not usually necessary) Slightly tweak any other stat to fit—if
they're really tough, double their HP; if they're a fire genasi
resist/immune to fire damage; etc.

For example:

Human blacksmith, big grizzled dude that most people probably

couldn't take in a fight.
14 Str, 12 Con, everything else is 10
Proficiency in anything "blacksmith-y" or "tough-guy-y"
Expertise in Smiths Tools
8 HP instead of 4. ^(If you want, you can calculate how this works with
hit dice and Con and all that—2d8 hit dice, average is 9, +2 for Con,
so 11 HP—I don't worry about this.)
Maybe since he's a "tough guy", I'd bump his AC up to 13 or 14 as
well.

This seems like a lot, but it goes really fast. I have a small stack of
(roughly index card sized) commoner statblocks in my folder, and it
usually takes about 30 seconds or less to mark some of these changes.
Anything much more than this, I would probably find another NPC
statblock to use as the base instead. I do this occasionally with the Soldier
statblock too.
