Why is good teamwork important?

Stages of group behaviour (Tuckman’s model)


1. Forming – Team members get to know each other.
2. Storming – Conflicts may arise as roles are established.
3. Norming – Team sets rules and builds cooperation.
4. Performing – Team works productively towards goals.
5. Adjourning – Team disbands after completing the task.

How to be a constructive team member


 Follow group rules and procedures.
 Contribute positively and consistently.
 Take responsibility and be accountable.
 Respect others’ ideas and resolve conflict professionally.
 Adapt and communicate effectively.

 Know your strengths (e.g. planning, listening, motivating others).

Key terminology
The following terms are used in the module. Use the following terms often to improve the learner’s
tourism discourse.
Teamwork The combined effort of a group to achieve a common goal efficiently and
effectively.
Team goals Shared objectives that all members of a team work towards together.
Group behaviour How individuals interact, communicate, and function within a team setting.
Stages of group The phases a team goes through as it forms and grows — usually
forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning.
Constructive role A positive and supportive role that helps a team reach its goals, such as
encouraging others or helping resolve conflicts.
Rules and procedures Agreed ways of working that help a team function smoothly and fairly, e.g.
turn-taking, meeting times, and decision-making processes.
Performance evaluation A review of how well a team or individual contributed to achieving goals,
identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
Personality traits Personal characteristics (e.g. introversion, assertiveness, empathy) that
influence how someone behaves in a team.
Strengths Skills or qualities that a person does well and that contribute positively to
the team.
Weaknesses Areas where a person may struggle or need improvement within the team
setting.
Service excellence Providing high-quality service that meets or exceeds customer
expectations.
Industry-related The specific work or business setting relevant to a certain industry, like
environment tourism, hospitality, or retail.
Team participation The level of involvement and contribution a person makes in team
activities.
Profitability The ability of a business to earn more money than it spends — often
improved through effective teamwork and service.
Impact The effect or influence of one’s actions on the team, the business, or
customer satisfaction.
