Perspective Project: Student Self-Assessment

Over the course of the quarter you will be asked to complete self-assessments for every
large drawing project. These self-assessments are a place for you to honestly critically
assess you work and reflect upon what you’ve learned and what you really need and
want to work going forward. They have nothing to do with your grade on the assignment
(in other words, if you give yourself the highest score on all areas, this does not affect
how I score your work), so it’s most useful to be brutally honest with yourself here.

Description of assignment: The larger assignments in this course were designed to be
sequential, each assignment adding elements that advance our skills. For this project we
are once again complicating things to build on the skills we have learned. In this
assignment you will need to combine observation/translation with creativity by
extending a photographic image. Over the course of the stages of this project, which will
span two weeks, you are expected to draw for approximately 15 hours.
Task: Draw a scene that convincingly extends the image you chose and renders
convincing volumetric forms.
The required criteria included:

1. Accurately matching the values

2. Accurately matching the aesthetic
3. Successfully using modelling/shading
4. Successfully employing linear perspective/converging lines
5. Use of size diminution
6. Demonstrated understanding of atmospheric perspective
7. Inclusion of one or two subtle surreal elements

Please assess your achievement on the components of this project listed below by
assigning yourself a score for each based upon this descriptive scale (type a number
after each sentence):

Areas of assessment:
1. I viewed all the video introductions and tutorials carefully, asking questions when I
needed clarification: 3
2. I assess the level of skill my drawing exhibits in terms of:

a. Accurately matching the values: 4

b. Accurately matching the aesthetic: 4
c. Successfully using modelling/shading: 5
d. Successfully employing linear perspective/converging lines: 4
e. Use of size diminution: 4
f. Demonstrated understanding of atmospheric perspective: 3

3. I included one or two subtle surreal elements: 5

4. My drawing is on my large drawing paper and has a border. 5
5. I made my drawing ready for presentation. There are no unwanted lines, smudges,
wrinkles or folds evident on my final drawing: 4
Self-reflection questions (each answer should be at least 3 sentences):

1. What did you “take away” from this assignment? In other words, what did you
learn that you plan to incorporate into your next drawing?

After completing this assignment, I gained a better understanding of how to

extend elements in the correct perspective, making sure that they align naturally
with the original image. Matching colors, shading, and textures was a challenge,
but I improved in blending techniques to create a smooth transition to the best of
my abilities. Expanding the image gave me a chance to use my imagination, add
character and a story to my drawing.
2. If you chose to refine and revise your work after feedback, what was said about
your work that inspired you to do so?

Although I didn’t receive much feedback, I took the opportunity to reflect on my work
and find ways to improve it. I realized that refining the details of the Hollywood sign and
ensuring it blended naturally with the mountain landscape could enhance the overall
realism, so I tried to make it blend with the letters on the picture. I also considered how
lighting, shadows, and perspective could make the scene more engaging.

3. What did you change?

I made the letters blend more naturally with the mountain landscape. I adjusted the
lighting and shadows to improve depth and realism. I also worked on enhancing the
textures of the mountain to make the scene feel more engaging. I focused more on
realistic textures and depth to create a stronger final piece.
