Question 1: What is the NSC?
It is a registered qualification – Level 4 National Qualifications Framework (Rentel et al., 2012).
Question 2: How do I obtain an NSC?
You need to meet all the requirements for Grades 10, 11 and 12. This includes completing the
internal School Based Assessments, and the Grade 12 external assessment.

Question 3: What grade levels do I need in order to get my NSC?
You need at least 40% for one official language as a Home Language, at least 40% in two other
subjects, and at least 30% in three other subjects.

Question 4: Which subjects are compulsory for me to complete in order to receive my NSC?
● Two official languages (one at a Home Language level, and the other either a Home Language
subject or a First Additional Language level). One of these languages must be either Sepedi,
Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, or
isiZulu (which are referred to as the languages of learning and teaching). However, provision
can be made for immigrants or special needs learners (Rentel et al., 2012).
● Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.
● Life Orientation.
● At least three other subjects.

Question 5: If I get an NSC, can I definitely get into university?
Not necessarily. Universities, and other higher education options, have their own specific
admission criteria.

Your Grade 11 results are important
When you send in your admission application form, you also attach your Grade 11 report. This may
give you provisional (temporary) acceptance into an institution of higher education. When you then
register with that institution, you provide them with your Grade 12 results. This means that you need
to really focus on your grades this year!

Various NSC passes
● Higher certificate pass
○ You must achieve at least 40% for your Home Language, 40% for two other subjects, and
30% for the institution’s language of instruction.
● Diploma pass
○ You must achieve at least 40% for your Home Language, 40% for four other subjects
(which excludes LO), and 30% for the tertiary institutions language of instruction (Team
Career Planet, n.d.).
● Bachelor's pass
○ To achieve a Bachelor’s pass, you must achieve at least 40% for your Home Language,
50% for four other subjects (which excludes LO), 30% for the tertiary institutions language
of instruction, and 30% for two other subjects. However, it is important to note that
different university courses will require different pass rates, and so you may not get into a
course based on these minimum requirements.

Once you have obtained your NSC, there are a number of educational options that may become
available to you – depending on your results!
● Higher certificate
● Advanced certificate
● Diploma
● Advanced diploma
● Bachelor's degree

Higher education
After completing an undergraduate qualification, you may progress to postgraduate education. These
are the postgraduate qualifications you can choose from:
● Postgraduate diploma
● Honours degree
● Master's degree (after you finish Honours)
● Doctoral degree (after you finish Master's)

What are ASP?
● Admission Score Points, also called APS (Admission Points Score), is the rating system that
institutions of higher education use in order to assess whether you comply with their
requirements, and whether you can be admitted to their programmes.
● The various institutions (and even specific courses) will use their own ASP, so it is advisable that
you make contact with the admissions office of your higher education institution of preference,
and ask for their specific ASP. These ratings look very much like the UMALUSI rating system.

Report 191 programme
● If you’re interested in the labour market as an apprentice, this programme will benefit you. If
you have an NSC, you should contact the TVET college before you enrol in a Report 191
programme because you might get credit.
Let's have a look at the requirements:
● You will need Mathematics and Engineering Science for all artisan trade-related
apprenticeships.
● You will need Engineering Drawing or Industrial Electronics, or another relevant subject. This
depends on the specific artisan trade requirements.
● You will need a relevant Trade Theory Subject, like Electrical Trade Theory. This depends on the
specific artisan trade requirements.

What is cardio?
Cardio is short for cardiovascular (which relates to the heart and blood vessels). When we talk about cardio, in
the sense of cardiovascular exercises, we basically mean exercises that make your heart beat faster, increase
your breathing, and raise oxygen and blood flow throughout your body. We also call these aerobic or
endurance exercises.
