EATING DISORER

BULIMIA NERVOSA

- You purge but still maintain normal weight


o Eating large amoung + experience a lack of control + purging techniques = normal
weight
o Purging techniques: vommiting, laxatives, fasting, excessive exercise (purge when big
amoungts of food)
o Binge and purging occur atleast once a week for 3 months
- In bulimia nervosa, out-ofcontrol eating episodes, or binges, are followed by self-induced
vomiting, excessive use of laxatives, or other attempts to purge (get rid of) the food.
- Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight
- Does not occur exclusively during episodes of anorexia
- Specify:
o Mild: An average of 1-3 episodes
o Moderate: AVE 4-7 episodes
o Severe: AVE 8-14 episodes
o Extreme: AVE 14 or more episodes
- Question during assessment
o How often do you eat large amount of foods that you think is over your
o How often do you vomit after you feel lost of control
- Binge eating usually occurs in screcy or as inconspicousuly as possible
- Continue until painfully full
- A form of regulation – this means when the person is stress, they eat.
- Vomits brings a sense of relief
- Typically are within the normal weight or overweight range.

ANOREXIA NERVOSA

- Loose weight dangerously (underwight), have a weak muscles


- In anorexia nervosa, the person eats only minimal amounts of food or exercises vigorously to
offset food intake so body weight sometimes drops dangerously. (looks at the body mass index)
o Significsnt low weight + intense fear of gaining weight
o Strong sense of control
o Refuses to acknowledge the severity of one’s body mass.
o Restrictive & Binge-eating/purging (more on restrictives)
 Restrictive (exercise of will power)
 Dieting – not eat
 Avoiding
 Exercise
 Binge-eating/purging type (purge happens even small amount of foods, because
of the fear of gaining weight)
 Vommiting
 Laxitives
o Amenorrhea. Dry skin, brittle hair, sensitivity to cold temperatures, constrant fatigue,
swelling arms and legs, reduced bone mass, increase anxiety.
o Stong internalization of thin body ideal (distortion of thoughts)
o High mortality rate because of starvation- lack of nutrition and suicide
- Question during assessment
o What do you feel if you control yourself?
- Comorbid with OCD
- Strat with bulimia and proceed with anorexia

BINGE-EATING DISORDER

- Individuals may binge repeatedly and find it distressing, but they do not attempt to purge the
food. The chief characteristic of these related disorders is an overwhelming, all-encompassing
drive to be thin.
o Consuming too much + loss of control
o Eating is rapid then bulimia
o Eating stops when one feels uncomfortably full
o Eating despite absense of hunger
o Embarassed by how much food is eaten (often isolate their self)
o Binge eating occurs at least once a week
o No compensatory behavior (different with bulimia because they don’t purge)
o Specify
 Mild 1-3 binge episode perweek
 Moderate 4-7 spisodes per week
 Severe 8-13 spidoes per week
 Extreme 14 or more episodes per week

ANOREXIA- treatment we should recognize that they have the belief as their truth despite the
consequences --------------- Build Trust (explore belief) listen para makuha ang pinakareason. When
you get the trust don’t question the belief.

They have the belief that it is their beauty.
