Of course we want to know what going on inside our bodies when we run, eat,
sleep, play or just do nothing...
To better understand our bodies we need to figure out what it's all made up of

LOOK AT THESE
TECHNIQUES........................................................................................
A leaf is the primary food production site in plants it has many types, layers and
functions......
LET'S START WITH UNDERSTANDING THE PARTS OF THE LEAF
PLANTS CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS MONOCOTYLEDONS OR DICOTYLEDONS. We can
used patterns on the leaves to identify such plants. Dicotyledonous plants may
have simple leaves or compound leaves.
There are FOUR distinct layers
1. upper epidermis
2. Palisade layer
3. Spongy layer
4. Lower epidermis
PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN THE LEAF PRODUCES GLUCOSE WHICH IS STORED AS
STARCH!
CAN WE PROVE IT? SURE!!!
FOR OUR NEXT ACTIVITY WE WOULD BE TESTING THE LEAF FOR STARCH.

Fusion of sex cell -------> zygote------> new plant
The male sex cell is produced in the anther and is called pollen
The female sex cells are produced by the ovary and are called ovules.

`BODY ORGANS AND BODY SYSTEMS
See the source image
THE HUMAN BODY IS A COMPLEX STRUCTURE OF ORGANS COMBINED TO
ENSURE THE HEALTHY AND NORMAL FUNCTIONING OF THE ORGANISM:
The body is made up of cells, some cells are specialised to perform specific
functions. Large Multicellular organisms which are more complex require
different systems to transport nutrients and to maintain the normal functioning
of the organism.
Cells come together to form tissues and a group of tissues working together is
called an organ where organs form specialised systems
Play Video
LET'S START WITH THESE SYSTEMS; NERVOUS SYSTEM, DIGESTIVE SYSTEM,
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM, RESPIRATORY SYSTEM AND SKELETAL STRUCTURE.
EXAMINE THE VIDEO BELOW; COPY CONTENT AND DISCUSS THE

THESE SYSTEMS.....
WHAT'S IN YOUR DIET???

A BALANCED DIET CONSIST OF AMOUNTS OF EACH FOOD GROUP ACQUIRED IN
THE RESPECTIVE PROPORTIONS OVER A PERIOD OF FOUR DAYS.
YOUR DIET IS WHAT YOU EAT AND FOOD IS ANYTHING WE CONSUME THAT IS
NOURISHING TO THE BODY
COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING IN PAIRS- Answer on File page and submit to MR.
Lewis by the end of the class session, BOTH NAMES WRITTEN ON answer sheet
1. Match the following functions by their respective system:
Put the letter of the function next to the system where they occur.
----Digestive system A. removes extra water and waste materials from
our body
----Nervous system B. allows us to move and contains connective
tissue
----Skeletal system C. protects the delicate organs in plants
D. takes air into and removes some waste gases
from our body
----Respiratory system E. breaks down food into substances our body can
use
----Circulatory system F. consist of parts that help move substances to all
organs
G. the control center of our body (5mks)
The removal of carbon dioxide from the blood stream is dependent on the
respiratory and indirectly the circulatory system. List three characteristics of
respiratory surfaces. (3mks)
Blood travelling through the heart is and the body described as double
circulation to remove carbon dioxide and transport oxygen.
Describe the route taken by a red blood cell from the vena cava to the
aorta. (5marks)
4. a) Label as many parts as you can in the diagram below of the digestive
system.
b) Describe, in your own words, the process of digestion within the duodenum
c) What is the main role of the ileum?

TOPICS TO COMPLETE FOR TERM 3
PLEASE VIEW THE FOLLOWING TOPIC OUTLINE AND OBJECTIVES.
BASED ON THE OBJECTIVES DEVELOP CONTENT AND START WITH SELF STUDY
BODY SYSTEMS
Importance of the respective organs in the body systems.
Identify major body systems of the human body
Identify components and organs in the respective systems (labeling parts of the
system AND identifying the function and importance of EACH COMPONENT.
Discuss how they are adapted for their function)
Describe and discuss the importance of various body systems and outline their
functions: Respiratory, Nervous, Digestive, Circulatory
DISEASES
Classifications of diseases
Describe the categories of diseases
Physiological, Pathogenic, Deficiency, Phycological
Examples in various categories
Common diseases and vectors (Group, treatment and control)
Identifying vectors (disease transmitted by vectors) and control of these vectors.
Define and identify vectors
State common vectors and diseases they transmit
General prevention and control – Natural and Artificial Immunity
Describe the steps taken and methods of pest control
Define immunity
Identify the classes of immunity- artificial and natural, passive and active
Describe the various classifications of immunity
Identify diseases that can be treated/ prevented
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM EXPLAINED
DIGESTION IS THE BREAKING DOWN OF INSOLUBLE MATERIAL INTO SMALLER
SOLUBLE MATERIAL WHICH THE BODY USES.
There are two stages to digestion:
1) Physical digestion/Mechanical digestion - think physical action; grinding,
shaping, moving
2) Chemical digestion- think chemicals; enzymes, acids
