Learn GD&T from Basic to Pro

1. Introduction to GD&T

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a symbolic language used on engineering drawings.

It describes the size, form, orientation, and location of features on a part to ensure proper function and

assembly.

It provides clear and precise communication between design, manufacturing, and quality teams.

2. GD&T Symbols Overview

There are 14 standard GD&T symbols categorized into Form, Orientation, Location, and Runout:

- Form: Straightness, Flatness, Circularity, Cylindricity

- Orientation: Perpendicularity, Angularity, Parallelism

- Location: Position, Concentricity, Symmetry

- Runout: Circular Runout, Total Runout

Each symbol controls specific geometric properties.

3. Datums and Feature Control Frames

Datums are reference points, lines, or planes on a part used to establish a coordinate system.

Feature Control Frames (FCFs) describe the tolerance of a feature using GD&T symbols, datums, and

modifiers.

4. Tolerance Modifiers and Material Condition Symbols

Modifiers like MMC (Maximum Material Condition), LMC (Least Material Condition), and RFS (Regardless of

Feature Size)

help describe how tolerances apply under different material conditions. They are critical for functional design.

5. Practical Examples

Example: A shaft with a diameter tolerance and a straightness control.

Drawing callout: Diameter 10.00 ±0.05 with a straightness tolerance

This ensures the shaft is manufactured within size limits and remains straight.

6. Practice Questions

1. What is the purpose of GD&T in mechanical design?

2. Name any 4 form tolerance symbols.

3. What does the position tolerance symbol control?

4. Describe the difference between MMC and LMC.

5. Identify the symbol used for perpendicularity.

6. What is a Datum?

7. Explain how a Feature Control Frame is constructed.

8. What type of tolerance is used to control the roundness of a part?

9. How does GD&T improve manufacturing accuracy?

10. Create a simple example of using GD&T on a rectangular part.
