7. PIPE SUPPORT INDEX ....................................................................................................................................26
1 Purpose
The pipe support system has been designed as follows:
1.1 All supports are fully dimensioned and individually numbered. Thus, the support
may be fabricated by a sub-contractor and shipped to job site ready for installation.
1.2 Two or more standard supports may be combined into a single more complex
support. This facility greatly reduces the number of special pipe support drawings
that have to be produced.
1.3 Maximum use is made of the range of standard pipe support components
commercially available (clamps, U bolts etc.), thus minimizing fabrication costs.
1.4 Material size has been rationalized, minimizing the range of items on the bill of
materials for structural components.
1.5 A facility exists for carrying out a running material take-off (MTO) as the individual
supports are designed. This reduces the delay between design completion and
issue of bill of materials and gives the pipe support fabricator the required material
quantities for each support.
2.5.1 A project specific standard is a special detail drawn for the project that can be used
in various locations in the same manner as the basic standards.
2.5.2 Similar types of project specific standards will be grouped under the same number
similar to the basic standards.
The support reference will be similar to that of the basic standards.
3 General
3.2 All welds are to be (6 mm) leg continuous fillet unless otherwise specified.
3.4 Orientations given on pipe support registers and special support drawings are in
degrees clockwise with reference to north as zero.
4 Materials
4.1 Material required for fabrication and assembly of pipe supports are broadly classified as:
Plate and Bars IS 2062 Gr. B (BS 4360 Gr. 43A) or equal
Bolts, Nuts and Washers IS 1363 Class 4.6 galvanized for bolts up to M12
All bolts, nuts, rods and attachments to be threaded ISO. Metric coarse to IS 4218
(BS 3643)
4.6 Adhesive
5.3 Determine adequate support location based on CSA design drawings/ model.
5.4 For stress critical lines, supports to be planned as per stress mark-up.
5.5 For critical line support selection, check support recommendation for guide/ line stop gap,
anti-friction pad, thermal movement, spring (constant/ variable), valve actuator or any
special arrangement.
5.6 Plan non stress critical line supporting as per support procedure.
5.7 Try to group lines for common supporting; suggest re-routing if required to enable ease of
supporting.
5.8 Select type of support i.e. anchor, guide, rest, line stop.
5.9 Select the adequate support tag from the support handbook based on the loading. For
stress critical lines obtain support loads from Caesar II stress report and for non-critical
lines calculate the support load (loads shall include weight of pipe, valve weight, content
and insulation, hydro test, upset conditions and wind/ seismic loading, if applicable).
5.10 Prepare Civil Pipe Support (CPS) and Special Pipe Support (SPS) sketches as required
.
5.11 For 3D projects physically model supports for space management and clear clashes, if
any.
5.13 Populate the support schedule for fabrication and erection details as per project specific
requirement if any
5.14 Check support span with respect to pipe size, thickness, bends and valve weight.
5.15 Calculate thermal movement of the pipe to ensure shoe length is adequate.
5.16 Check the physical interference of the support and its structure in normal and operating
conditions with valve bolt removal, drip leg, structures, trenches, underground drain, cable
trays, ducts, crane movement, equipment removal area, access ways etc.
5.17 Plan line stops for non-critical lines preferably on anchor bays.
5.18 Decide battery limit supporting philosophy with the stress engineer.
5.20 At support locations where load needs to be taken while allowing for thermal movements,
spring supports shall be specified. Spring supports shall be uniquely tagged.
5.21 Spring supports shall be summarized for procurement through the spring schedule. Spring
schedule shall also be issued to site to assist during erection.
6 Design Basis
6.1.1 All piping shall be adequately supported, guided or anchored to prevent undue
vibrations, deflection/ expansion or loads on connected equipment and piping and
leakage at joints.
6.1.2 Adequate care to be taken to allow expansion of piping to avoid fouling with other pipes
structures, columns, and specified cut outs.
6.1.4 All threaded or equivalent adjustment shall be provided with a suitable locking device.
6.1.5 All components shall be fabricated and erected so that they cannot become
disengaged by movement of the supported piping.
6.1.6 Support points shall be selected to optimize load distribution and weight balance, taking
into consideration available building structures to which supports can be most readily
affixed.
6.1.7 Pipe support shall be located so that temporary supports for hydrostatic testing will not
be required, unless by doing so the flexibility of the system recorded inadequate for the
specified operating condition. All such temporary supports shall be clearly indicated on
the appropriate isometric.
6.1.9 High loads on concrete slab/ floors or steel structures shall be submitted to Civil/
Structural department for design of the secondary support structure/ foundation, when
they exceed the following conditions:
6.1.10 For supports designed by piping, pedestal at elevation 100150 mm to be provided for
supports from grade. However, project specific requirement to be considered.
6.1.11 Pipe support span to be followed as per span chart as per sheet 21 of this
Pipe Support Standard.
▪ Concentrated loading due to valves, flanges, branches etc. must be
taken into consideration while supporting.
▪ Lines on pipe rack/ sleeper, to be provided resting support on every
main grid of pipe rack/ sleeper as a minimum.
6.1.12 One support of control valve stations shall be anchored or cross-guided and other one
end guided. The pipe legs entering and leaving the station must be flexible enough so
as not to exceed allowable stresses in the piping and valves.
6.1.13 Structural attachments to steel shall have enough bearing weld metal to adequately
support the maximum calculated load, including hydrostatic test loading.
6.1.14 Shims used in the field to achieve full bearing between pipe and/ or pipe attachment
and the structural steel and/ or grade pier shall have enough area to carry the load to
the structural component.
6.1.15 After erection, shims must be securely welded to the structural steel to prevent shim
slippage when pipe moves during operation.
• Unless the support is indicated to be welded anchor (fixed) shims shall not be
welded to the pipe or pipe attachment.
• If shims are required to be welded to pipe shoe, then they must extend the full length
and width of the shoe.
• Shims whose width does not exceed the width of the supporting structural beam
shall be welded to the beam only.
6.1.16 Calculated minimum headroom clearance of the lowest projection of any pipe support
component shall be limited to the allowable headroom clearance
6.1.17 Pipe support shall not rest directly on grating, nor shall piping be supported from
ladders, bracings, hand railings or other insulated lines.
6.1.18 Anchors required for expansion joints without hinge pin or gimbal devices shall have
enough capacity to withstand internal pressure thrust plus expansion joint spring force.
6.1.21 Horizontal axial movement of a pipe in excess of 4” (100 mm) calls for a check on
the length of pipe shoe being used. It is imperative that the length of all shoes be
such that the required bearing areas remain on the supporting steel during the full
anticipated movement of the line.
6.1.22 U bolts are to be used up to 150 NPS for guiding uninsulated lines. As far as
possible avoid guiding of horizontal lines by U bolts.
[Link] At point of support subject to horizontal movement, rod type hanger shall
be limited in rod swing to a maximum of 4 deg from the vertical.
[Link] A reasonable effort should be made to have the rod in a vertical position
during normal operating condition. This will require offsetting the clamp
and/ or pipe attachments – this requirement shall be noted clearly on the
piping isometric.
6.1.24 Lines with two phase flow conditions (boiler blow down, any vibration prone lines etc.)
shall be supported on rigid support unless thermal movement dictate otherwise.
6.1.25 Long trunnion type support to be avoided as far as possible and maximum height of
trunnion to be restricted to 500 mm from face to pipe. In case a long trunnion type
support is unavoidable in straight length of pipe; it is to be provided with reinforcement
pad on the pipe, case to case basis. Proper trunnion calculation to be done to check
local stresses.
6.1.26 Supporting of uninsulated and personnel protection insulated lines the following should be
followed:
[Link] Hydrocarbon lines with CS+SS cladding(if any), R. F. pad of CS pipe shall
be used of same thickness of parent pipe.
[Link] For SS lines up to 4” can rest directly on 3mm thick shim plate which is tack
welded to supporting structure.
6.1.27 Reciprocating compressor piping that is prone to vibration shall be designed so that it can
be supported from grade sleepers. The span spacing shall be close so as to minimize the
sympathetic vibrations between the piping and the pulsation of the compressor fluid flow.
As far as possible provide independent supports for piping at higher elevations. Supports
from compressor shed and foundation to be avoided.
6.1.28 Locations where pipes and shoes are not resting on structural steel should be clearly
indicated mentioning the required minimum gap.
6.1.29 Lines that require stress analysis as identified in stress critical line list to be supported in
accordance with the appropriate stress sketch and stress comments.
6.1.30 Pick-up supports i.e. supporting of small diameter pipes by large diameter pipes can be
done if required, with PMC approval.
6.1.31 Guide gap to be 3 mm unless specified otherwise. Special adjustable “zero gap” special
guides/ supports shall be used to protect equipment nozzles where specified in the “stress
comments”.
6.1.33 All relief valve tail pipes and long drain pipes discharging to grade, shall be adequately
guided or otherwise restrained (unless noted otherwise in the “stress comment”).
6.2.1 Following table shall be used for selection of supports unless otherwise specified.
➢ For all PWHT lines clamp shoe is preferred if Load is within allowable limits.
# For SS/ CS/ AS pipe, use welded shoe If horizontal load on support is equal to or
greater than 1000 kg.
6.2.2 Following table shall be used for selecting height of the shoe:
In absence of project specific guidelines, For all insulated lines except personal
protection lines shoe height to be used as follows:
6.2.6 All pipes with personal protection (PP) insulation shall be directly resting on
support structure. Insulation to be cut locally (at least 50 mm on either side of the
support for thermal expansion) as noted in table 6.2.1
6.2.7 Bare pipes, All not traced (NT) small bore pipes with HC or PP insulation shall rest
directly on support as noted in table 6.2.1 if the contact area temperature does not
exceed 120oC on concrete beam supports or 350 oC on structural steel beam
supports, otherwise shoes of enough height shall be provided such that the
contact area temperature does not exceed the above limitations.
6.2.8 At support point for piping requiring cold insulation, 0 0C and below, a molded high-
density polyurethane insert, and steel cradle type support shall provide to protect
the insulation against failure during erection and operation.
6.2.9 Welded trunnions or lugs shall be the same material as the pipe to which they are
welded and shall be welded to the pipe by the piping fabricator unless specified
otherwise.
• Welding shall be in accordance with ASME B31.3
• For stress relieved piping, the attachments shall be welded prior to stress
relieving of pipe.
6.3.2 At point of support subject to vertical movement, spring of suitable design shall be
used so that variation in supporting effect does not exceed permissible percentage
of the calculated piping load through its total vertical travel.
6.3.3 The amount of variation that can be tolerated shall be based on such consideration as
bending effect, control of piping elevation, allowable terminal loading, amount of load transfer
to adjacent supports etc.
6.3.4 The variation in supporting effect shall be generally limited to 25% of the calculated pipe load
through its total vertical movement.
6.3.5 For all systems a greater allowance in percent load change is permissible where the load
variation in supporting effect is transferred directly to a rigid support or terminal connection
specifically designed for the resulting loading conditions.
Calculation for the variation of the support effort shall be based on the following
formula:
(Travel) (Spring Constant) 100
Variation%=
OperatingLoad
6.3.6 Where variable spring hangers are specified, they shall be initially pre-set at the installed
load position (IL) so that the piping system is fully supported during normal operating
conditions.
6.3.7 Constant support hangers shall be substantial construction, with springs and moving parts
suitably covered or protected.
[Link] Load deviation shall not exceed 5% throughout the total travel
range.
6.3.8 All components of spring support shall be capable of adequately supporting piping during
hydrostatic test loading. Hydro test load to be considered 2 times normal load unless
specified otherwise.
6.3.9 Check type/ bottom type spring support to have Teflon pad on top of slide plate of spring for
temperature up to 2000C and graphite bearing for higher temperature.

for
BR9 Expansion Project, IOCL Barauni Refinery
6.3.10 Accurate weight calculation shall be made to determine the supporting force at each spring
support location and the pipe weight loading at each rotating equipment location.
6.3.11 The weight calculation at all spring support location shall include the weight of pipe, fittings,
valves and specialty component, the weight of the medium transported, weight of insulation
used.
6.3.12 Variable springs may be used for any amount of expansion up to the full recommended
working range of the spring if it supports a portion of a pipe riser on which a solid rigid
support is also located.
6.3.13 The total travel for constant supports shall be equal to the actual travel plus 20%. In no
case shall the difference between actual and total travel be less than 1” (25 mm).
6.3.14 Constant and variable springs shall be provided with travel stops.
6.3.15 These stops shall be installed at the factory where the spring shall be pre-set to the
specified installed load (IL).
6.3.16 These stops shall be strong enough to resist the hydrostatic test loading on the unit.
6.3.17 The travel range of each spring selected shall be checked to ensure that any upset
temperature or steam-out condition can be satisfied within the limits of the working range
of the spring.
6.4.1 Sliding base supports with pipe loads, which do not exceed 1000 kg shall rest
directly on pedestals as specified in support standard.
6.4.2 Where anchors and / or stops specified at sleepers or base piers, the calculated
reactions exceeding 1000 kg vertical or 500 kg horizontal points shall be
transmitted to the Civil engineering group. The Civil engineering group shall design
the appropriate foundations to sustain the reactions.
