Study Material: The Life Cycle
What Is a Life Cycle?
A life cycle is the series of stages that a living thing goes through from the beginning
of its life until it dies. All living organisms—plants, animals, insects, and even humans
—go through a life cycle.
Example: Life Cycle of a Frog
Frogs go through metamorphosis, which means they change form during their life.
Egg: Frogs lay many jelly-like eggs in water
Tadpole: A tadpole hatches from the egg. It lives in water, has a tail, and breathes
with gills.
Tadpole with Legs: The tadpole starts to grow back legs, then front legs.
Froglet: The tail shrinks and lungs develop for breathing air.
Adult Frog: The adult frog lives on land and can lay new eggs in water.
Example: Life Cycle of a Butterfly
Butterflies also go through metamorphosis with four main stages:
Egg: The female butterfly lays eggs on leaves.
Larva (Caterpillar): The egg hatches into a caterpillar that eats a lot to grow
Pupa (Chrysalis): The caterpillar forms a hard shell around itself.
Adult Butterfly: A beautiful butterfly emerges from the chrysalis.
Example: Life Cycle of a Plant
Plants have a different kind of life cycle:
Seed: The plant life begins as a seed.
Germination: With water, soil, and sunlight, the seed sprouts roots and a small stem.
Seedling: The young plant starts to grow leaves.
Adult Plant: The mature plant grows flowers and fruits.
Reproduction: The plant makes seeds that start the cycle again.
Key Vocabulary
Life Cycle: The stages an organism goes through from birth to death.
Metamorphosis: A big change in form during an organism’s life.
Germination: When a seed starts to grow.
Reproduction: The process of making new living things.
Summary
All living things have life cycles.
Animals like frogs and butterflies go through metamorphosis.
Plants grow from seeds and produce new seeds.
Life cycles help living things survive and continue their species.
