TIME
The present. Midsummer.
PLACE
Grinville Community Theater.
An old, charming community theater lined with posters of past
shows. The theater is full of memories and history.
Scene 1: Ease on Down the Road
(CAST enters, eager to get to work
preparing for their upcoming show.)

GRACE
Alright everyone. Let’s get moving! We’ve got a big rehearsal
today. Harold, how’s that spotlight looking?

HAROLD
It’s a little temperamental, like me before my morning coffee,
but it’ll shine when it counts.

GRACE
As long as it doesn’t need a nap halfway through. We all know
how you feel about naps.

EMMA
(entering with a stack of costumes)

Grace, I found these old costumes in the back. Thought we

might be able to use them.

GRACE
Perfect! Let’s breathe some new life into these classics.
(sighs. Looks around.) This place has so much history. We
can’t let it go to waste.
TIM
(holding up a prop chicken from the costumes)

Why is there always a rubber chicken in these old costumes?

HAROLD
For the same reason you’re here, Tim. Comic relief.

TIM
Comic relief, or my budding stand-up career? Maybe it’s time I
go solo.
4

(Enter BETTY, the witty and sarcastic costume designer)

BETTY
(Snatching the rubber chicken.)
Give me that, Tim. This chicken’s got more talent than your
stand-up routine.

GRACE
Can you believe it? This show opens tomorrow!

TIM
I can hardly contain my excitement. This is it, our time to
shine!
HAROLD
Shine brighter than my spotlight!

EMMA
And the Emerald City!

GRACE
Do you think we’re ready? What if we forget our lines or trip
on stage?
BETTY
Don’t worry. We’ve rehearsed this a thousand times!

(EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD)

(The lights dim as the cast enters the stage to

rehearse their opening number.)

(THE WIZ ENSEMBLE)

(singing)

COME ON AND EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD.

COME ON, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD.
DON’T YOU CARRY NOTHIN’ THAT MIGHT BE A LOAD;
COME ON, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN, DOWN THE ROAD. (X2)

PICK YOUR LEFT FOOT UP WHEN YOUR RIGHT FOOT’S DOWN;

COME ON, LEGS, KEEP MOVIN’ DON’T YOU LOSE NO GROUND.
YOU JUST KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON THE ROAD THAT YOU CHOOSE;
DON’T YOU GIVE UP WALKIN’ CAUSE YOU GAVE UP SHOES. NO!
5

EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD.

COME ON, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD.
DON’T YOU CARRY NOTHIN’ THAT MIGHT BE A LOAD;
COME ON, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN, DOWN THE ROAD.

‘CAUSE THERE MAY BE TIME WHEN YOU THINK YOU LOST YOUR
MIND;
AND THE STEPS YOU’RE TAKIN’ LEAVE YOU THREE, FOUR STEPS
BEHIND.
BUT THE ROAD YOU’RE WALKIN’ MIGHT BE LONG SOMETIMES,
YOU JUST KEEP ON TRUCKIN’ AND YOU’LL BE JUST FINE, YEAH!

EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD.

COME ON, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD.
DON’T YOU CARRY NOTHIN’ THAT MIGHT BE A LOAD,
COME ON, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN, DOWN THE...

WELL, THERE MAY BE TIMES WHEN YOU WISH YOU WASN’T BORN;
AND YOU WAKE ONE MORNING JUST TO FIND YOUR COURAGE GONE.
BUT JUST KNOW THAT FEELING ONLY LASTS FOR A WHILE,
YOU JUST STICK WITH US AND WE’LL SHOW YOU HOW TO SMILE!

GET ‘EM UP, ON DOWN.

EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN.
GET ‘EM UP, ON DOWN.
EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD. (X3)

COME ON AND EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD.

COME ON, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD.
DON’T YOU CARRY NOTHIN’ THAT MIGHT BE A LOAD;
COME ON, EASE ON DOWN, EASE ON DOWN, DOWN THE ROAD.

Scene 2: Heart

(MAYOR JOHNSON and DEVELOPER SMITH enter)

MAYOR JOHNSON

(clearing his throat)

Attention, everyone!

GRACE

Mayor Johnson, what brings you here?

MAYOR JOHNSON
(somberly)

I’m afraid I have some bad news. The town council has decided
to sell this property. It will be converted into a Dollar
General.

GRACE
(shocked)

You can’t be serious! This theater is a cornerstone of our

community!

TIM

A Dollar General?! There’s one, two, three... four of them

within two miles of here!

DEVELOPER SMITH

I understand your attachment, but progress waits for no one.

This store will provide jobs and convenience... and a wide
variety of discounted toiletry items.

HAROLD
(angrily)

Convenience? This theater provides more than convenience. It

gives us heart, soul, and a place to hide from our spouses.
And trust me, some days that’s priceless.
7

BETTY

Not to mention it’s the only place where it’s acceptable to

wear sequins on a Tuesday.

MAYOR JOHNSON

I’m sorry, but the decision is final.

GRACE

Then we’ll fight. We’ll show you what this theater means to us
and this community.

TIM

And if that doesn’t work, I’ll start throwing rubber chickens.

Or maybe I’ll run for office. Can’t be worse than this guy!

(MAYOR JOHNSON and DEVELOPER SMITH exit. JESSICA, the

melodramatic actress, enters.)

JESSICA

Oh, the tragedy! The drama! I can’t believe it’s come to this!

EMMA

Our theater, our home, being sold off to become some soulless
Dollar General.

HAROLD

But what can we do? We’re just a small theater up against big
money!

GRACE

We may be small, but we’re mighty. This theater means

everything to us, and we can’t let it go without a fight.

JESSICA

Yes! We will save our theater! We must put on a show that will
make them weep tears of joy!
8

(HEART)

DAMN YANKEES ENSEMBLE

(singing)

YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE HEART,

ALL YOU REALLY NEED IS HEART.
WHEN THE ODDS ARE SAYIN’ YOU’LL NEVER WIN,
THAT’S WHEN THE GRIN SHOULD START.

YOU GOTTA HAVE HOPE,

MUSTN’T SIT AROUND AND MOPE.
NOTHIN’S HALF AS BAD AS IT MAY APPEAR,
WAIT’LL NEXT YEAR AND HOPE.

WHEN YOUR LUCK IS BATTIN’ ZERO,

GET YOUR CHIN UP OFF THE FLOOR.
MISTER, YOU CAN BE A HERO,
YOU CAN OPEN ANY DOOR.

THERE’S NOTHIN’ TO IT BUT TO DO IT.

YOU GOTTA HAVE HEART.

MILES AND MILES AND MILES OF HEART.
OH, IT’S FINE TO BE A GENIUS OF COURSE,
BUT KEEP THAT OLD HORSE BEFORE THE CART.

FIRST, YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE HEART!

YOU GOTTA HAVE HEART,
ALL YOU REALLY NEED IS HEART.
WHEN THE ODDS ARE SAYIN’ YOU’LL NEVER WIN,
THAT’S WHEN THE GRIN SHOULD START.

YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE HOPE,

MUSTN’T SIT AROUND AND MOPE.
NOTHIN’S HALF AS BAD AS IT MAY APPEAR,
WAIT’LL NEXT YEAR AND HOPE.

WHEN YOUR LUCK IS BATTIN’ ZERO,

GET YOUR CHIN UP OFF THE FLOOR.
MISTER, YOU CAN BE A HERO,
YOU CAN OPEN ANY DOOR.

THERE’S NOTHIN’ TO IT, BUT TO DO IT.

9

YOU GOTTA HAVE HEART.

MILES AND MILES AND MILES OF HEART.
OH, IT’S FINE TO BE A GENIUS OF COURSE,
BUT KEEP THAT OLD HORSE BEFORE THE CART.

FIRST, YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE HEART!

FIRST, YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE HEART!
10

Scene 3: It’s Possible

(CAST gathers, brainstorming ideas.)

EMMA

We need to do something big. Something that will show the

entire town what we stand to lose.

TIM

How about a magic trick? I can make the developer disappear...

or at least his tax returns.

GRACE

No. We have to put on the best show this town has ever seen.
We’ll make them see the value of this theater.

HAROLD

It’s possible. We just need to believe and put in the work.

And maybe a few more rubber chickens. And an all-expense paid
vacation!

(PAT, the bumbling stagehand, enters.)

PAT
(tripping)

Oops! Sorry! Maybe we should just put me on stage. People love

a good slapstick.

GRACE

Alright, PAT, you’re in charge of comic relief. Just try not

to break anything. Again.

BETTY

Or anyone.
11

HAROLD

Okay. This won’t be easy, but with hard work and

determination, we can make it happen.

EMMA

Yes! We’ll fill these seats and breath new life into our
beloved theater!

(IT’S POSSIBLE)

SEUSSICAL ENSEMBLE

(singing)

THIS MIGHT BE A POOL, LIKE I’VE READ OF IN BOOKS,

CONNECTED TO ONE OF THOSE UNDERGROUND BROOKS!
AN UNDERGROUND RIVER THAT STARTS HERE AND FLOWS
RIGHT UNDER THE BATHTUB! AND THEN, WHO KNOWS?

IT’S POSSIBLE.

IT MIGHT GO ALONG, DOWN WHERE NO ONE CAN SEE,

RIGHT UNDER STATE HIGHWAY TWO-HUNDRED AND THREE!
RIGHT UNDER THE WAGONS! RIGHT UNDER THE TOWS OF MISSUS
UMBROSO, WHO’S HANGING OUT CLOTHES!

IT’S POSSIBLE. ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE. (X2)

THIS MIGHT BE A RIVER, NOW MIGHTN’T IT BE,

CONNECTING MCELLIGOT’S POOL WITH THE SEA!
THEN MAYBE SOME FISH MIGHT BE SWIMMING, SWIMMING TOWARD ME!

OH, THE SEA IS SO FULL OF A NUMBER OF FISH.

IF A FELLOW IS PATIENT, HE MIGHT GET HIS WISH!
AND THAT’S WHY I THINK THAT I’M NOT SUCH A FOOL
WHEN I SIT HERE AND FISH IN MCELLIGOT’S POOL.

IT’S POSSIBLE. ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE. (X3)

12

Scene 4: Hakuna Matata

(THE CAST is rehearsing relentlessly on stage. Some

are tired, but their spirit remains high.)

GRACE

Keep it up, everyone! Remember, this is for the future of our

theater!

EMMA
(to HAROLD)

How are you holding up?

HAROLD

As long as we keep singing, I’ll keep dancing. (pauses) But,

if I fall asleep mid-dance, just nudge me awake. Or better
yet, bring me a double espresso!

(ALICE, the tech-savvy teenager who helps with sound and

lighting, enters.)

ALICE

I’ve rigged the lights to flash Morse code for “Save Our
Theater.” Subtle, yet effective.

GRACE
(laughing)

Good thinking, Alice. Every little bit helps.

EMMA

I know we’ve hit some bumps in the road, but we can’t let that
shake our confidence.

GRACE

This show has the potential to be something truly special.

TIM

But what if the audience doesn’t connect with the performance?

13

HAROLD

What if we’re just not good enough?

GRACE

We just need to trust in ourselves and each other. Don’t

worry!

(HAKUNA MATATA)

LION KING ENSEMBLE

(singing)

HAKUNA MATATA. WHAT A WONDERFUL PHRASE!

HAKUNA MATATA. AIN’T NO PASSING CRAZE.
IT MEANS NO WORRIES, FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAYS.
IT’S OUR PROBLEM FREE PHILOSOPHY.
HAKUNA MATATA! (X5)
14

Scene 5: The Rhythm of Life

ALICE

This is fantastic! We can do this! Can you feel the excitement

building?

JESSICA

I can feel the tingle in my fingers... in my feet!

TIM

We’ve certainly come a long way since Sunday.

(THE RHYTHM OF LIFE)

SWEET CHARITY ENSEMBLE

WHEN I STARTED DOWN THE STREET LAST SUNDAY,

FEELIN’ MIGHTY LOW AND KINDA MEAN,
SUDDENLY A VOICE SAID, “GO FORTH NEIGHBOR!
SPREAD THE PICTURE ON A WIDER SCREEN!”

AND THE VOICE SAID, “NEIGHBOR, THERE’S A MILLION REASONS

WHY YOU SHOULD BE GLAD IN ALL FOUR SEASONS!
HIT THE ROAD, NEIGHBOR, LEAVE YOUR WORRIES AND STRIFE!
SPREAD THE RELIGION OF THE RHYTHM OF LIFE.”

FOR THE RHYTHM OF LIFE IS A POWERFUL BEAT,

PUTS A TINGLE IN YOUR FINGERS AND A TINGLE IN YOUR FEET!
RHYTHM ON THE INSIDE, RHYTHM ON THE STREET,
AND THE RHYTHM OF LIFE IS A POWERFUL BEAT! (X3)

GO AND SPREAD THE GOSPEL IN MILWAUKEE;

TAKE A WALKIE TALKIE TO ROCKY RIDGE!
ALL THE WAY TO CANTON, THEN TO SCRANTON,
EVEN TELL IT UNDER THE MANHATTAN BRIDGE.

YOU WILL MAKE A NEW SENSATION;

HAVE A GROWING CONGREGATION;
BUILD A GLOWING OPERATION HERE BELOW!
15

LIKE A PIED PIPER BLOWING,

LEAD AND KEEP THE MUSIC FLOWING;
KEEP THE RHYTHM GO, GO, GOING;
GO, GO, GO! (X2)

FLIP YOUR WINGS AND FLY UP HIGH!

FLIP YOUR WINGS AND FLY UP HIGH!
FLIP YOUR WINGS AND FLY UP HIGH!
FLY, FLY, FLY UP HIGH!

YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU TRY!

YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU TRY!
YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU TRY!
TRY, TRY, TRY TO FLY!

TO FEEL THE RHYTHM OF LIFE!

TO FEEL THE POWERFUL BEAT!
TO FEEL THE TINGLE IN YOUR FINGERS!
TO FEEL THE TINGLE IN YOUR FEET! (X4)

NEIGHBOR YOU’VE GOT THE RHYTHM OF LIFE,

OF LIFE, OF LIFE, OF LIFE! YEAR! YEAH! YEAH! LIFE!
16

Scene 6: Step in Time

(The theater is packed with community members and
local media. GRACE and the cast are nervously
preparing backstage.)

GRACE
This is it. Show them what we’re made of.

HAROLD
Break a leg, everyone. But not literally. Last time I did that,
I was in a cast for six months. And I still have the medical
bills to prove it!

JESSICA
Tonight, we leave it all on the stage! Our hearts, our souls,
our... dignity.
TIM
Speak for yourself. I lost my dignity years ago.

EMMA
This is it everyone. Our chance to save our theater from the
hands of corporate greed!
TIM
She’s talking about YOU, Dollar General!

JESSICA
And we’re going to do it in style!

GRACE
Let’s give them a show they’ll never forget. It’s time! Step to
it!
17

(STEP IN TIME)

MARY POPPINS ENSEMBLE

(singing)

BRUSH AWAY THE DIRT AND SOOT,

BRUSH AWAY YOUR TEARS.
COBWEBS THAT AREN’T SWEPT AWAY
HAND AROUND FOR YEARS.

WE MAY LOOK A MOTLEY CREW

SMIDGED WITH TAR AND GRIME,
BUT WHEN YOU NEED A HELPING HAND,
WE TRY TO STEP IN, STEP IN JUST IN TIME!

WE WILL STEP IN, STEP IN TIME.

WE WILL STEP IN, STEP IN TIME.
NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME.
WE WILL STEP IN, STEP IN TIME.

OVER THE ROOFTOPS, STEP IN TIME.

OVER THE ROOFTOPS, STEP IN TIME.
NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME.
OVER THE ROOFTOPS, STEP IN TIME.

WATCH YOUR STEP, BUT STEP IN TIME.

WATCH YOUR STEP, BUT STEP IN TIME.
NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME.
WATCH YOUR STEP, BUT STEP IN TIME.

KICK YOUR KNEES UP, STEP IN TIME.

KICK YOUR KNEES UP, STEP IN TIME.
NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME.
KICK YOUR KNEES UP, STEP IN TIME.

CHILDHOOD IS A STEP IN TIME;

PARENTHOOD’S THE SAME.
NEVER MISS A CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT.
DON’T IT SEEM A PERFECT CRIME?
DON’T IT SEEM A SHAME;
WHEN THE STEPS AREN’T GOING AS SMOOTHLY AS THE MIGHT?
18

THAT’S WHEN WE STEP IN, STEP IN TIME.

THAT’S WHEN WE STEP, STEP IN TIME.
NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME.
THAT’S WHEN WE STEP IN, STEP IN TIME!

LINK YOUR ELBOWS, STEP IN TIME.

LINK YOUR ELBOWS, STEP IN TIME.
NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME.
LINK YOUR ELBOWS, STEP IN TIME, IN TIME, IN TIME, IN TIME!

IF YOU NEED US, IF YOU DON’T,

DOESN’T MAKE MUCH ODDS.
WE’LL BE WATCHING OVER YOU,
BRUSHES, BROOMS, AND RODS.

OVER THE ROOFTOPS, STEP IN TIME.

OVER THE ROOFTOPS, STEP IN TIME.
NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME.
OVER THE ROOFTOPS, STEP IN TIME.

STEP IN TIME, STEP IN TIME!

STEP, STEP, STEP!
STEP IN TIME, STEP IN TIME!
STEP, STEP, STEP!

NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME!

NEVER NEED A REASON, NEVER NEED A RHYME!

IF YOU KICK YOUR KNEES UP, KICK YOUR KNEES UP,

KICK YOUR KNEES UP, KICK YOUR KNEES UP,
STEP, STEP, STEP, STEP, STEP, STEP, (X3)
NEVER NEED A REASON IF YOU STEP IN TIME!
19

Scene 7: Dancing Through Life

(After the show, MAYOR JOHNSON and DEVELOPER SMITH stand

before the cast and audience.)

MAYOR JOHNSON

I must admit, that was an incredible performance. It’s clear

this theater is more than just a building.

GRACE
(stepping forward)

It’s our heart and soul.

HAROLD

And our best excuse to avoid mowing the lawn. And let’s be
honest, where else can we get away with jazz hands at our age?

BETTY

Plus, where else can you wear a feather boa without judgment?

MAYOR JOHNSON
(to DEVELOPER SMITH)

I think we’ve seen enough. This theater is clearly

irreplaceable.

DEVELOPER SMITH

I agree. The Dollar General can find another spot. This place
has too much... (sighs) spirit.

(Cheers erupt from the cast and audience.)

TIM

Looks like I don’t have to start my political career. Phew!

PAT

And I’ll keep perfecting my pratfalls. Can’t let down my fans.

20

JESSICA
(with a grand gesture)

To the stage! And beyond!

(DANCING THROUGH LIFE)

FULL CAST

(singing)

DANCING THROUGH LIFE,

SKIMMING THE SURFACE,
GLIDING WHERE TURF IS SMOOTH.
LIFE’S MORE PAINLESS
FOR THE BRAINLESS.
WHY THINK TOO HARD
WHEN IT’S SO SOOTHING

DANCING THROUGH LIFE?

NO NEED TO TOUGH IT
WHEN YOU CAN SLOUGH IT OFF AS I DO.
NOTHING MATTERS, BUT KNOWING NOTHING MATTERS
IT’S JUST LIFE SO KEEP DANCING THROUGH...

DANCING THROUGH LIFE,

SWAYING AND SWEEPING,
AND ALWAYS KEEPING COOL.
LIFE IS FRAUGHTLESS
WHEN YOU’RE THOUGHTLESS.
THOSE WHO DON’T TRY NEVER LOOK FOOLISH...

DANCING THROUGH LIFE...

MINDLESS AND CARELESS,
MAKE SURE YOU’RE WHERE LESS TROUBLE IS RIFE.
WOES ARE FLEETING, BLOWS ARE GLANCING...
WHEN YOU’RE DANCING THROUGH LIFE.

LET’S GO DOWN TO THE OZDUST BALLROOM.

WE’LL MEET THERE LATER TONIGHT.
WE CAN DANCE TILL IT’S LIGHT.
FIND THE PRETTIEST GIRL... GIVE ‘ER A WHIRL RIGHT ON DOWN.

COME ON FOLLOW ME,

YOU’LL BE HAPPY TO BE THERE...
21

DANCING THROUGH LIFE,

DOWN AT THE OZDUST,
IF ONLY BECAUSE DUST IS WHAT WE COME TO...
NOTHING MATTERS BUT KNOWING NOTHING MATTERS,
IT’S JUST LIFE SO KEEP DANCING THROUGH (X2)

GRACE

Thank you, everyone, for believing in this place. Now, let’s

celebrate like only theater people can!

(IT’S BETTER WHEN I’m DANCING)

FULL CAST

(singing)

DON’T THINK ABOUT IT,

JUST MOVE YOUR BODY.
LISTEN TO THE MUSIC,
SING, “OH WAY OH.”

JUST MOVE THOSE LEFT FEET.

GO AHEAD, GET CRAZY.
ANYONE CAN DO IT,
SING, “OH WAY OH.”

SHOW THE WORLD YOU’VE GOT THAT FIRE.

FEEL THE RHYTHM GETTING LOUDER.
SHOW THE ROOM WHAT YOU CAN DO,
PROVE TO THEM YOU’VE GOT THE MOVES.

I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU,

BUT I FEEL BETTER WHEN I’M DANCIN’
YEAH, YEAH.
I’M BETTER WHEN I’M DANCIN’
YEAH, YEAH.

AND WE CAN DO THIS TOGETHER.

I BET YOU FEEL BETTER WHEN YOU’RE DANCIN’
YEAH, YEAH.

WHEN YOU FIN’LY LET GO,

AND YOU SLAY THAT SOLO,
‘CAUSE YOU LISTEN TO THE MUSIC,
SING, “OH WAY OH.”
22

‘CAUSE YOU’RE CONFIDENT, BABE,

AND YOU MAKE YOUR HIPS SWAY.
WE KNEW THAT YOU COULD DO IT,
SING, “OH WAY OH.”

SHOW THE WORLD YOU’VE GOT THAT FIRE,

FEEL THE RHYTHM GETTING LOUDER.
SHOW THE ROOM WHAT YOU CAN DO,
PROVE TO THEM YOU’VE GOT THE MOVES.

I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU,

BUT I FEEL BETTER WHEN I’M DANCIN’
YEAH, YEAH.
I’M BETTER WHEN I’M DANCIN’
YEAH, YEAH.

AND WE CAN DO THIS TOGETHER.

I BET YOU FEEL BETTER WHEN YOU’RE DANCIN’
YEAH, YEAH.
