Wieneke The
Lemure

DESCRIPTION

Intro
A hungry soul finds her way to the Constant.
There she possesses its creatures, to procure
and eat as much food as possible...

Wieneke is a ghost character for DST! She can

possess and control creatures in the Constant,
and uses hunger as a resource for doing so. If
that sounds fun, please give her a try! More
details can be found below.

Stats!

Wieneke is considered a monster:

meaning friendly creatures will attack
her on sight.

Having no legs, she floats wherever she

goes; leasurely avoiding obstacles such
as spider webs. However, she also won't
benefit from helpful ground types, such
as roads.

As she has no physical body, items such

as salves or glands cannot be used to
heal her; instead, she must rely solely
on food to recover her own health.

Like other ghosts, her strength is

sapped during the day, but empowered
during the dusk and at night. She'll also
slowly lose sanity when it's light out,
but be perfectly comfortable in the dark.

To aid in her "survival", Wieneke has

developed a special ability: She's able to
possess any creature, or thing, in the
Constant.

While possessing a creature, she is no

longer negatively affected by the sun.

Controlling creatures is quite taxing.

Performing actions, attacking, or even
running faster during possession will
drain her hunger much more rapidly.

If she gets too hungry during a

possession, she will quite literally fall
out of her host, and won't be able to

Note that some creatures are quite

imposing at first: these

As previously mentioned, Wieneke is a
voracious ghost, especially when
possessing creatures: as such, she has a
huge hunger pool to store energy with.

Anything that's edible, she'll eat with no

second thought: she gets no negative
effects from food, period. That means
you can eat monster meat, mushrooms,
etc. with no penalty.

Some things aren't really meant to be

eaten, but at times sacrifices have to be
made. While she can't use Booster Shots
to recover lost max health, she can eat
them instead, for the same effect.

There's a few more in-depth features

explained in the thread below! Covering topics
such as:
* Sprinting
* Reawakening dead creatures
* A unique craft, the Quelling Candle
* Regarding Lunar/Shadow rifts
* Damage tolerance during possession
* Damage tolerance penalties
* Possessed creature damage
* Possessed creature special actions

Notes, credits, etc.!

Implementing her possessing ability was
a bit of a technical challenge, but she
should work alongside other mods, and
of course the base game. Note that
creatures from other mods may break or
lack balancing when possessed.

I've exposed the methods for adding

host actions/effects in the unlikely event
someone wants to make their
creature/thing have a unique effect
when possessed by Wieneke. It's a bit
complex, so for now I recommend
digging into the mod files and seeing
how I've done mine.

Ideally, I'd like to add a unique

ability/strength for all creatures when
possessed. This has been quite the
project already though, so that likely
won't happen anytime soon. But if time
permits, I may push an update every
now and then, with new powers for
specific creature(s).

She's got a ton of speech lines written:

about ~60% of all the DST quotes are
done so far. The missing/default speech
lines will be slightly "ghostified",
matching her speech pattern: So
hopefully you won't notice the missing
ones, hehe!

She has custom quotes for all

great mod, but some more
configuration would be great. Like
@Abra said, maybe a config to be
able to access the inventory and eat
whilst controlling things.

And maybe the ability to go between
the caves and surface, so you can
bring back certain mobs you want to
use for combat etc.

Would it be possible to let the
creature you possess access your
inventory so you can place things on
the ground? Or that you can pick
stuff up.

Wieneke the Lemure is a ghost character in 'Don't Starve Together' who can possess creatures in the Constant. Her key characteristics include being considered a monster, causing friendly creatures to attack her on sight, and lacking the ability to heal using items like salves or glands due to her ghostly nature. Instead, she must rely on food for health regeneration, benefiting from the absence of negative effects from eating items such as monster meat or mushrooms. Wieneke's gameplay strategy involves managing her huge hunger pool, carefully choosing when to possess creatures to avoid excessive hunger drain. Since she is empowered during dusk and night while weakened in daylight, her strategies are time-dependent. As possession consumes hunger rapidly, strategic use of food and timing of possession are critical. Wieneke’s possession ability provides significant tactical opportunities against enemies but must be managed carefully to prevent her from being forcibly ejected from hosts due to hunger or damage .

Wieneke's possession ability significantly alters combat dynamics in 'Don't Starve Together' by allowing direct control over creatures within the game. This gives her a unique advantage, as she can commandeer stronger enemies to fight against others or use defensively. Her ability to be expelled from a host if the possessed creature takes too much damage adds risk, requiring strategic withdrawals and calculated engagements. Players must be tactical about which creatures to possess based on their current health, capabilities, and the surrounding hostile threats. Her possessing ability introduces a deeper layer of strategic decision-making into combat, demanding adaptability based on available resources and creature characteristics .

Wieneke's ability to possess creatures introduces unique gameplay mechanics in 'Don't Starve Together.' Unlike other characters, Wieneke can control any creature or object in the Constant, providing her with unique interactions and the capability to bypass certain environmental threats. Her possession ability allows her to negate the adverse effects of sunlight, transforming her strategy for resource gathering and combat. However, possession rapidly depletes her hunger, requiring careful management of food resources. This mechanic emphasizes strategic planning, as players must decide when and which creatures to possess to maximize Wieneke's abilities while considering her hunger levels. Additionally, possessing a creature when it takes significant damage can expel Wieneke from the host, demanding cautious gameplay. The ability to possess creatures needing to be defeated first adds a layer of complexity and decision-making when utilizing her full potential .

Hunger as a resource for Wieneke in 'Don't Starve Together' creates dynamic gameplay scenarios by tying her primary ability—possession—to a resource that must be meticulously managed. Unlike purely health-based or cooldown-based abilities, Wieneke's need to sustain her possession states through food consumption demands continuous attention to her hunger levels. As possession drains her hunger extensively, especially when performing actions, players must constantly balance resource gathering with strategic use of her possession capability. Since she requires a broad array of food types without penalization, players have opportunities to develop diverse strategies around foraging and combat to keep her sustained. These decisions add depth to gameplay, requiring forecasting both for planned and spontaneous possession uses to adapt quickly to changing in-game environments .

Creating new abilities or strengths for creatures possessed by Wieneke presents technical challenges due to the diverse range of existing creatures and the need to maintain game balance. Each creature may require specific coding adaptations to accommodate unique interactions, necessitating detailed programming and extensive testing to prevent bugs or exploits. The complexity of coding such interactions can extend development timelines, as it involves integrating these changes smoothly with ongoing updates and modifications. Further, if Wieneke's possession alters creature mechanics significantly, ensuring compatibility across different mods adds another layer of complexity, potentially slowing the developmental process as adaptive strategies need to be devised and continuously updated .

Wieneke's gameplay in 'Don't Starve Together' is significantly affected by the day-night cycle. During the day, Wieneke's ghostly abilities are weakened, as she loses her strength and sanity slowly drains in the light. Conversely, she is empowered during the dusk and at night when her strength increases, and her sanity loss stops. These differences necessitate strategic adjustments by players, who must plan Wieneke's activities based on the time of day. During daylight, avoiding fights and focusing on non-combat activities like resource gathering is advisable. At night or dusk, players can capitalize on her increased abilities for combat or exploration, optimizing her effectiveness and reducing resource consumption. This cyclic strategy ensures maximizing her potential while minimizing risks associated with her vulnerabilities in the light .

Wieneke's gameplay can potentially intersect with other characters' abilities in 'Don't Starve Together', particularly those with compatible or complementary skill sets. For example, interactions with Wendy, who also utilizes a ghost companion, could provide unique strategic combinations. While Wendy's ghost, Abigail, provides direct combat aid, Wieneke’s possession adds flexibility in terms of tactical control over different creatures. Such character synergy can offer innovative strategies, like using possessed creatures to assist in fights originally managed by characters like Wendy. Exploring these intersections between characters can enhance gameplay depth and versatility, encouraging cooperative strategies utilizing Wieneke's distinctive ghostly abilities alongside others .

Wieneke's ability to consume any edible item without negative effects significantly influences resource management in 'Don't Starve Together' by expanding her food options. She can eat items like monster meat and mushrooms, which would usually have detrimental effects on other characters. This flexibility allows players to utilize a broader range of resources more efficiently, particularly in resource-scarce environments. As she can consume a wide variety of foods, players can optimize inventory space and prioritize more versatile items for different uses. This ability reduces the stress associated with food scarcity, allowing players more freedom to engage in activities that otherwise might require interruptions for food sourcing .

Wieneke's inability to benefit from helpful ground types, like roads, in 'Don't Starve Together' affects her movement strategy by nullifying the speed advantage these terrains provide to other characters. This means players must rely more on Wieneke's possession abilities to traverse and navigate the Constant efficiently. Since possessing creatures can allow faster movement, planning her path becomes crucial to maintain her hunger levels while ensuring effective travel. Players need to strategically select which creatures to possess for enhanced mobility, especially in dangerous or resource-dense areas, to compensate for her inability to use roads .

Implementing Wieneke's possession ability in game modifications presents challenges due to the technical complexity of altering creature interactions within 'Don't Starve Together.' This complexity arises because possessing other mod creatures might break existing balance or functionality, requiring bespoke solutions and modifications. As each creature might require unique responses to possession, defining comprehensive and balanced interactions remains challenging. Future updates could address these by providing smoother integration with other mods, potentially introducing new powers or abilities for possessed creatures to maintain gameplay balance and enhance user experience. However, this requires ongoing development resources and community collaboration to ensure stability and comprehensiveness of Wieneke’s capabilities across various mod environments .
