DD2424 - Instructions for the Project Proposal

Before starting the project in earnest we want every group to submit a


proposal which needs to be approved by a TA or me. This is to ensure that
each group has a feasible and sensible plan and there is a match between the
ambition level of the project and the grade the group is aiming to achieve.

Information that should be in a project proposal

The project proposal you submit should be brief and to the point. Its length
should roughly be .5 - 1 page. You should submit one proposal per group.
We just want to know that you are going to explore a feasible and in scope
idea and you have put some thought and planning already into the project.
The proposal should contain the following information:

1) The names of the people in the group.

2) A working title for the project.

3) Whether you will complete a custom, default or default + extension


project.

4) A brief description of the problem that you will work on and how
you will try to solve it. Reference to at least one paper (or webpage)
that provided inspiration as regards the problem statement and/or
proposed approach to tackling the problem. (It is completely fine
if you just want to replicate results of some paper and explore the
influence of parameter settings, training conditions, see if the method
can be transferred to another dataset etc...)

5) The data that you will use for training, validation and testing. (In
most cases this training data should be labelled.)

6) The deep learning software package(s) you will use.

7) How much of the software implementation your group will write and
how much you will rely on open-source implementations. It is not
acceptable though to rely completely on open-source implementations
and just change parameter settings. One goal of the project is to learn
some deep learning package to allow you to set up architectures and
training procedures.

8) The initial set of experiments you will run and your baselines.

9) Which achieved milestones during your project should be attached to


the grades from E to your target grade:

- E grade:
- D-C range:
- B-A range:

Note: We, of course, know that things usually do not go as planned in project
work, for a whole range of reasons, even if you end up doing a good job. Thus if
you do not reach these milestones and/or have to adapt the focus/goals of your
project, you can still make a case in your self-assessment report why you should
achieve a certain grade. Of course this argument will be more compelling if you
write a thorough project report with interesting experiments and results. This
question has mainly been put here to help you plan the steps in your project.

10) Specify for each group member the skills/knowledge w.r.t. deep learn-
ing “theory” and practice they aim to acquire from completing the
project.

11) The grade your project group is aiming for in the range A-E.
