Festivals of India
-Shabana
India is a vast nation with a population of 130 crore residing in 29 different States and 7
Union Territories. Yet, there lies an unbreakable chord that unites the mountain ranges of
the north to the southern plateaus and the arid deserts of the west to the green foliage of the
east. Although each State is unique in its customs, tastes, climate, religion and language,
interestingly people are connected through brotherhood and patriotism- they take pride in
representing themselves as one Nation.
The plethora of festivals celebrated in India bears testimony to the prevalent repartee “Unity
in diversity”. Festivals like Holi, Diwali, Christmas, Eid etc. are celebrated across India with
great pomp and pleasure. These festivals bring people together irrespective of their state,
culture, creed, language etc. and people join together to celebrate wholeheartedly, leaving
behind all differences.
The whole of India come together to decorate their houses with ornamental trees and snow
flakes and smile to the tune of ‘Jingle Bell’ to celebrate Christmas. Holi not only adds colour
to the life of a Hindu but the people of other religions too are resplendent with vibrant
colours. Diwali brings light and happiness in the lives of all- Hindus and Muslims, rich and
poor, alike. A friendly hug or an invite to Iftar promises love and compassion among people.
Regional festivals to mark the end or beginning of a season are also quite popular in India.
Harvest festivals like Bihu, Pongal, Baishakhi etc. emulate local customs and traditions and
thus, holds due importance in the lives of people. These festivals not only help preserve
one’s culture and traditions but also promote mutual respect for others’. Festivals also mean
a wide array of local and exotic delicacies which further promotes sharing and caring among
each other.
To conclude, festivals spread an aura of oneness and togetherness that help people
transcend the narrow prejudices and enjoy unity even in diversity.
