Extract 1

The term communication comes from the Latin word communicare, which means to
make common. When you communicate you create understanding between yourself
and other people. Without communication, it would be impossible for you to relate to
others around you. By using common symbols you are able to interact with other
people and make yourself understood.

Juta and Company Ltd. S., 2008. Communication: A hands-on approach. Cleary.

Extract 2

Written academic communication has become an important element in identity

building, in strengthening peer interaction in scientific research, and in lending
persuasiveness to the dissemination of knowledge. This ties in with another key
concept behind the design of this volume, namely; the existence of international and/or
professional communities whose use of English is essential for the acquisition,
transmission, and dissemination of knowledge and the improvement of practice.

frontiers in learning to write in English. E-JOURNALL, 10(2), pp.1-3.

Extract 3

Generally English for Academic Purposes teachers provide grammar instruction,

vocabulary, sentence structures including the four language-skills (LSRW-listening,
speaking, reading and writing) as well as pronunciation and phonetics; however, they
frequently attempt to tie these to the particular study needs of learners; for instance, a
lesson may be composed highlighting writing essays as opposed to business letters.
