Engineering Mathematics 2 (MTH61304)

Tutorial 1 – Introduction

1. State the order of the ODE. Verify that the given function is a solution ( 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 are
arbitrary constants):

a) 𝑦𝑦 ′′ + 𝜋𝜋 2 𝑦𝑦 = 0, 𝑦𝑦 = a cos 𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋 + 𝑏𝑏 sin 𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋

b) 𝑦𝑦 ′′ + 2𝑦𝑦 ′ + 10𝑦𝑦 = 0, 𝑦𝑦 = 4𝑒𝑒 −𝑥𝑥 sin 3𝑥𝑥

2. Verify that 𝑦𝑦 is a solution of the ODE. Determine from 𝑦𝑦 the particular solution satisfying
the given initial condition.

a) 𝑦𝑦 ′ = 𝑦𝑦 − 𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑒 𝑥𝑥 + 𝑥𝑥 + 1, 𝑦𝑦(0) = 3

𝜋𝜋
b) 𝑦𝑦 ′ = 𝑦𝑦 tan 𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑐𝑐 sec 𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦(0) = 2

Modeling

3. (Falling body) If we drop a stone, we can assume air resistance (“drag”) to be negligible.
Experiments show that under that assumption the acceleration 𝑦𝑦 ′′ = 𝑑𝑑2 𝑦𝑦⁄𝑑𝑑𝑡𝑡 2 of this motion
is constant (equal to the so-called acceleration of gravity g = 9.8 m/sec 2 ). State this as an
ODE for 𝑦𝑦(𝑡𝑡), the distance fallen as a function of time 𝑡𝑡. Solve the ODE to get the familiar
law of free fall; 𝑦𝑦 = g𝑡𝑡 2 /2.

4. (Falling body) If in Prob. 3 the stone starts at 𝑡𝑡 = 0 from initial position 𝑦𝑦0 with initial
g𝑡𝑡 2
velocity 𝑣𝑣 = 𝑣𝑣0 , show that the solution is 𝑦𝑦 = + 𝑣𝑣0 𝑡𝑡 + 𝑦𝑦0. How long does a fall of 100 m
2
take if the body falls from rest?

5. (Airplane take off) If an airplane has a run of 3 km, starts with a speed 6 m/sec, moves
with constant acceleration, and makes the run in 1 min, with what speed does it take off?

6. (Subsonic flight) The efficiency of the engines of subsonic airplanes depends on air
pressure and usually is maximum near about 36000 ft. Find the air pressure 𝑦𝑦(𝑥𝑥) at this
height without calculation. Physical information: The rate of change 𝑦𝑦 ′ (𝑥𝑥) is proportional to
the pressure, and at 18000 ft the pressure has decreased to half its value 𝑦𝑦0 at sea level.
