Compound Microscope Image Verification

The project aims to verify the image formation and magnifying behavior of a compound microscope using two convex lenses. It details the working principle, experimental procedure, observations, and conclusions, confirming that the microscope produces a magnified, inverted, and virtual image. The findings align with theoretical predictions, demonstrating successful verification of the microscope's functionality.

AIM
To verify the image formation and magnifying behavior of a
compound microscope by observing how a small object
appears under different magnifications and lens combinations.

PRINCIPLE OF COMPOUND MICROSCOPE

A compound microscope is an optical device that magnifies
tiny objects using two convex lenses: the objective and the
eyepiece.

- The objective lens forms a real, inverted, and magnified image

of the object.
- This image acts as an object for the eyepiece, which produces
a virtual, erect, and even more magnified final image.

Total Magnification (M):

M = mo × me = (vo / uo) × (1 + D / fe)

Where:
- mo = magnification by objective lens
- me = magnification by eyepiece
- D = least distance of distinct vision (25 cm)
- fe = focal length of eyepiece
WORKING OF COMPOUND MICROSCOPE
1. The object is placed just beyond the focal point of the
objective lens.
2. The objective lens forms a magnified, real, and inverted
image.
3. The eyepiece magnifies this intermediate image to form a
final virtual, erect, and highly magnified image.
4. This is what the observer sees through the microscope.
EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION
PROCEDURE
1. Place a prepared slide (e.g., onion peel) on the stage of the
microscope.

2. Focus using the coarse and fine adjustment knobs.

3. Observe the magnified image through the eyepiece.
4. Switch between different objective lenses (e.g., 10X, 40X)
and note the changes.
5. Observe whether the image is inverted, how clear it is, and
how much magnification increases.
6. Optionally, note the difference when using a different
eyepiece.

OBSERVATION
- The image appears enlarged and inverted under the
microscope.
- Higher objective power gives greater magnification.
- The image gets clearer with fine focusing.
- The final image through the eyepiece is virtual, magnified,
and erect (with respect to the intermediate image).
CONCLUSION
✔ The compound microscope magnifies tiny objects using two
convex lenses.
✔ The image formation matches theoretical predictions: first
real and inverted, then virtual and magnified.
✔ Magnification increases with lens power, confirming the
optical principle of the microscope.
✔ Thus, the image formation and working of a compound
microscope are successfully verified.
