REMOTE CONTROL
1. GENERAL

This HBC--radio remote control system is specially designed to be used on

Sandvik--loaders. It is intended to operate a loader when loading, hauling or dumping rock
material.
A non--interchangeable system address ensures the functional safety of the radio control
system when operating loaders. This feature is particularly important when several
machines are in use in the same mine. The system address is exclusively allocated to
each HBC radio transmitter and its respective receiver.
The transmitter housing with integrated antenna is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic.
The transmitter is powered by rechargeable batteries. Two batteries and a memory
effect--free battery charger are included.

2. UNITS
HBC-- radio remote control system consists of:
D transmitter
D receiver
D accessories
-- two batteries
-- battery charger with different wall plug adapters
-- carrying strap for the transmitter
-- receiver antenna with cable
-- receiver mounting parts

REMOTE CONTROL

2.1. TRANSMITTER
The joysticks and switches are placed on the cover of the transmitter unit. The battery
compartment is below the transmitter. The radio transmitter, the electronic control unit and
the tilt switch are inside the box.
The electronic unit reads the condition of the switches and joysticks and transmits it to the
receiver.
The tilt switch is connected to the emergency circuit, and its function is to stop the loader
if the operator falls.
The transmitter is to be carried with the carrying strap.

2.2. RECEIVER
The receiver consist of ION--key and receiver itself.

REMOTE CONTROL
2.3. BATTERY AND BATTERY CHARGER
The age and ambient temperature are
decisive for the lifetime of battery
applications. Older batteries lose capacity
over time. Temperatures under zero also
have a negative effect on battery charge.
The length of serviceable battery life
depends on how the battery is treated.
When handled properly a battery can
exceed 500 charging cycles. Do not totally
discharge or short--circuit contacts as this
can permanently destroy the battery.
We recommend recharging of the battery
only when it is empty, i.e. when the red
LED blinks or an acoustic signal sounds.
Note! Always store rechargeable
batteries at room temperature
(20 ˚C / 68 ˚F).

2.4. CARRYING STRAP

Operation of the transmitter is allowed only when using the carrying
strap supplied with the transmitter (possibility of mixing up the operator
controls)!

location (i.e. safety bay etc.)

WARNING

Testing of a remote controlled loader (in remote mode) must be carried

out in a place where a malfunction can not endanger other workers or
equipment.
WARNING

3.2.1. TESTING OF THE RADIO REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM

The operation of the remote control unit must be tested at the beginning of each
work shift before the system is used for work. The test has to be done after the
normal loader testing.
Make sure the battery is fully charged, and also take the spare battery with you. Protect
the battery contacts against short circuits. Never store batteries in a tool box or trouser
pockets. A bunch of keys can be enough to short the battery. Always use the protective
cap included.

3.2.2. LOADER IN MANUAL OPERATION MODE

Engine of the loader must be stopped!

Inspect visually that both the receiver and transmitter, as well as the antenna, are
un--damaged.
Check that the rubber covers and seals for the joysticks and switches are intact. If not,
have them replaced before using the remote control unit.

3.2.3. LOADER IN REMOTE CONTROL MODE

Make sure you are at a safe distance from the loader, at least two machine’s lengths away.
Check that the loader is not following the commands from the transmitter before the
transmitter is switched on with the key. You have to move the joysticks within 30 seconds,
otherwise the engine will shut down.
Check the emergency stop function by driving the loader forward or in reverse and then
pressing the emergency stop button. All controls must disengage and the gear must go
into neutral, engine stop, and the machine must stop in one or two meters using the
service and parking brakes. At this stage the loader must not response to any commands
from the transmitter. Start the engine and repeat the test by activating the tilt switch.
Drive the loader and release the driving joystick. The gear must go into neutral, the throttle
into idle and the loader stop by using service brakes in one or two meters.

TKU--B 05100--2 EN 3108 11 (25)

3.3.4. TYPICAL WORK CYCLE

A typical work cycle for a machine in remote control is as follows:

1. The operator drives the machine manually close to the loading point.
2. Machine is switched to remote mode. Parking brake is activated and engine is still
running. No other functions than emergency stop, fire suppression and mode to
manual functions are available in the cabin.
3. Operator comes out of the cabin and takes the transmitter. He moves to a safe
place, far enough from the machine, and switches the transmitter on.
4. Operator releases the parking brake and drives with remote control to the quarry,
fills the bucket and reverses out from the quarry.
5. Operator switches the transmitter off and puts it to the storage place. Parking brake
is set and engine is still running.
6. Operator goes into the cabin and switches the mode to manual. This must be done
inside 30 seconds from switching off the transmitter.
7. Operator drives the machine manually to dump the bucket.

3.3.5. TRANSFERRING TO REMOTE CONTROL

In the driver’s cab

D Check that the gear lever is in neutral.
D Switch the manual / remote switch to the remote position. The engine will continue
to run for approximately 30 seconds to allow time to come out of the cabin, move
to a safe place.
D Switch on the transmitter.
D To disable the ’delay engine stop’ function, move a joystick. If no joystick function
is used inside 30 seconds, the engine will be stopped.
D Ensure that the parking brake button is not activated.
The remote control is now operational.

16 (25) TKU--B 05100--2 EN 3108

REMOTE CONTROL
3.4. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATION

If the engine stops, it can be restarted by remote control. After a longer period of rest,
however, the engine should be started under manual control from the cab.
If you switch off the transmitter power, the receiver suspends all movements. Service and
parking brakes are engaged.
When the red LED illuminates, this indicates that the battery is almost totally discharged.
Now you must replace the battery with a charged one.
If the operator -- intentionally or unintentionally -- switches OFF the transmitter with the
EMERGENCY STOP push button, following steps have to be carried out for further radio
transmission:

1. Switch OFF the transmitter with the key switch

2. Unlock the EMERGENCY STOP pushbutton by turning
3. Switch the transmitter ON again with the key switch

Note! Always use the key switch to switch the transmitter ON or OFF. Do not use the
EMERGENCY STOP push button!

3.4.1. AUTOMATIC SWITCH-- OFF FUNCTION (APO FUNCTION):

For safety reasons we have equipped the transmitter with an automatic switch--OFF (APO
= Automatic Power Off function). The transmitter is automatically put out of circuit after 4
minutes of non--use. The automatic switch--OFF also saves battery power.
Note! The automatic switch--OFF (APO function) does not relieve the operator of his
responsibility to turn OFF the transmitter when not in use! The transmitter can be
reactivated by turning the transmitter off and back on with the key switch.

TKU--B 05100--2 EN 3108 17 (25)

REMOTE CONTROL

3.5. EXCEEDING THE TRANSMITTER’S RANGE

The range of the transmitter depends of the driving area conditions. On surface it can be
several hundred meters. Because of safety reasons, the operator must have visual
contact with the loader all the time when using remote control. If the loader is driven
beyond the transmitter’s range, radio contact is lost and the loader is automatically
stopped. Contact can be re--established by switching the transmitter off and then on again
with the key switch.

3.6. CHARGING THE BATTERY

1. Connect battery charger to mains

(100--240 V, 60/50 Hz) using the
proper wall plug adapter (refer to
nameplate on battery charger for
details).
2. Insert battery with nameplate
facing up into the battery
compartment.

4.7. FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

Lifting the fire suppression button activates the fire suppression system in the loader, and
puts the remote control system in Emergency Stop condition.
The fire suppression system can not be used if the remote control system is in Emergency
Stop--condition.

4.8. START

Same button is used also for transmitter ON function.

Button have to be pressed >3 sec before it runs the starter.

4.9. HORN

4.11. STEERING JOYSTICK
Moving the left--hand joystick forwards Throttle/forward
(away from the operator) causes the
loader to move forward in first gear. Pulling
the joystick backwards (towards the
operator) causes the loader to move
backwards in first gear.
Moving the joystick will release service
brakes and activate the gear in right
Turn left Turn right
direction. It also controls the throttle.
When the joystick is returned to the centre
position, the control relays drop out and
disengage the gears. The service brake Throttle/reverse
will be engaged and the loader stops.
Moving the steering joystick to the right causes the loader to turn to the right, moving the
steering joystick to the left steers the loader to the left. Steering joystick controls also the
throttle. When the joystick is in centre position the steering will stay in the position of that
moment.
Note! If the parking brake button is in the pushed in position (parking brake engaged),
joystick is not functional.

4.12. BUCKET AND BOOM JOYSTICK

The bucket and boom are controlled with Bucket down
the right--hand joystick. Pulling the joystick
towards the operator raises the lip of the
bucket, pushing the joystick away from the
operator lowers the lip of the bucket. In
central position the bucket will stay in the
position it is.
Pushing the joystick to the right raises the Boom down Boom up
boom. Pushing the joystick to the left
lowers the boom. In central position the
boom will stay in the position it is. Both
bucket and boom controls are
Bucket up
proportional.

The bucket and boom joystick also controls the throttle, unless the steering joystick is
being moved.
Note! If the parking brake button is in the pushed in position (parking brake engaged),
joystick is not functional.

5. MAINTENANCE

The radio control system is largely maintenance--free. The following points, however,
should be taken into consideration:
D Ensure that the EMERGENCY STOP push button works smoothly. Contaminants
of any kind can reduce or fully block the button function.
D Inspect the rubber bellows of the operating elements regularly for leak--tightness.
Replace immediately if cracks appear since the penetration of dirt and humidity
may damage the function of the operating elements.
D Charge and discharge transmitters batteries regularly.
D Never use a high--pressure cleaner or steam jet cleaner to “clean” the transmitter.
Use a soft brush or cloth only!
D If any welding is to be carried out on the machine:
-- Switch off the radio control system.
-- Shut down the machine and turn the machine main switch off.
-- Disconnect the receiver connector.

If this is not done, the electronic components of the receiver may be destroyed.
