Main Steps:
Set up EDM
Set horizontal angle
Turn on EDMWindows on laptop
Cable total station
Initialize against another datum
'Wake up' call with prism directly in front of EDM
Ready to go!
Detailed Steps:
Locate datum that you want to set up over
Open tripod
Loosen knobs
Place tripod legs relatively wide
The wider the better, will be more stable than if legs are situated close together
The legs should be placed so that the operator stands between two of the legs
Keeping tripod legs loose, bring the top of the tripod up to just below the collarbone of
the person operating it
Still keeping the tripod legs loose, place the level on the top part of the tripod and move
the legs up/down individually until level
Repeat this process with the level turned perpendicular to original placement
When leveled, tighten the leg knobs

Take out EDM from the case
Screw the EDM [not literally, although I know it’s a nice one] onto the tripod
Should be oriented with the keypad facing the operator, the little rectangular knob
to the right of the keypad, and the data connector insert hole to the left of the
keypad
Also orient directly facing the grid, i.e. the profile
Turn on EDM by pressing circular red button on the right-hand side of the machine
[might have to press pretty hard]
First screen will show Leica logo
Second screen will have something regarding “Hz correlation two weeks ago” and just hit
“ok” or whatever to bypass it [i.e. don’t worry about it]
Third screen will be the leveling triangle which tells you the direction to turn the
respective knobs in order to level the machine
When you get three check marks at each of the corners, press ok to save it
If it does not then automatically take you to the screen where you see the general settings
[on the left side: the battery symbol, the prism symbol, the P in a black box], then choose
the Quick Survey box to get to this screen
At the bottom of the screen, there should be four little black rectangles, the fourth one
will be an arrow, choose this and keep hitting it until you see a black rectangle with
“Hz=0?” on it
Choose this
Make sure the eyepiece of the EDM is level and facing forward
Then choose yes to set the horizontal angle to zero

Setup laptop tripod to elbow height of the operator
Tighten the screw just under the flat top and the larger knob just above the legs
Place laptop on the flat and open, turn on
Choose “Dan Adler” and password is “Lusakert” [is case-sensitive]
Wrap bungee cord around it
Insert the EDM data cable into the EDM but NOT the other end into the laptop yet

On the desktop, click on the shortcut for EDMWin
Should pop up a question asking to remain with Datum Eleven
If beginning on this datum, say yes, otherwise say no
Will next prompt you to cable to the EDM – do not click ok until completing the next:
Only now should you plug in the data cable to the back of the laptop
Remember to have the black softcase under the laptop in order to keep this crappy
little cable in place
Now you can click ok to the “cable the EDM” message
Is successful if the message disappears and all you see is an arrow
If not and you get some sort of error message, call/walkie-talkie me, there are too
many possible options to go into here

At the top of the EDMWin screen, click on Initialize Station
Choose the 2-Point option
Select from the drop-down box the name of the datum you are currently set up over
Yesterday, the datums we used were TRENCH [directly in front of the trench]
and SECOND [to the left of the trench on the little part of the slope that sticks
out], then TEN and ELEVEN all the way to the left of the profile [Eleven will be
the one farthest to the left]
Select the datum to which you will be shooting to [initializing on]
Aim EDM at this datum
Hit the Record Datum square button
Should ask you to confirm your choice, tell it ‘ok’
Then will ask for choice of prism used
After the shot is taken, a box will appear with all sorts of coordinates – all you should
care about is the ones all the way to the right
Any number less than 0.5 is very good and you should then press Accept

Now for the ‘Wake-up Call’
Have someone stand in front of the EDM, probably as far back as the profile and holding
the prism at the level of the EDM
Take an X-shot just to remind the EDM that this is its sole purpose in life

Now you are ready to take shots
At the top of the EDMWin screen, choose Options, then choose Show Data Grid
