I. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Commuting is an essential aspect of modern life, allowing individuals to travel to various
destinations for work, school, or other necessary activities. Public transit remains the primary mode of
transportation for many people, enabling access to locations that are not within walking distance. However,
public transportation systems often present a number of challenges, including long waiting times,
overcrowding, lack of available seating, and complicated payment systems. These challenges are particularly
evident during peak hours when demand for transportation services is high, leading to difficulties in finding
available vehicles and navigating the most efficient routes.

The emergence of ridesharing companies has sought to address some of these problems by offering
more flexible and convenient transportation alternatives. Swift Ride Hub is designed as a private hire car and
motor service platform that aims to streamline the ride-hailing process. By implementing a centralized
database system, Swift Ride Hub will efficiently manage bookings, driver information, and payment
transactions. This will enable real-time tracking of vehicles, allowing passengers to monitor their rides and
receive accurate fare estimates before booking.

The development of a database-driven system for Swift Ride Hub will significantly improve
operational efficiency and user experience. The system will optimize driver allocation, reduce passenger
wait times, and enhance data security for both customers and drivers. By integrating automated processes,
the platform ensures a seamless and reliable commuting experience, addressing the limitations of traditional
public transportation and taxi services.

1.2 Objectives
The aims of the proposed database system for Swift Ride Hub are:

● To develop and execute a database-driven platform that facilitates efficient real-time transportation
booking and scheduling.
● To enhance data precision and retrieval efficiency for all stakeholders.
● To enhance the efficacy of managing driver and customer information, hence ensuring seamless
operations.
● To create a database that consolidates booking, matching, and payment operations for customers and
drivers.
● Enhance client experience by optimizing travel requests and driver allocations, guaranteeing car
availability, and reducing wait times.
● To provide clear fare estimations and itemized breakdowns prior to booking confirmation.
● To enhance operational efficiency via enhanced ride routing and data analysis.
● To incorporate secure and adaptable payment alternatives for customers and drivers.

1.3 Scope and Limitations

The Swift Ride Hub system enhances ride-sharing through real-time booking, driver administration,
secure payments, and the optimization of ride-matching and route efficiency. It facilitates automated fare
computations, data analytics, and customer-driver interactions; nevertheless, it excludes vehicle
maintenance, offline bookings, and driver recruitment. Moreover, the integration of external services may be
restricted, and users bear legal or insurance liabilities. The platform is exclusively dedicated to improving
the ride-hailing experience within these limitations.

II. Review of Related Literature

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The role of technology in transforming transportation and shaping customer perceptions of

ride-hailing services is a significant area of research. Studies have examined the impact of mobile apps,
GPS, and other technologies on user experience and service delivery. (e.g., Shaheen, S., Cohen, A. P., &
Zhai, Z. (2017).
Angkas' emergence as a motorcycle taxi service is a direct response to the specific transportation
challenges of Metro Manila. Its focus on motorcycle transportation allows it to navigate congested roads
more easily than traditional vehicles. News articles and reports (cited as grey literature) can provide valuable
insights into Angkas' business model, its growth, and its impact on the local transportation market. For
example, articles might discuss Angkas' safety training programs and its partnerships with motorcycle
manufacturers. (Mercurio, (2016).
The "habal-habal" phenomenon exemplifies the importance of informal transportation systems in the
Philippines. These systems often operate outside of formal regulations but provide essential mobility for
many people. Research on informal transportation can explore its advantages and disadvantages, including
its role in filling gaps in public transport, its impact on safety and traffic management, and its relationship
with formal transportation systems. For example, studies might investigate the socio-economic profile of
habal-habal drivers and passengers. (Guillen & Ishida, (2004)
The article correctly distinguishes between taxi-hailing apps (GrabTaxi, EasyTaxi), which connect
riders with existing taxi fleets, and personal chauffeur services (Uber, GrabCar), which utilize private
vehicles. Research can delve into the specific advantages and disadvantages of each model, examining how
they cater to different segments of the commuter market. For instance, taxi-hailing apps might be more
appealing to price-sensitive riders, while personal chauffeur services might prioritize comfort and
convenience. (Ba Bahjin, R. N., Esteban, G. E. P., Pamintuan, M. J., & Perez, M. J. (2015).
The rise of ride-hailing applications has fundamentally altered urban transportation paradigms.
Factors contributing to this shift include the widespread adoption of smartphones, increasing urbanization,
evolving consumer preferences for on-demand services, and the desire for more flexible and convenient
transportation options.(Shivers, R., Rahman, M. A., Faruk, M. J. H., Shahriar, H., Cuzzocrea, A., & Clincy,
V. (2023).

4
This study specifically focuses on RHPs due to their dominant position within the broader platform
economy and the transportation platform economy. The substantial valuations of companies like Uber and
Didi Chuxing along with the emergence of other significant players like Lyft, Grab, and numerous smaller
competitors underscore the importance of understanding the dynamics of this industry. (Xiaoqing et al.,
Schleifer, (2019),
The ride-hailing industry has experienced phenomenal growth, fundamentally changing how people
navigate urban environments. Driven by user-friendly smartphone applications, travelers can conveniently
book rides from privately owned vehicles, enjoying benefits such as pre-estimated fares, real-time tracking
of their ride, and simplified reservation management. This surge in popularity can be attributed to several
factors, including increased consumer spending power, a growing preference for on-demand services, and
the emphasis on convenience, affordability, and comfort in modern transportation (Muhamad Rizki & T.
Joewono, 2021).
The ride-hailing industry is an integral part of the broader Mobility as a Service (MaaS) paradigm.
MaaS envisions a future where various transportation modes are seamlessly integrated and streamlined
through a unified digital platform, ultimately enhancing urban mobility and promoting sustainability.
Ride-hailing services represent a crucial element of MaaS, providing on-demand and flexible transportation
solutions that complement other modes. The synergy between ride-hailing and MaaS aims to create a
comprehensive urban mobility ecosystem where users can easily access and utilize a range of transportation
options, from public transit and shared bikes to ride-hailing and car rentals, all within a single platform
(Datson, J, 2016).
Transportation has been a fundamental component of urbanization, facilitating trade and economic
development. The integration of Information Technology (IT) into transportation began in the 1980s, with
advancements like GPS, autonomous vehicles, and electronic systems. The advent of the internet and
subsequent technological advancements have significantly impacted the transportation industry, enhancing
the daily commuting experience and contributing to further urbanization. Digitalized transportation systems
have provided commuters with easy access to information regarding taxis and other transport options, along
with various facilities, both financial and non-financial. This digital transformation has made transportation
more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly. (Balustrade and Stead, (2004).
The expansion of the internet and real-time information sharing have created opportunities for
innovation in the transportation sector. Traditional call taxi services have been replaced by mobile
application-based services, driven by the increasing adoption of internet services and smart devices (Gupta,
Tomar, Thomas, & Rajeev, (2018).
