WORKBENCH
A workbench is a table used by woodworkers to hold workpieces while they are work
upon by other tools. A workbench is a platform where a woodworker performs his various
operations.
WORKBENCH FITTINGS
Workbench fittings are appliances attached to the workbench for holding and supporting
light work on the workbench. They include:
1. Well – It is an open space on the workbench for keeping tools temporarily during
woodwork operations.
2. Bench stop – A small piece of wood mounted on the surface at one end of the
workbench. The workbench prevents the work from moving about while working.
3. Bench hook – Bench hook is used to provide a stop against a piece of wood being
worked upon while cutting, planing or chiseling the piece of wood.
4. Vice – This is a device for holding an object that one is working on firmly.
5. G clamp - A G-clamp is a type of clamp device typically used to hold a wood or metal
workpiece, and often used in, but are not limited to, carpentry and welding.
6. F clamp - An F-clamp is a simple mechanical device used in woodworking or
metalworking to hold work pieces together before they are permanently attached
with glue, adhesive, nails or screws.
7. Sash clamps – These are used to glue up wide panels and large assemblies, not just
for doors and the like but for many more assembly tasks.

WORKBENCH APPLIANCES
These are devices used for sawing and planing purposes in the workshop.

a. Rip saw – It is a larger saw which is used to cut through or along the grain of
wood.
b. Cross cut saw – This is smaller to rip saw and it is used to cut across the grain of
wood.
c. Panel saw – It is a multipurpose saw used to cut along and across the grains of
wood. It can do the work of both rip saw and cross cut saw.
d. Tenon saw – It is used to cut tenon joints and other simple jobs. It is a back saw.
e. Dovetail saw – It is used to cut dovetail joints and other simple joints. It is an
example of back saws.
f. Coping saw – It can be used to cut curves in thin sheets of wood and plywood. It
is an example of curve cutting saw.
g. Bow saw – This is a curve saw used to make a deep cut and circular curves on
sheets of wood.
h. Fret saw – It is also a curve cutting saw used for cutting curves and complex
shapes in veneers and plywood.
i. Keyhole saw – It is used to make holes of various sizes and shapes on wood.

2. The planes are:
a. Jack plane – It is used for roughing out sawn timbers. It can be made of wood or
metal.
b. Trying saw – It is used to make flat and levelled surfaces on marked portions of
the wood.
c. Smoothing plane - It is used after jack plane for smoothing and final
preparation of wood surfaces.
d. Fore plane – It is used for planing rough wood. It is made of metal.
e. Spoke shave – This can be used to remove unfinished wood shaving and for
making curve edges.
