CHAPTER 8

INTRODUCTION TO TRIGONOMETRY

I. In a right triangle, one angle is 90°, the other two angles are less than 90° or acute angles.
The ratios of the sides of a right triangle with respect to these acute angles are called
trigonometric ratios.
There are 6 TRIGONOMETRIC RATIOS:
Opposite 𝑂
1. sine 𝜃 = sin 𝜃 = Hypotenuse = 𝐻

Adjacent 𝐴
2. cosine 𝜃 = cos 𝜃 = Hypotenuse = 𝐻

Opposite 𝑂
3. tangent 𝜃 = tan 𝜃 = Adjacent = 𝐴

Hypotenuse 𝐻
4. cosecant 𝜃 = cosec 𝜃 = =
Opposite 𝑂

Hypotenuse 𝐻
5. secant 𝜃 = sec 𝜃 = =
Adjacent 𝐴

6. cotangent 𝜃 = cot 𝜃 = Opposite = 𝑂

III. QUOTIENT IDNETITIES

IV. TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES

1. sin2 𝜃 + cos 2 𝜃 = 1

2. 1 + tan2 𝜃 = sec2 𝜃

3. 1 + cot 2 𝜃 = cosec 2 𝜃
