Explain the term social stratification. In your essay discuss how race and ethnicity plays a
role in stratification. Draw on examples in the South African context to support your
arguments.

INTRODUCTION (8 – 10 lines)

Introduce your understanding of the topic

What is the main aim/ purpose of the essay?

How is your essay structured/ organised?

BODY OF THE ESSAY (write in paragraphs, 10 – 15 lines for each paragraph)

Here is where you examine the essay question and address the questions that are being posed
in the essay question.

 Discuss the concept social stratification.

Social stratification refers to a society's categorization of its people into groups based on
socioeconomic factors like wealth, income, race, education, ethnicity, gender, occupation,
social status, or derived power.

Make use of the theorists – For example: Draw on Max Weber argument - Weber maintained
that stratification is an organized manifestation of power in society. Power, for Weber, can be
separated into three spheres of activity for analytical purposes: economic, social, and
political, and, within each sphere power is designated according to class, status, and power.
Elaborate further.

 Discuss how race or ethnicity plays a role in stratification.

Explain the concept Race and Ethnicity

Discuss how inequalities are perpetuated through race and ethnicity. You can also draw on
the arguments from the South African context. Elaborate further. Refer to the reading on the
module page and draw on other sources.

Apartheid vs Pre – Apartheid South Africa

How does inequality disadvantage people? How do you place yourself in South African
society?
READ, READ, And READ!!! Look at the textbook or other readings to
support your arguments. Now summarise or paraphrase these in your essay but cite where
you found the material/ text.

No new ideas to be brought into the conclusion.
Reflect on what was written in the body of the essay by giving the essay a stand.
The best way to conclude is reflecting on what has been written in the body of the essay, do
not repeat yourself.

Use a minimum of 3 references
Harvard Method of referencing.
Reference in alphabetical order.
Ensure that references that are used in the body of the essay should also be reflected in full in
the Bibliography / Reference Page.

PRESENTATION
The writing style should be consistent.
The writing style must be lucid and consistent.
Check your spelling and grammar.
References: complete and consistent.
Layout of the assignment should helpful to the reader.
