Visual Art reflection
Throughout this term, we’ve had multiple different units, and each of these units has helped me
develop new skills in new areas, such as shading and blending colors using oil pastels. In this current unit, I
got to explore how simple items can have significant meaning, display a story, and change the perspective of
how you view the object. During this unit, I had to change my mindset to think more creatively, so that the
piece I developed would alter people's perspective on the object. While exploring and researching my object,
which was a gun, I realized that the object would have multiple symbolic meanings, but what mattered the
most was how you interpret it. I got to experiment with oil pastel a little, which was stressful at first because
I couldn't figure out how to blend the colors, but once I did, I realized that there are different ways to do it,
and each of these could help tell a story in an impactful way. While interpreting the object, one of the
challenges I faced was conveying both of its symbolic meanings, as it can represent both protection and
violence. It was difficult to balance these opposing interpretations without leaning too heavily towards one
side. Additionally, capturing the complexity of emotions and societal issues related to the object required
careful thought and consideration in my artistic choices. One of the pieces that I created was painted with
acrylic paint during the process of creating it. As we learned how to use it more efficiently and blend colors
more effectively last term, I made a mistake in creating that piece, and I was not sure how to fix it, so I didn't
know what to do about it. As a result of this, I had the idea of drawing spirals over the work and interpret it
as the wielder of the gun spiralling over the piece. The spirals in my piece are a symbol of the chaotic and
uncontrollable nature of violence, so I think that using that approach helped me convey a deeper message in
my piece.
I think this term i have grown significantly as an artist and have developed a deeper
understanding of creating artworks. I've been experimenting with new techniques and styles,
which has helped me refine my skills and broaden my creative perspective. This growth has also
boosted my confidence and motivation to continue exploring and improving. Though during this
summer i will continue to experiment with different mediums and artstyles to further enhance
my art skills and improve my creative expression.
