Digestive System - Detailed but Easy Notes
1. Parts of the Digestive System
Mouth: Ingestion, mechanical digestion (chewing), saliva moistens food
Teeth: Break food into smaller pieces (mastication)
Salivary glands: Secrete saliva (contains enzyme salivary amylase for starch digestion)
Pharynx: Connects mouth to esophagus; passageway for food and air
Esophagus: Muscular tube; pushes food to stomach by peristalsis
Stomach: Churns food, secretes HCl (kills microbes), pepsin begins protein digestion
Small Intestine:
- Duodenum: Receives bile and pancreatic juice
- Jejunum: Absorbs nutrients
- Ileum: Absorbs remaining nutrients
Large Intestine:
- Colon: Absorbs water, minerals
- Rectum: Stores feces
Anus: Egestion (removal of undigested food)
2. Digestive Glands
Salivary glands: Saliva (amylase) - Starch -> Maltose
Gastric glands: HCl, pepsinogen, mucus - Protein digestion begins
Liver: Bile - Emulsifies fats, neutralizes acid
Pancreas: Pancreatic juice (amylase, trypsin, lipase) - Digests all types of food
Intestinal glands: Succus entericus - Completes digestion
3. Digestive Enzymes and Actions
Salivary amylase: From saliva - Acts on starch - Converts to maltose
Pepsin: From stomach - Acts on proteins - Converts to peptides
Trypsin: From pancreas - Acts on proteins - Converts to peptides
Lipase: From pancreas - Acts on fats - Converts to fatty acids + glycerol
Amylase (Pancreatic): From pancreas - Acts on starch - Converts to maltose
Maltase: From intestine - Acts on maltose - Converts to glucose
Peptidase: From intestine - Acts on peptides - Converts to amino acids
Digestive System - Detailed but Easy Notes
4. Absorption of Nutrients
Glucose, amino acids: Absorbed in small intestine (villi)
Fatty acids: Absorbed via lymph (lacteals in villi)
Water, minerals: Absorbed in large intestine
5. Mnemonic Tips
SALIVA -> Starch
PEPSIN -> Protein
LIPASE -> Lipids (fats)
BILE -> Breaks down fat (emulsifies)
PANCREAS -> Produces all 3: amylase, trypsin, lipase
