a) A beam ABCDE is continuous over four supports and carries the loads shown in figure given
below. Determine the values of the fixing moments at each support.

b) Derive the differential equation of deflection curve.


c) A close coiled helical spring is fixed at one end and subjected to axial twist at the
other. When the spring is in use the axial torque varies from 0.75 N-m to 3 N-m, the
working angular deflection between these torques being 350. The spring is to be made
from rod of circular section, the maximum permissible stress being 150 MN/m2. The
mean diameter of the coils is eight times the rod diameter. Calculate the mean coil
diameter, the number of turns and the wire diameter.

d) The load to be carried by a lift may be dropped 10 cm on to the floor. The cage itself
weighs 100 kg and is supported by 25 m of wire rope weighing 0.9 kg/m, consisting
of 49 wires each 1.6 mm diameter. The maximum stress in the wire is limited to 90
N/mm2 and E for the rope is 70000 N/mm2. Find the maximum load which can be
carried.
e) A timber beam 6 cm wide and 8 cm deep is to be reinforced by bolting on two steel
flitches, each 6 cm by 5 mm in section in the following cases:
i. flitches attached symmetrically at top and bottom:
ii. flitches attached symmetrically at the sides
Take allowable timber stress as 8 N/mm2. What is the maximum stress in the steel in

(a) A solid circular shaft of length 3 m and diameter of 50 mm rotates at 1200
rpm by a 400 HP electric motor at its middle. It derives two machines of 150
HP and 250 HP at left and right ends of the shaft, respectively. Determine the
maximum shear stress and relative displacement of the two ends of the shaft.

(b) Determine the deflection of the beam at midpoint for the beam loading
system shown in the figure given below.
Take: E = 200 GN/m2 and I = 83 x 106 m4.

(b) Derive the relation to find deflection induced in the open coiled helical spring
subjected to axial Torque.

(a) The cylinder for a hydraulic press has an inside diameter of 300 mm.
Determine the wall thickness required if the cylinder is to withstand an internal
pressure of 60 MPa without exceeding a shearing stress of 90 MPa.
(b) In an experiment on a thick cylinder of 100 mm external diameter and 50 mm
internal diameter the hoop and longitudinal strains as measured by strain
gauges applied to the outer surface of the cylinder were 240 x 10-6 and 60 x 10-6
respectively, for an internal pressure of 90 MN/m2, the external pressure being
zero.
Determine the actual hoop and longitudinal stresses present in the
cylinder if E = 208 GN/m2 and v = 0.29. Compare the hoop stress value so
obtained with the theoretical value given by the Lame equations.

(a) A 75 mm x 75 mm x 12 mm angle is used as a cantilever with the face AB
horizontal as shown in figure. A vertical load of 3 KN is applied at the tip of
the cantilever which is 1 m long. Determine the stresses at A, B and C.

(b) The bending moment acting on the curved beam with a rectangular cross-
section is M = 8 KN-m. Calculate the bending stress at point B.

(a) A compound cylinder is to be made by shrinking one tube on to another so that

a. A timber beam, 100 mm wide by 200 mm, deep is reinforced by bolting on two steel plates each
10 mm thick one on either side of the beam. Find the maximum stress attained in the steel and
the moment of resistance of the section if
i. The plates are 200 mm deep (figure- a)
ii. The plates are 160 mm deep and are symmetrically placed(figure- b)
The maximum stress in the timber is to be 8 MPa and the Young’s modulus of steel is 20 times
that of timber.

b. Establish the governing differential equation of beams. What are its limitations?

a. A closed-coiled helical spring having 24 turns is made of 8-mm diameter wire. The mean
diameter of the spring is 80 mm, and it carries a load of 250 N. determine the shear stress
developed, the deflection and the stiffness of the spring. Take G= 84 GPa.
b. Using Euler’s formula, determine the critical stresses for a strut of slenderness ratio 80, 120,
160 and 200 under the condition of
(i) Both ends hinged
(ii) Both ends fixed

a. Deduce the general equations for circumferential and radial stresses developed in thick
cylinders. What are the assumptions made?
b. A steel tube of 120-mm external diameter is shrunk on another steel tube of 48-mm internal
diameter. After shrinking, the diameter at the junction is 80 mm. Initial difference of diameters
at the junction before shrinking was 0.04 mm. Determine:
(i) Radial pressure at the junction
(ii) Hoop stress developed in the two tubes after the shrinking.

a. Define Poisson’s ratio.
b. A wooden tie is 7.5 cm wide, 15 cm deep and 1.5 m long. It is subjected to an
axial pull of 4500 kg. The stretch of the member is found to be 0.0638 cm. Find
the value of Young’s Modulus for the tie material.
c. Define section modulus.
d. What do you mean by slenderness ratio?
e. In case of a seamless shell write the formula for change in volume, change in length
and change in diameter.
f. A simply supported beam of span L is carrying a uniformly distributed load of W per
unit run over the whole span. The maximum deflection in this case is given as.
g. What is Shear center?

SECTION B

2. Attempt any three of the following: 7 x 3 = 21


a. A shaft is subjected to a maximum torque of 10 kNm and a maximum bending
moment of 7.5 KNm at a particular section. If the allowable equivalent stress in simple
tension is 160 MN/m2, find the diameter of the shaft according to the maximum shear
stress theory.
b. From the first principles derive the expression for the critical buckling for a column
having both the end fixed.
c. A steel girder of uniform section, 14 meter long is simply supported at its ends. It
carries concentrated load of 90 KN and 60 KN at two points 3 m and 4.5 m from the
two ends respectively. Calculate the deflection under the two loads and maximum
deflection. I=64 x 10-4 m4, E= 210 x 10-6 KN/m2.
d. Derive Lame’s equation for thick cylinder, when internal pressure is P 1 and external
pressure is zero.
e. Determine the position of neutral axis, and maximum and minimum stresses
when a curved beam of circular section of diameter 100 mm is subjected to
pure bending moment of + 11.5 KNm. The radius of curvature is 100 mm.

(a) A point in a strained material is subjected to stress as shown in fig.1. Locate the
principal plane and evaluate the principal stress.

(b) Discuss theories of failure in detail.

(a) Find the internal and external diameters required for a hollow shaft, which is to
transmit 40 kW of power at 240 rpm. The shear stress is to be limited to 100 MN/m2.
Take outside diameter to be twice the inside diameter.
(b) A timber beam 10 cm wide and 15 cm deep supports a uniformly distributed load
over a span of 2 meters. If the safe stresses are 280 kg/cm 2 longitudinally and 20
kg/cm2 in transverse shear, calculate the maximum load which can be supported by
the beam.

(a) A closely coiled helical spring is to carry a load of 500 N. Its mean coil
diameter is to be 10 times that of wire diameter. Calculate the mean diameter if
the maximum shear stress in the material of the spring is to be 80 MPa. If the
stiffness of the spring is 20 N per mm deflection and modulus of rigidity is
86000 MPa. Find the number of coils in the closely coiled helical spring.
(b) Explain the middle third rule for rectangular section. Also write the limitation of
Euler’s formula for critical load.

6. Attempt any one part of the following: 7x1=7


(a) Determine the maximum and minimum hoop stress across the section of a pipe
of 400 mm internal diameter and 100 mm thick, when a pipe contains a fluid at
a pressure of 8 N/mm2. Also sketch the radial pressure distribution and hoop
stress distribution across the section.
(b) A boiler drum consists of a cylindrical portion 4 m long, 1.5 m in diameter and 2.25
thick. It is closed by hemispherical ends. In a hydraulic test to 6 MN/m2, how much
additional water will be pimped in after initial filling at atmospheric pressure? The
circumferential strain at the junction of the cylinder and hemisphere may be assumed
as same for both.
