Reproductive System - Page 1
I. Overview:
The reproductive system enables the production of offspring through gamete formation, fertilization,
and support of fetal development. It includes primary and secondary sexual organs.
II. Male Reproductive System:
A. Primary Organs:
- Testes: Produce sperm and testosterone
B. Duct System:
- Epididymis: Stores and matures sperm
- Vas deferens: Transports sperm to ejaculatory duct
- Ejaculatory duct: Connects vas deferens to urethra
- Urethra: Common passageway for urine and semen
C. Accessory Glands:
- Seminal Vesicles: Produce alkaline fluid with fructose
- Prostate Gland: Secretes fluid that enhances sperm motility
- Bulbourethral Glands: Secrete mucus for lubrication
D. External Genitalia:
- Penis: Organ for copulation and urination
- Scrotum: Regulates temperature for optimal spermatogenesis
III. Hormonal Regulation (Male):
- Hypothalamus -> GnRH -> Pituitary -> LH and FSH
- LH stimulates Leydig cells (testosterone); FSH stimulates Sertoli cells (spermatogenesis)

IV. Female Reproductive System:
A. Primary Organs:
- Ovaries: Produce oocytes and secrete estrogen and progesterone
B. Duct System:
- Fallopian Tubes: Transport oocyte to uterus; site of fertilization
- Uterus: Muscular organ where implantation and fetal development occur
- Cervix: Lower part of uterus; opens into the vagina
- Vagina: Birth canal and site for sperm deposition
C. External Genitalia (Vulva):
- Includes labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, and vestibular glands
V. Hormonal Regulation (Female):
- Hypothalamus -> GnRH -> Pituitary -> LH and FSH
- FSH promotes follicle development; LH triggers ovulation
- Estrogen and progesterone regulate the menstrual cycle and pregnancy
VI. Menstrual Cycle:
1. Follicular Phase (Day 1-14): FSH stimulates follicle growth, estrogen rises
2. Ovulation (Day 14): Surge in LH causes release of ovum
3. Luteal Phase (Day 15-28): Corpus luteum secretes progesterone
4. Menstruation: Shedding of uterine lining if no fertilization occurs

VII. Fertilization and Pregnancy:
- Fertilization usually occurs in the ampulla of the fallopian tube
- Zygote -> Morula -> Blastocyst -> Implantation in the uterus
- Placenta forms to exchange nutrients, gases, and wastes
- hCG maintains corpus luteum in early pregnancy
VIII. Pregnancy and Parturition:
- Pregnancy lasts ~40 weeks
- Hormones: hCG, progesterone, estrogen, relaxin, prolactin
- Labor: Initiated by oxytocin and prostaglandins
- Three stages: Dilation, Expulsion, Placental
IX. Lactation:
- Prolactin stimulates milk production
- Oxytocin causes milk ejection (let-down reflex)
X. Clinical Correlations:
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Hormonal imbalance affecting ovulation
- Erectile Dysfunction: Impaired blood flow or neural signaling
- Infertility: Can result from hormonal, structural, or genetic causes
- Contraception: Barrier, hormonal, intrauterine, or surgical methods
- STIs: Affect reproductive and overall health (e.g., HPV, chlamydia)
The reproductive system is essential for species propagation and is tightly regulated by complex
hormonal and anatomical interactions.
