Credit system and grading

The academic year normally runs from mid-August to mid-June and lasts for 10 months. Courses are measured in
“studiepoeng”, considered equivalent to the European Credit Transfer System standard (ECTS credits). The full-time
workload for one academic year is 1500 - 1800 hours of study / 60 "studiepoeng".
The Norwegian grading system consists of two grading scales: one scale with the grades pass or fail and one
graded scale from A to E for pass and F for fail. The graded scale has the following qualitative descriptions:

A Excellent An excellent performance, clearly outstanding. The candidate demonstrates excellent

judgement and a very high degree of independent thinking.
B Very good A very good performance. The candidate demonstrates sound judgement and a high
degree of independent thinking.
C Good A good performance in most areas. The candidate demonstrates a reasonable degree of
judgement and independent thinking in the most important areas.
D Satisfactory A satisfactory performance, but with significant shortcomings. The candidate
demonstrates a limited degree of judgement and independent thinking.
E Sufficient A performance that meets the minimum criteria, but no more. The candidate
demonstrates a very limited degree of judgement and independent thinking.
F Fail A performance that does not meet the minimum academic criteria. The candidate
demonstrates an absence of both judgement and independent thinking.
The assessment is criterion referenced.

Grade distribution

The distribution of grades is shown by the percentage for courses using the graded scale A – F. Fail (F) is not
included in the distribution. All results from the last five years are included in the calculation. The distribution is
also shown for courses that have been active for less than five years. There has to be at least 10 approved results
during the period.

The Marine- and Offshore Technology Master's programme consists of 120 ECTS credits. It includes 35 ECTS basic methods subjects that consolidate mathematical and scientific foundations, 45 ECTS core subjects and specialization subjects that provide knowledge in marine and offshore technology, 10 ECTS elective subjects, and a 30 ECTS thesis . These components contribute to the learning outcomes by equipping students with advanced knowledge and skills in mechanical and structural engineering, ability to analyze safety and environmental aspects, and competence in independent research and development projects .

The thesis, accounting for 30 ECTS, is pivotal in fostering research skills. It requires students to conduct independent research or development projects under supervision, applying their theoretical knowledge to practical issues while adhering to ethical norms . This encourages critical analysis, effective synthesis of information, and formulation of scholarly arguments, essential for professional advancement .

The Norwegian grading system has a qualitative scale from A to F, with grades reflecting levels of independent thinking and judgment. 'A' denotes an excellent performance with high independence, while 'F' indicates a lack of these qualities . This system encourages independent thought by clearly highlighting its importance in achieving higher grades. However, the reliance on such qualitative descriptors could potentially hinder students who may struggle with subjective assessment criteria .

The programme recommends a semester abroad during the third semester, which includes 25 ECTS specialization courses and 5 ECTS elective courses. This international experience can be substituted with approved alternative courses . Benefits for students include exposure to diverse academic environments, cross-cultural collaboration skills, and potentially broader professional opportunities globally, such as in marine, offshore, and subsea industries .

Understanding safety and environmental aspects is crucial as marine and offshore operations involve significant risks and environmental impacts. The programme ensures candidates can implement this knowledge in developing technical solutions suitable for societal needs, promoting sustainability, and safeguarding human and environmental health .

The programme emphasizes the candidate's knowledge about ethical aspects in engineering, including safety, environmental considerations, and implementing ethical solutions in professional work . These considerations are significant as they guide engineers to develop technologies that are beneficial and sustainable, uphold industry standards, and safeguard societal and individual welfare .

The programme prepares graduates for innovation by equipping them with skills to analyze and apply existing theories independently, engage in new technology development, and communicate effectively with specialists and laypersons alike. These skills enable graduates to contribute to new thinking and innovation processes in marine, offshore, and subsea industries .

The programme employs lectures, project assignments, exercises, and laboratory work to help students synthesize knowledge from mechanical and structural engineering into marine and offshore technology . This methodology ensures students can integrate diverse academic concepts, leading to a comprehensive understanding of the systems and operations involved in their field .

Elective courses, comprising 10 ECTS, allow students to customize their learning based on personal interests and career goals. They complement core and specialization courses by providing opportunities to explore new areas and accommodate interests beyond the mandatory curriculum, thereby broadening scholarly perspectives and enhancing flexibility in career paths .

The programme aligns with international standards by offering education at Level 7 of the Norwegian Qualifications Framework, complying with ECTS credit standards, and providing opportunities for international experience . This alignment is important as it ensures the education quality is globally recognized, facilitates student mobility, and enhances employability in international markets .
