CIV 2201 SOIL MECHANICS- TUTORIAL SET 10 (SEMESTER 2- 2024/2025)
Issue date: 8th April 2025 (Week `12 of the semester)
Instructions and guidance:
The tutorials contribute no points to the final grade of the course but are important in
understanding the material presented in the lectures
The tutorials should preferably be attempted in your study groups
Question one
The following readings were obtained after conducting an oedometer test on a clay sample that
was fully saturated.
Pressure (kN/m2) Void ratio after 24 h
0 0.89
54 0.87
108 0.84
216 0.80
432 0.74
864 0.65
1728 0.56
3456 0.47
0 0.54
a) Plot the void ratio versus log pressure curve (Also Plot void ratio versus pressure curve
and compare the two graphs). Use both manual plotting and MS Excel or any other
computer tool.
b) Use the graph in a) to determine the following:
i. Preconsolidation pressure
ii. Coefficient of volume compressibility for stress range 1000-1500 kN/m 2
iii. Compression index for the stress range 1000-1500 kN/m 2
iv. The expansion index during swelling
Question two
The current effective vertical stress, σ’v at a certain point in a saturated clay is 181 kPa. The soil
is to be covered with a 2.5 m thick fill that will have a unit weight of 19.3 kN/m 3. What will be
the value of σ’v at this point:
i. immediately after the fill is placed
ii. after the consolidation settlement is complete
iii. when 40% of the excess porewater pressure has dissipated

Question three
The compression curve shown in Figure 1 is typical of a compressible layer 5 m thick.
Determine the compression index Cc and the recompression index Cr. Assuming the initial void
ratio e0 =0.87 and the preconsolidation pressure, σ’p is 120 kPa. If the existing overburden
pressure is 50 kPa, compute the settlement due to additional stress of 150 kPa added by a
structure. (Ans. 0.297m)
